For those in Year 12 right now. Study your *** off. Get a grade that will give you the widest range of opportunities you can. Then think real hard about what you want to do. Talk to those in the industry, talk to the students that study the course, talk to everyone everywhere you can about your career.
The BIGGEST difference between studying in Year 12 and Uni is motivation. In high school you are studying to open doors for yourself. In Uni you are studying because you are actually interested in the material and you love what you're doing. I can tell you that even with my high UAI, I lack almost any motivation to study Optometry because I flat-out find it insanely dull. What will determine your future is your passion for your subject, not the brains behind it.
The course material in high school is child's play, no doubt about it. I took a course in Maths and we breezed through Complex Numbers in two weeks. High school gave me two months to learn that. So don't think that this year is the end of your learning, because you have so many more years ahead of you.
PS: try not to play Smash too much.
This.
One of the most important things about High school is that it conditions you for Uni. What you learn in highschool is extremely relevant, however, I also believe that by learning to work hard in High School, it will make University life easier because you will be used to working hard.
The best thing about working hard in Highschool are the study habits it promotes.
I remember back to Maths B, and our Head of Department for Maths used to tell us that if you could get A's without trying, and you didn't attempt to study because you knew this, you would get screwed over in the later years of High School because you wouldn't have the regular study habits needed to obtain a passing grade, let alone a good grade.
And this is entirely true, because I saw it for myself.
This mindset also applies to studying at large, so don't write it off, and don't let people try to tell you otherwise.
That being said, some University courses are much more demanding than others. I can hardly fault somebody like Amaterasu studying so hard considering the course he's doing at the moment.
People were getting irritated with me because I was applying myself as much as I could to my Uni work. Which really annoys me because I could hardly believe that was a reason to get annoyed with someone.
What I'm trying to say is, learn to work hard in high school to make your transition into Uni easy on yourself, and don't let anyone try to tell you that working hard in high school is a waste because it's not.
EDIT:
That being said, it's not a strategy for everyone, and I'm not trying to say that those who didn't apply themselves should have. It all depends on where you think you are gonna go. Somebody heading into Medicine will have to work much harder than most other disciplines for example.
I know people on the other hand that are heading into trades and very healthy incomes despite lacklustre performances in school. But again, the issue is motivation.
