Originally posted this on the Jigglypuff boards to someone debating to drop jiggs for high tier, despite doing better with Jiggs than any high tier.

Look, play the character you can win the best with. I didn't pick DDD cause he's high tier. The fat man picked me. Believe me, in a competitive fighter, you can't pick your main, it just doesn't work that way.

Sit down with me, I'll tell you a story of how I learned this lesson.

I was pumped, I was finally getting my hands on Guilty Gear, the greatest fighting game of all time, I went and researched all the charecters, tiers, matchups, tactics, and decide before even touching the game that the right person for me was going to be May. She simply seemed to fun to play, before even touching her!

I get the game, I learn the basics, all with May, and I fit my first hurdle, I could not get the loop down, no matter how much I practice. All right I said, I'll try her bread and butter combos, again, they just did not feel right in my hands. Then I said it must be that I'm new to the game, I just need some experience using the character. About a months go by, I am not having fun except for when standing still and dolphin spamming (because both are so cute), and I am not winning or progressing with May at all. I start to choose random characters, looking for someone who fits my play style. Much to my surprise, my style was fit perfectly, my bread and butter combos done with ease, and my progress rapid when I began working with A.B.A. I could definitively tell this was the character for me.

Even Fiction himself messed around with the top tiers until he finally stumbled upon Wario for himself, he knew and understood the power of M2K, but failed to work with him properly. Mango came out of left field maining Jigglypuff. Taj knew the power and abused of Marth, till he got ***** by Gimpyfish, too which he found his only usable option: Mewtwo, of all people.

Case in short, you can not change or affect the person who works best for you. Its a natural thing you can't control.

Pick one of the best if you plan to place like one of the best. Saying you shouldn't consider tiers when picking a character for competitive play is crazy. Sure, pick who you like, but if you like a bottom tier ****ty character just a bit more than a top tier, just pick the top tier. >_<

Also, Brawl will never be as balanced GG. Ever. So yeah, tiers matter, A LOT.

Pretty interesting read, and it's true. I can't play a character I have nothing in common with and I'm not a fan of big chatacters like...Astaroth in Soul Calibur or whatever. I use Talim in every SC game because she's fast and nimble. Just like my playstyle in most games. And she's cute. :x

Oh hey look let's cherry pick single people doing better than most at that one character and ignore the reality that the majority of top placing players use top placing characters that **** the **** out of lower tiers.

Where was FOW at Genesis? I didn't see him in the top 8, you know what I saw in the top 8? A bunch of top tiers.

And whose to say that FOW would have been top 8 with a top tier? You ever seen Gimpyfishes Fox?
Its not very pretty.

Too bad Gimpy never really made money and constantly said Bowser was a bad character. Seriously, no one brings him up as an example as to why 'tiers dun exist' for the exact same reason loooool. He did ok, he did not win. The goal of competitive play is to you know, win, herp derp. But yes, let's continue ignoring my point and cherry pick for guys who do 'ok' but will still never share the spot light with the players using top tiers and winning.

I never said Tiers don't exist. That's putting words in my mouth.
I said that you can't control who you play clearly best with.
Someone's an angry little birdie.

And lol at you bringing up Genesis. Mango, Armada, and Hungrybox all maining high tiers wha?

I don't think the OP was focused entirely on tournaments and winning, but rather on ease of play with certain characters. Playing games competitively isn't always just about winning (or else everyone would main MK). I can win a lot more matches if I play as Snake, but I feel a lot more comfortable playing as Ike or Ganondorf. Sometimes I even beat people with Ike who I can't beat with Snake >_>

I was lucky and never went through the 'wrong character' dilemma with this game. I liked Ike from the day I bought the game and have mained him exclusively ever since, with ever-changing secondaries. When I'm playing Ike, I just feel completely in control of my character; like I know exactly what to do in any situation and I know exactly how every one of his movements works.

As a result, even when faced with match-ups that are hard for Ike, I don't feel intimidated. Even if I'm down two stocks and losing horribly, I still don't lose my nerve because I know Ike's character so well. If I was playing as MK, I would get all nervous against just about any other character because MK doesn't come naturally to me at all. His movements and fighting style just don't match mine and I make mistakes a lot.

You have to decide what's most important to you. If you just want to have fun, and winning isn't important to you, pick whoever the hell you want. If you want to win, pick a top tier character. Period. Yes, some people can do good with garbage characters, but you more than likely are NOT one of those people. Do yourself a favor and pick a great character. If a character doesn't work for you, it is probably because you refuse to practice as hard as you should.

In Brawl, if you want to have fun, pick a low tier. If you want to win, pick a top tier. There's no argument to be made here, it's common sense. I assumed that if you're having trouble deciding who to main there is some weight to the decision, if it's just for the lulz, who gives a ****? Be a man, play PT. =D

Or pick a mid tier and try to do both at once.
But end up sad in the end. :(

But not always. :)

I find it true that the character you do best with NEEDS to fit your playstyle, but depending on who that character ends up being WILL affect your overall tournement status. Someone maining Lucas will have a tougher chance of succeeding opposed to someone maining Diddy.

My main's been Kirby and I've 2nd Snake. But no matter what, I always have an easier time winning with Snake. It's reaching the point where I'm considering switching.

Low Tiers are for fun unless you **** with them. Ganon is my most played character, but I wouldn't dare use him in tourneys.

High Tiers win tournements. There's always exceptions, but those exceptions don't change the fact that High Tiers win tournements.

If you want to win, you ****ing have to pick a Top/High tier (S/A tier).
Period.

Unless you're really good (which you're probably not). No offense meant.

Try ALL the S and A tier characters.
Select the highest ranked one that you like a lot.
You can use that one as your main.

Then, look at your new Top/High tier character's bad matchups (disregard this if you discover you like playin Metaknight the most). Pick the character you like best that covers all his/her bad matchups. That will be your secondary.

And of course, you can still play low tiers for fun. But don't ever dream of taking them to a tourney and doing well.

Sorry for the cold truth. The truth hurts.

I agree with the OP completely. I have never chosen my main on tiers, I have always just stuck witht he character I feel I can flow better with. Yes it kinda sucks that they are low and mid( Wolf, Lucas, Ike), but none of the high tier (sept snake) feel good to use.

Wolf all the way!!!

It's better to just play the game rather than take the quiz.

A quiz I took says that I apparently would main Zelda and like it. Well Zelda's recovery is awkward and sucks. Don't like her playstyle.

Jigglypuff is the shiz to me. So is Ness and Falco.

is there some sort of quiz somewhere that you can take and it tells you what character best suits your playing style?
Lol the quizzes in the internet are usually fail and dont really help. I took one a loooong time ago and it said use shiek but guess what? I hated shiek.

Yessssss I agree with this blog. When Brawl came out I thought I wanted to main DDD. But I wasn't getting anywhere with him, and eventually after a week or so I found out that DK worked really well. He was fun, AND he won me games. :)
Since then I've won a few tourneys (in-state with 30-40 people), and placed 9th at a regional a while back (it had 90+ people) and 3rd at another regional (about 70+ people) and I think I'm still getting better.

A lot of people who say "you have to pick a top tier if you want to win tournaments" don't actually go to tournaments very often... <_<
(Looking at you, falcon. :p Lol you haven't even made a post on the regional boards since last year.)

And remember, the current tier list is not 100% accurate. I think DK is WAYYYYYY underrated on it. (just look at my sig...)
So don't feel limited to the ones who are currently at the top. Olimar used to be middle tier. Now he's high.

/shameless plug:
I made a quiz a while back.... The point is just to give vague ideas on who to try. Of course you still have to play the game....

Dk probably wont make it much higher than his is, since DDD is number 6 and he has an impossible matchup against him and Iceclimbers to an extent, so he probably wont make it past top 10 Im sorry to say just because of that.
