I thought we might have needed a thread like this for smashers in their last year of school who want to share their VCE/HSC experiences. Also if the vets can post here with information, tips, strategies etc it would be much appreciated.

Feel free to post up what subjects you're undertaking, your expected scores, areas you need help in etc.

Our school has it compulsory - Catholic school. I'd enjoy it but all we study is the desert dogma. Although sometimes I have good discussions with the teacher.

Study hard folks, study harder than you ever have and never have any fun.

Then you can get a high UAI and think you're too good for uni and wake to the shocking reality that you're no better than anyone else and you are a nobody.

-I would say that getting a high UAI/TER is good, but don't think it is representative of how uni will follow
-Just get a good enough score to do what you really enjoy, or what you can motivate yourself through or else you'll lack interest in uni and will find doing decently a lot harder
-I've seen a guy with a score around 80ish get 95% for his med exam, and another guy who get a TER of mid 99s just scrap a pass, so while these are extravagant examples, you just have to keep an open mind about uni and not think school is reflective of it
Anyway yeah, I did in 2006 in Melb

Music (34-->36)
Methods (44-->47)
Spec (36-->47)
English (43)
Chem (38-->42)
Physics (38 -->41)

-I got a 98.3, was aiming for 99+, but my mistake was not doing really well for my top 4 subjects as I screwed up chem with a raw of 38 --> 42 and I needed a better eng score than 43 [and I choose something as subjective as music =( ]
-But yeah, I think for the 99 you should aim for an average of 47 or so mininum after scaling for atleast 4 subjects (in the vce system)

-So yeah, study hard you can still enjoy yourself, and get into a course you feel happy about or I think you'll lose interest which has happened to a crapload of my friends even though they got the 99
-Post year-12 once you are in the course you want, yr12 scores don't really mean much unless you want to transfer/reapply and are not always reflective of how uni will go

Methods (32-->38)
Spec (26 ROFOOLFOLOFOLL--> 37)
English (45-->45) Me speak Engrish? That's unpossible yey I beat Chris in something)
Bio (36-->37)
Physics (30 -->33)
CISCO CCNA (Biggest VET waste of my life, spent it playing UT with Sam, calcs the top 4 Subjects and adds an extra 10% of that as a 5/6th subject)

93

By asian standards this makes me a ******, but I still got to go to all the good Universities and Colleges so w/e lol

Although I'm studying a lot, I still play a ton of Smash. I also began working out. It's not like I have anything better to do anyways.

I did my first Methods Exam 2 trial and I got 72/80 considering I did it in 80 minutes plus no reading time instead of 120 minutes plus reading time. I lost most of my marks from probability.
"What is the probability that you will get this question wrong given that you got the past two questions wrong?"
Dam probability. Who cares if you have a 0.000533535 chance of winning?!

Cao give some tips for engrish plz

I think of VCE as a sort of tournament, like Smash. When you go to a tourny, you don't go there to try to get 10th place, you aim to get first. Even if you don't get first, you know you've done your best.

Imo you'd probably be better off winning Rocky then studying for exams. That money is actually useful in the real world lol.

you kiddies need to remember that as hard as you work to get into a course, thats how hard you'll be expected to work in first year of uni.
second year will be harder
third year will be exponentionally harder
fourth year will **** your face off.

end of the HSC isnt the end of hard work, its the beginning of actual learning

Tipz is to scoring 45 in Engrish.

Prewrite your essays on every possible issue in your selected novels months before the 3 hour head**** exam, memorize it and reproduce it. Chances are if you've explored the text in enough detail, nothing is gonna throw you off and you already have a good memorised template of words in your mind to work off.

I studied texts on GATTACA/Oedipus Rex/Girl with a Pearl, but you've prolly got different ones now.

Yeah VCE is gay LOLZ

I pretty much only focused on English cus for some reason my teacher thought I could get 50 cus of my straight A+ SACs, but nooooo, there's too many smart people so I got put in my place

I suck at Maths, below average, woot

You've been going to school for 12 years. You might as well make the most of it by finishing your last year with a good score. You will miss the school atmosphere because you have been in it your whole life. Enjoy it while you can.
What methods book do you use btw?
Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Oh, you meant it.

Final UAI: 99.20

Math 3U - 96
Math 4U - 94
Physics - 96 (topped my school yipee)
Biology - 91
Engrish Advanced - 89

ZOMG failed to get that Premier's award by one mark in english *sigh*

For those in Year 12 right now. Study your *** off. Get a grade that will give you the widest range of opportunities you can. Then think real hard about what you want to do. Talk to those in the industry, talk to the students that study the course, talk to everyone everywhere you can about your career.

The BIGGEST difference between studying in Year 12 and Uni is motivation. In high school you are studying to open doors for yourself. In Uni you are studying because you are actually interested in the material and you love what you're doing. I can tell you that even with my high UAI, I lack almost any motivation to study Optometry because I flat-out find it insanely dull. What will determine your future is your passion for your subject, not the brains behind it.

The course material in high school is child's play, no doubt about it. I took a course in Maths and we breezed through Complex Numbers in two weeks. High school gave me two months to learn that. So don't think that this year is the end of your learning, because you have so many more years ahead of you.

PS: try not to play Smash too much.

lol unreon you ripped it up, too bad you missed out on Premier's Award.. out of curiosity why'd you choose Optometry?

I'm lucky I'm still in Yr 11, but need to figure out whether to do 4u math next year and which science to drop...

This.

One of the most important things about High school is that it conditions you for Uni. What you learn in highschool is extremely relevant, however, I also believe that by learning to work hard in High School, it will make University life easier because you will be used to working hard.

The best thing about working hard in Highschool are the study habits it promotes.

I remember back to Maths B, and our Head of Department for Maths used to tell us that if you could get A's without trying, and you didn't attempt to study because you knew this, you would get screwed over in the later years of High School because you wouldn't have the regular study habits needed to obtain a passing grade, let alone a good grade.

And this is entirely true, because I saw it for myself.

This mindset also applies to studying at large, so don't write it off, and don't let people try to tell you otherwise.

That being said, some University courses are much more demanding than others. I can hardly fault somebody like Amaterasu studying so hard considering the course he's doing at the moment.

People were getting irritated with me because I was applying myself as much as I could to my Uni work. Which really annoys me because I could hardly believe that was a reason to get annoyed with someone.

What I'm trying to say is, learn to work hard in high school to make your transition into Uni easy on yourself, and don't let anyone try to tell you that working hard in high school is a waste because it's not.

EDIT:

That being said, it's not a strategy for everyone, and I'm not trying to say that those who didn't apply themselves should have. It all depends on where you think you are gonna go. Somebody heading into Medicine will have to work much harder than most other disciplines for example.

I know people on the other hand that are heading into trades and very healthy incomes despite lacklustre performances in school. But again, the issue is motivation.

That's exactly what I had in mind. I began doing that today. My aim for English is 45+ so where do you think you most likely lost marks?

Which company? lol . I'm assuming you're using Cambridge Essentials seeing that you have Checkpoints. Yeah I have checkpoints as well. It put me to sleep.

I never used to study until this year where I picked up studying habits instantly. What Vyse said didn't apply to me I guess lol
