There better not be too many characters per franchise in SSBB.

Yeah, lets just over look characters like Wolf Link(with Midna), Blaziken, Lucario, and (Insert unique Mario character) just because those series had more characters in melee. . . .

You should just be happy with ALL characters having a unique and fun move-set and not care what series they come from. As long as they are fun and unique than way should it matter if half of them come from Mario/ Zelda and Pokemon? We know those 3 will get more characters for the simplie fact that they are the biggest sellers so just hope for ALL new comers to be fun and unique and not get all series divison like about it.

It's a slap in the face if they give a spot to somebody like Waluigi and blow off Little Mac. NOBODY ELSE would be offended by something like that? I love Waluigi, but c'mon... that's just stupid.

me too, I use waluigi in Mario Party, but PLEASE don't have him waste the spot for a more deserving charcter, which is almost everyone else !

No, they shouldn't overlook other series for minor characters in the more popular franchises. But if a franchise has a cool character(and this goes for those already represented and those who are not yet represented), they should get in.

For example:
Mario- Bowser Jr., Geno, Fawful
Dk- Diddy Kong, K.Rool
Metroid -Ridley
Kirby -King Dedede
Star Fox- Krystal, Wolf
Pokemon -None
F-Zero -Goroh, Black Shadow, Deathborne
Earthbound -Jeff, Mother 3 character

Any of these characters would be interesting and cool in Brawl.
After modifying it, I agree.

Yeah, lets just over look characters like Wolf Link(with Midna), Blaziken, Lucario,
I agree, we should do that.

I completely agree with parrothead on this one. I mean, this is supposed to be a game for Nintendo's all-stars. To accomplish that, there needs to be an even mix of characters from all across the Nintendoverse. I mean, some exceptions could be made for major franchises like Mario and Zelda, but not a lot. Look at it this way: Let's say that there are exactly 40 characters in Brawl. Would you be happy if there were 20 Mario characters? Or would you prefer a more diverse mix? Putting too much emphasis on one game would really just be wasting space that more deserving (and probably fun) characters could be occupying.

There will be because you people seem to wan them. Just read some of the character threads there are a multitude of characetrs from the same series that people want. Stupid people spread the glory of Brawl to other (whatever the plural odf series goes here).

Don't have really have a problem with Marshigo's additions(except that he should remember that Poke-hate is for 14-year-old wiggers), I just don't find Wolf or Jeff incredibly necessary(Cool? Sure, but not 'must-haves').

To Parrothead, regarding the title of this thread: Or what? You'll be angry? You'll say some mean things? So what if they put a lot of characters from one franchise in SSBB. The more the merrier. Suck it up.

Having this many characters per franchise is almost equal to JoshCube's SBO roster (excluding 3RD-Party characters and protagonists from other Nintendo titles).

I know you have a liking for the underdog characters, parrothead, but we can't have a roster dominated by them. Sakurai doesn't want a roster filled with only the popular, and I'm sure a roster dominated primarily by the obscure wouldn't be his (and our) cup of tea either. I understand he's primarily looking for uniqueness in characters, so it's just a matter of finding unique styles among the better-known and unique styles among the lesser-known and just making the two flow together.

The development team won't be going overboard- they'll hand-pick characters chosen by popular request, as well as those Sakurai might deem unique. He might just stick a few obscure characters in the roster as well, so don't fret.

I'm pretty sure Sakurai said only 40 will make the cut in Brawl. And most likely he's planning to cut a few from Melee.

If there is a next Smash game, chances are they'll want to ride off the success, but include a few more. Seeing as it went from 12 to 26 to 40. I say 54 is a good bet for the next one. With once again cuts. let's not forget popularity changes over time, it could be 4 years till the next Smash Bros, and Falco could not be cool anymore, or Mewtwo, Ice Clmibers or G&W could be kissed goodbye. A lot of people are saying Mario vs Sonic is outdated. by 2010 that could be the case. Mario might be outdated. Link and Samus are starting to gain some common ground.

Also I reckon there wont be that many Pokemon characters ever. A lot of Pokemon are better being in Pokeballs then they ever will be a prime character. Pokemon is a hit and miss franchise now. Most kids still are crazy for it, and I know Japanese still love it, but what about the rest of the world. These days though I see most kids trying to get their hands on a GTA or Halo game more then Pokemon.

Also i'm pretty sure there will only ever be 4 characters from the Zelda franchise.
Link, Young Link, Zelda and Gannondorf.
I reckon Midna and Wolf Link are no possibilities whatsoever. Nor is Tingle.

I don't see them choosing too many F-zero Characters. My favourite is actually James McCloud, but i'm sure i'll never see the light of day of him being in a Smash Bros. game. I'm pretty happy with Fox anyway. Whoever they choose for F-zero there's going to be a complaint, some people just prefer other players. For example I would rather have Black Shadow then Samurai Goroh and I hate Pico and Dr. Stewart.

I'm sure they'll go by requests anyway, but I doubt Sakurai will listen to any stupid ones, or ones that just wouldn't fit in. For example Wolf Link. Why bring in another Link, when you can just as easily make original Link turn into a Wolf.

Or just have no Wolf Link at all.

Sakurai never said 40 characters, though. That came from the 'big fraud' and people just adopted it because it seems logical.

I also wouldn't be jumping the gun on SSB4. We aren't even close to Brawl.

I'm personally not hoping for a fourth. I think making a number 4 would be stretching the series a little thin...

@ JPW: Um, yeah, Skull Kid, thanks.

The most unique styles...

Ridley: He's a DRAGON, with GUNS.
Krystal: Magic and Staff.
Diddy Kong: Jet pack, popguns, guitar.
Midna/Wolf: 4 legged gameplay
Deoxys: with form shifting as part of his A moves, he would be an uncanny character. He literally has no bones, so ANYTHING can bend the wrong way, anywhere.
Olimar: Pikmn summoning
Sami (Advance Wars): Unit Construction

Note that this is based off how they would play, not my personal favorites. *coughLucariocough*

Stretching my a**. I don't want to see the SSB series die. But I do agree that we shouldn't be thinking about SSB4 when we don't even have Brawl.

Oh sorry i misinterpreted the topic. I thought he was talking about the franchise of Smash bros itself.
Guess I should read better.

Also I know i'm probably gonna get bad rep for this, but I'm pretty sure I said this in another thread. I don't want Skull Kid(I believe he was actually called Stalkid anyway). He's not really that good of a character in Majora's Mask nor is he in Ocarina of Time. He did have some nice comedy but he bored me to death, and I was really annoyed I never actually got to verse him, and see what he could do in a battle. Skull Kid in my view isn't really a worthy addition, and chances are, he could of just been around the 64 era. I'm pretty sure if he was that important he would of made it in Melee.
I really don't think we'll see Skull Kid in anymore Zelda games. Though TP could be a possibility. But I don't get what so good about him? Is it just the way he looks?

Then again I have to respect your opinion. We all have different views. I'm blinded by anyone else who makes the cut. to be honest. All I want is Sonic thrown in, then they can add anyone they want. I'm got some unfinished business with Mario. Stealing Sonic's spotlight. lol.
just kidding.

Of course even if Sonic didn't make the cut, I would still get Brawl, but I would be disappointed. Especially if someone like Pacman or Bomberman took his place instead.

ON TOPIC:

Main protagonists are the most important ones for SSBB. Otherwise, characters that have been used the most OR are the most popular. Followed by the best sidekicks and partners of the protagonists. Then, characters that spawned a spin-off of a franchise (e.g. Wario -> Wario Land and WarioWare, Yoshi -> Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Cookie, etc.). Then the main villains of the protagonists, that have been used so many times, and are popular. And finally, side characters.

OFF TOPIC:

These advertisements in this entire forum are annoying.

I agree that we shouldn't go Mario and Zelda crazy on Brawl. We DEFINITELY shouldn't go Pokémon crazy either. It was in it's prime about eight years ago and is only fun once in a while for nostalgic purposes. However, obviously the more characters Sakurai decides to put in, whether it be 40, 45, 50, whatever, we can free up another spot or two for the larger franchises in Brawl. The larger the overall roster, more characters from the popular franchises can be thrown in, because we'll always being excluding a few characters. As long as we're not excluding some of the more original characters. If we put in Kamek and Wind Waker Link and exclude some more unique, or even just popular characters like Captain Olimar, Jill, or somebody new from the Earthbound series, then we have a problem. We shouldn't sacrifice the obscurity for the familiar.

WHERE IS BOWSER JR. HE IS UNIQUE WITH HIS PAINT BRUSH AND AT LEAST PUT HIM ON THE MARIO LIST. I do agree that they shouldn't add to much from one franchise.

Visiting from above.
Since this topic was bumped with exactly the same argument as before, allow me to use my exact argument from a couple of months ago.

McFox said:
Yeah, I think it's a really great idea to exclude awesome characters because of the franchise they appeared in. That's sounds like a good idea.

I'm not saying "let there be no popular characters in SSBB". I'm saying "save some room from some 'not-so-popular characters'."

I Disagree, that's Completly stupid, and i think we all know that Smash is a Popularity Contest.

This: "save some room from some 'not-so-popular characters'."

It's like saying, "hey we have 6 Mario Characters, let's Remove Luigi and add Pacman".

Yes, but that doesn't mean that pathetic Characters are more worthy of being in Brawl than Unpopular ones.

Sakurai would never cut Ridley, Dedede or Geno for... Alice? The Pokémon Trading Card Guy? That's nonsense. Underrated characters are not better that overrated ones (as you put it). They are just underrated, many of them with a lame background and design.

Of course, there are exceptions: Little Mac, Takamaru, Balloon Fighter or Sukapon for example.

I value "underrated" characters over popular and hyped characters. They bring more originality and variety to the overall game. If they just put popular main characters in SSB, then the game....would.........suck.

Im not put alot of unknown losers in game, but give unique underdogs (like Mr. G&W and Ice Climbers) a chance.

I actually do think picking from franchise lists is a good idea. Who wants 10 fire emblem charactars?(me but thats beside the point) Brawl still needs variety.

The problem isnt going to be 6 characters from 1 franchise *cough super mario in melee cough* The problem is going to be: Who are they going to drop to make room for "fresh" chractars from the same franchise. Im gona miss you roy and falco....

I agree with the sentiment that Brawl creators would be smart to avoid having too many characters from just a few franchises, and should instead try to add some fresh faces with new franchises backing them. I mean, certain franchises DO deserve more attention and representation (Mario, Zelda, pokemon, etc) due to their powerful effects on the gaming world, and on video game history since the 80's, and the franchise's sales figures and fanbases worldwide. All I really want in this regard is for Sakurai and the other developers to avoid filling up space with needless secondary characters (like dry bones or petey pirana or malon or happy mask salesman....) from big franchise names when we could have unique, awesome characters that may or may not be from lesser known games.

Sakurai said he doesn't JUST want popular characters alone in SSBB. Look at this list of characters by Algus (a.k.a. AlgusUnderDunk at YouTube and deviantART).
I was thinking of biting the guy's head off due to some of his choices (seriously, WTF?).

But he has Marina there, so all is forgiven. Mischief Makers FTW ^^.

Anyway, for the topic: yeah, I think I understand what you mean. I don't mind having a lot of chars from the same franchise, as long as they're original, but I am very much in favor of the "WTF?" factor of some obscure chsaracters (come on, when you people knew G&W was in Melee, I am sure there was more than one person scratching his head in surprise). So I'm hoping for some big surprises.

I think nothing concerning franchises should be a factor in a character's inclusion at all. All that matters is the character itself.

Pacman was a great game and everyone loved it. Same with Pong and Tetris. But include "characters" from these games and I might just boycott the game.

Characters from major franchises should only be included if they MAKE SENSE.
Pokemon: "Hmm. We need another Pokemon." "Let's take Blaziken. 10 year old Americans think he's awesome."
Zelda: "Alas, we have all recurring characters in. Except Tingle. Slave! I demand Tingle in this game!" "Yes, master."
...and so on. Just no.

And characters from lesser known games must only get in if they are any good.
I think Sakurai as actually interested in adding his creation Lolo. Lolo is basically a round thing. He also possesses hands and feet. Oh, and big eyes. Yes, that's it.
He also likes Muddy Mole, who is a mole that does mole things. His outstanding features are that he has a family or something.

Add characters that actually ADD PERSONALITY to the game.
No "dat caractar so cool" and no "lol middle-aged crazy man in tights".

Thank you.
