This thread has me interested in buying a new TV. I really want to upgrade from my old 27" Sony TV that uses RF connections. My problem with it is that the picture is always fuzzy looking, it's a ginormous space hog, and looks ugly with all silver/wood stuff going on.

I want help from people who know what they're talking about. I would just like some reccomendations (links, whatever) or something. So here's what I want in my future TV:

- The ability to play SSBM/SSBB with no lag
- Something around $200 - $550
- 27" to 32"
- Non-Widescreen (I don't like the smooshed look when playing older games)
- I would like it to be space saving. Flat-tube is fine with me, but the thinner the better.
- HDTV doesn't matter much to me... I don't have anything that uses it.
- Black plastic would be best, but totally optional.

Any help on this matter would be nice.

My reccomendation is anything thats not HDTV for smash. There are many great looking models to chose from and the best part is that you wont have to worry about any game that comes out for the Wii or Playstation 3.

Make sure to get one that has a flat screen not the screen that curves and your all set.Using the Av hookups on a standard TV will get rid of all the fuzz.

Definantly go with a 32 inch if you can.

Alot of new standard tvs have component inputs which makes both movies and smash look plenty better.

32" SDTV CRT with a 22" depth. Has composite, S-video, and component inputs. Downside is that it can't display in progressive scan.

This thread makes it sound like every one has a plasma/LCD Television :( (I don't have one)

I say this, when you buy your new TV, keep your old one. Ta-da, problem fixed.

That's not the problem. The problem is that the vast majority of HDTVs on the market today aren't equipped with quality scalers. And, of course, the quality of the internal scaler has to be tested yourself, because the manufacturer sure isn't going to tell you.

If you made the investment of buying an HDTV, you shouldn't have to pick and choose between it and your old SDTVs to play games that are meant to be enjoyed without video delay.

RyokoYaksa,

have you tested out any recent plasma/LCD HDTVs? I just bought the Samsung 42" HP-T4254 plasma hoping to get some good looking smash out of it... only to find out that it lags (even with game mode on, wii component cables, DNIe off, etc.). I don't want to resort to buying an xbox360 or a ps3 to enjoy videogaming on my brand new hdtv.

Any recommendations for hdtvs with unnoticeable lag? I know isai has a nice hdtv, but for some reason, i didn't notice any lag on it... i'm not sure what model it was, but he had component cables for the cube hooked up to some sort of panasonic... felt lag free... but that was when i wasn't too good.

I've got the Samsung 32inch LCD model number LN-S3251D and it plays games lag free. The important things you want to look for in a gaming TV are the pixel response time and the supported inputs. Be sure to look for a TV that has nothing greater than an 8ms response time. Anything more than 8ms and you'll start to see lag and other effects such as ghosting.

Getting too worried over lag in HDTV's is ridiculous. HD is the standard (or will be VERY soon) and HD is where it's at. Don't give up your chance to play Brawl in a higher resolution and to have it look it's BEST just because you're too afraid of getting a lagging TV. Do some research and you're games will look and play great. The famous adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind here. If you buy a no-name cheap HDTV, don't expect great performance. I paid a little extra for a high quality Samsung TV and all of my games look amazing. I play quick first person shooters on the 360 with no ghosting, and I play Smash Bros Melee lag free in progressive scan mode.

My yr model 2006 52 inch rear-projection HDTV owns lag 4 stock! No Lag at all from what I seen. I play Fox alot and drillshine, L-cancel, shffl, waveshine, shl, ect. with no lag problems at all. It looks sooo nice and plays so well, I love it. I also play Guitar Hero 2 and afew DDR games with no problem. I think only old or bad brandname HDTVs have that problem mainly.

Ah ok...you have two options that I know of.

1. Check out this article: http://gear.ign.com/articles/718/718587p1.html

It's a video scaling processor that increases the speed of image processing and completely eliminates lag. The only problem is the price: this thing costs about $1500.

2. Get a new HDTV that isn't laggy. IGN has a list of lag-free TV's. I found the link here on this thread:

http://gear.ign.com/articles/720/720303p2.html

Hope this helps.

The only "HDTV" I can trust to not lag in 480p and at the same time have excellent picture quality are the CRT rear-projection types. However, they take up a lot of space and can cost quite a bit as well.

And Sir James, Brawl is going to run at 480p60 just like Melee. You just can't trust most HDTVs (like the ones you see at gaming centers) to not lag, even in 480p, especially if they're fixed-pixel displays. It is something to be very worried about.

Smash Lag SOLVED!!!

problem TV: Samsung HP-T4254 Plasma TV lags significantly (i.e., not able to shffl correctly cuz of 'controller lag', as i would like to call it)

solution: return Samsung HP-T4254 to Best Buy!!! I kid. Well, I did return it, but that's not the solution. Anyways, I actually purchased the Panasonic 42PZ700u from Fry's for $1599. According to Frys.com, the TV plays EDTV (480p) well. So, I went over to my local Fry's with my Wii, component cables, and smash in hand, asked them to try it out... and VOILA... smash lag free!!! I also tried it on the Panasonic PX75U 42 in plasma TV and that works equally well.

notes: the 42PZ700u that I bought has a max resolution of 1080p, so I was actually surprised to find that it works. also, for those as sceptical as I was about others postings of lag-free tvs, there may be lag... but it does not affect my playing with falcon or fox.. or any characters for that matter.... the lag that is there is unnoticeable... and yes, i've noticed plenty of hdtvs that have lag... so my judgement is not 'newb'.

RyokoYaksa/AeramisWolfLord/whoever else doesn't believe in hdtv smash:
Definitely check this tv out... if you find problems with lag with this tv... then you are much much MUCH more attuned to your timing than I am.

Okay.... so, I guess RyokoYaksa is right... there is lag in all HDTVs.... however, the lag on my current TV (42PZ700U) is very minimal. The way I found out I had lag is that i now have a much longer wavedash with fox on my new hdtv... and i can't do the same on a regular crt tv. It may be just that my fingers work better at times than others... but yes... there is a lag... but it doesn't kill the game at all.

Just a question.

I'm trying to pick up a Sony Bravia 32" LCD HDTV for multiple game purposes. From what I have seen, it can run 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. I've heard alot of good things from these Tv's, and it can run frames at 120hz, which is pretty amazing. I don't have component cables (yet) to test the Tv, but I wanted to know if it would be a good investment.

Thanks in advance.

Some HDTV developers do tell you this, and thats why they make special gaming HDTV's like mine. It was made for games, so it was made to counter lag (don't ask me how). And it works i've never once had problems with TV lag, and I have all three systems and play a lot of games. So i'm not worried for Brawl.

So my tip to people if they plan on getting a HDTV, get a gaming one and at least get an LCD screen.

I got an HDTV and wii component cables with my christmas money. I play melee on it fairly consistantly, and haven't noticed any lag in this or any other wii game, with one exception: Link's crossbow training.

I'm not sure why this is, but backing away further than normal from the screen helps. Other games don't have the same problem, so I dunno why backing up helps but it does.

Care to tell me what TV you have exactly?

I would try to test TV's, but I don't have component Cables. They have them at my Local Gamestop and Best Buy.

Yes it would be very helpful if you could provide examples of HDTV's that work well.

If anyone doubts the damage lag can do to game play try an HDTV while playing guitar Hero 3.
It really makes it difficult to play the game which require especially on Expert mode.

Ok so I have a 50" Plasma 720p HDTV.

I hope and think I won't get any lag.. Most I am worrying about is the network latency lag..

Anyone else having trouble finding EDTVs? Seems like they've gone out of favor/ been replaced. At best they're just as expensive or more than most HDTVs. It's ridiculous.

Ugh, I just bought this little guy right here, and now I'm worried about having it play Smash all laggy and lame.

I haven't opened it yet, and I really know nothing about TV's. What do you guys think? Should this TV I just bought work decently? I'd try it out myself but if I find out it lags and return it, I have to pay a 15% restocking fee.

So, opinions :D? I seriously know nothing about TV's at all :) Any help would be appreciated.

Also, do I have to order the official component cables from Nintendo's store? Or does a place like Gamecrazy or Gamestop carry them? I hate placing orders online...

We need some more specific information to help you out.

Alos, they do have Wii component cables from Nintendo at Gamestop and Best Buy. They are 35.00 though.

How can it when the Wii only supports 480i and 480p resolutions?

If that were the case this wouldn't be an issue.
Oh, sorry, I went and found where I heard that again and it's 480p. Quoted from IGN: "Question: Will Super Smash Bros. Brawl support 16:9 widescreen and 480p progressive scan? The answer is yes on both counts."

Edit: In other news, I'm looking for a widescreen TV around 32", mainly because my TV sucks and I want something to watch anime and play Brawl on. I'll be watching this thread for suggestions and ideas!

I have an 2006 model 52' RCA Rear projection HDTV and I have over 500 games total on my 5 gaming systems I have hooked up atm. I have never had any lag at all on any game. I have played tons of games like ddr, guitar hero, arcade fighters, halo 1-3, other fps ect. and most importantly smash brothers melee and 64. I can drillshine, waveshine, shffl, chaingrab, sweetspot, super wavedash, ect. without any noticeable lag. I really love my TV. I would suggest to anyone looking to enjoy games while playing to the best they can to get what I got.

Almost all HDTV's are affected by screen lag. The most effective way I know of seeing this lag is to play Guitar Hero. If the notes don't match up with the music, your tv is lagging. Guitar Hero had a nice feature to adjust this lag, but I don't know if Brawl will. But, the Wii has been pretty good at keeping up with the HDTV screen so I don't think we should see any major problems and if you do lag at all it will most likely be through your internet connection when you play online.

I work with Televisions and know and realize this issue...it is/was disgusting for the gamecube in general....but

it obviously will not be a huge issue since there is a setting for WS presentation..The obviously realized that the public is now generally leaning toward HDTVS

This is a waste of time thread.

I have a Toshiba Regza 32" TV and it has some lag. Turing on Game Mode reduces this. My question is, for 720p TVs, will using a Component-to-VGA cable reduce the lag? It's quite small with Game Mode on but I'm not sure if it's good enough for SSBB.

I've played guitar hero 3 and the lag on HD Tvs is unbearable,.. it's only a few miliseconds, but it totally makes it a bad experience
