Time or Stock

Necrobump is necro

Let's contribute however. I personally dislike time because it is too campy. However, I think that time might actually be a GOOD idea (as in, put the timer to 8 minutes or 10 minutes and then just play until 5 stocks are up). This could be our solution to the camping problem in many tournament matches since there isn't a timer for stock matches or at least it doesn't work online.
!

Potential threats to this idea - Two players dying nearly at the same time could spark an argument. If no other witnesses are around.

Can't you check by looking at the floaty platforms that respawn you after you die? The person who died first will respawn first and therfore have the first platform that takes you directly above the highest platform on hyrule, whereas the player who died second will come down on a second floating platform to the immediate left of the first.

Or is is something like dying within x frames of eachother means player 1 still gets the first floating platform regardless if he died after the secoond player?

If I explanied poorly I can take a print screen.

If this is applied to every stage and we found out the exact positions of each, then it is possible that this is a true solution to the timed match business in tournament n64 matches.

At first I was like what's Gideon doing in this forum
Also you could just get like a watch or something, I think most cell phones nowadays have countdown timers or something of the sort and I think it's fairly safe to say that 1/2 smashers have cell phones ... right?

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
I don't like the idea of using a cell phone or watch, since... well, you can't see how much time is left without completely turning your head around (as in look away from the screen, if you can even see it).

I actually think time matches is a great idea. Just someone will have to keep track of the stocks (or have 5 pennies or something, and every time you lose a stock, take a penny away). But I do like this idea, and might use it at the next tourney I host.

Now then... if we were to do this... how much time would we put?

It is usually w/e stocks 8 minutes.
i know melee is 4 stocks 8 minutes
I know brawl is 3 stocks 8 minutes/10 minute
Brawl+ is 4 stocks 8 minutes
Brawl- is 5 stocks 8 minutes
and smash 64 is usually 5 stocks, so then 5 stocks in 8 minutes?

or 5 stocks in 20 minutes for samus dittos or Jiggs vs Samus

Stock, it's too easy to play Cat-'n-Mouse in Time mode, especially in a 4-way when someone slips out of the fight unnoticed to pick off kos from anyone knocked near them.

Set a bomb timer. That way, if it goes over 8 minutes we'll have 2 less campy players in the world.

Huh? Back when I used to play melee stock FFA in my dorm, my default strategy was to camp away from everyone else until it was 1v1.

That's what I meant when I said Cat 'n Mouse. (Probably could have written it differently)

One person usually just walks out of the fight during a time or stock match and picks off anyone that gets close to him (Winner is usually this "cat"), and in time mode. during a 1-on-1, once the timer starts running down the leader tends to try to keep away from the other person till the game ends. (Winner is the mouse)

With free-for-all 3 or 4 players it's almost always a game of keep-away if people are trying to win. In 1-on-1 this isn't so bad since there is more risk in camping when scores are close, since it would mean the outcome could easily change within the last minute. If the leader is ahead considerably though, it's still not so bad because if they could get such a lead, clearly they could win regardless. If only there was a stock-time option like in Melee--that'd be rad.

it's hard to say because matchups like jiggly and kirby are just naturally really long battles, or just jigglypuff in general lol!
with the same logic, Sonic dittos in the game you play should be 25 minutes in brawl :)

I haven't seen too many videos of games going over 8 minutes let alone 10 minutes. if the Jiggs wants to camp, let the Jiggs camp and lose.

I've played a good amount of 15 minute games(even in tournament).

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a way to use the game's built in timer and stock features. I think single player does this, so it might be possible in multiplayer.

Even if it is only possible in sigle player, using the newly-released FD-like codes in single player could allow 2-4 people to play any stage with any number of stocks and a timer. If the community wants it badly enough and is willing to use GS cheats, it can definitely happen without the aid of any external devices.

Or it could be set to time mode while the falls were kept track of by a "referee" so that when someone gets 3 falls, 5 falls, etc. the other person is declared the winner and the game itself is "no contest'd" if the match finishes before time is up, or we could just bring stopwatches to tournaments. lol

Main issue with this is due to many people who do 1v1's online use p2p or want the lag to be as reduced as possible.

I was referring to regular fights offline though. I don't know how p2p works since I've never used it.

I actually like to train against computers with time and not stock. Stock is fun to play computers when its social and your passing controllers. But with time training, its like an endless barrage of computers you have to deal with for "x" amount of time.

Against people though, stock is the way to go. More pressure, less times for someone to mess up, and when you see someone play, your breaking down their moves at your own risk.
