There's a LAN center on the CNU campus called Arcadia that wanted to host a brawl tourney... no set date but the # is 757 310 6274. Maybe if people call with interest something will happen. I was gonna try to host something there, but I didn't because of school and now I just don't want to.
That from back then is the only other thing I remember of.

We should talk more.

2 things from me.

The first was I wouldn't have been able to go to the tourney anyways because I'm doing a paper, but still, no notice. <_<

Second is I'm out of classes on Fri, so now I'll be free, to sit around and do nothing. Hopefully we can get something worked out around here, its so boring. -.-

When I come back i'll gladly play until I can no longer make top 3 or if certain people show up :). I went to a tourney this weekend and came 7th of 39 and Kadaj came 3rd.

Until then pull together and let me know whats happening too... I know a few people who may be interested but don't post.

oh and heres the real results

1: OMGH4X ($77.00)
2: DubAllDee ($22.00)
3: PNPC ($11.00)
4: Ghad
5: GFOXX

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?p...all&subj=127329240633160&aid=-1&id=1564050042

duballdee and ghad are really interested in the crew, sk used to play with them when he lived here. we need to find a place to have some fests. im homeless right now, so if anyone can open their home for some, itd be much appreciated.

ok double postin cuz its my thread lol

BUT HEY GOOD NEWS!!!

i sent a long *** message to one of the owners of hi score about hosting biweeklys and shes very interested. heres what she wrote me back

"It sounds like a great idea! I'd love to get together and talk about the logistics. My name is Susan and my business partner Linda is out of town until Thursday but maybe we can set up a time that the three of us can come up with a game plan?"

so we can pretty much pull this off! all we gotta do now is step up the attendance. this is exactly what weve been looking for! lets not **** this up! SoVA baby!

Yeah last time I went there it was like 3-2 years ago. Where I nearly upset kadaj on lylat. They do have new owners if i remembered correctly the original ones were a male and a young lady. But, It's good we are starting this whole thing again. I'll be glad to be taking your guys money from these events ;)

i would be. also my friend found a venue. they(store) want to have biweeklies and want an estimated head count of the first tourney. if things go smoothly the first them then biweeklies will be definite. hit me up if anyone is interested. he's looking to have a minimum of 15. if this happens then biweeklies. =]. i just started playing again. oh and it can only happen on sundays. bleh.

Susan and Linda were the owners that I worked with 2 years ago.

Hopefully they've learned a good deal from the 6 months I ran tourneys there...because they sure as hell didn't know anything when we first got there (no legit ruleset, didn't even have all chars/stages unlocked).

A couple quick notes:
- It's expensive. They generally ask for $10 venue fees. I once talked them down to $8, but only out of consideration for the fact that we didn't start until the afternoon (because they had a birthday party that morning...which is much higher priority, btw)
- They only have a handful of CRT/SDTVs last time I checked.
- I ran everything without their help (Registration/Brackets), though other SoVa people have stepped up to help [*pound* @ D0N / Slash / others]

On the note of it being expensive, I strongly suggest that these NOT be biweeklies!

We have been trying for YEARS to hold biweeklies in SoVa and they NEVER hold up. Unless there's been a surge of new and interested players in SoVa, then I predict that it will not work well.

Think about it:
If venue fee is $10...what are you gonna do...charge $10 for entry to a biweekly? $20 for a biweekly Smash tourney when it most likely won't exceed 20 people often?

Okay so let's say you make entry $5...but wait, you're paying more for venue than you are for the tourney?

Mad whack, either way.

I've experimented with this so much and trust me it's just not worth it. (Smashers are poor when it comes to spending money on Smash =/)

Sadly, biweeklies at venues that aren't commercial establishments are also hard to maintain in SoVa. Why? Because they generally require 2 things that SoVa, unfortunately, lacks:
- a dedicated venue with sufficient space available every two weeks
- a dedicated TO with access to said venue who will be able to run these tourneys every two weeks

That being said, I'll bring back my suggestion from back in the day:

If you guys want tourneys every two weeks, do it like this:

@Smaller/non-commercial venue (Read: someone's house or a college conference room or SOMETHING that doesn't come with an inherent cost)

$2 venue fee
$3 entry fee
(seriously guys...one of the best things about SoVa's early days was these small/fun tournaments that put pressure but not so much that losing discourages you from returning simply because it costs so much "just to lose"...that's how the scene grew in the first place! Small/cheap tourneys...fests with side-events for a dollar...competition and rivalry exploded from there...but then quickly dissipated when we became too ambitious too quickly [by raising entry/venue fees]. We can't be delusional; we're not a good enough region to warrant $20 every two weeks to compete against each other...or to inspire others to travel here to compete against us.)

Two weeks later: call it the "Monthly" @ Hi-Score
$10 venue
$10 entry
That way, it's a separate/special event that has more weight to its results and can generate more hype.

Two weeks later: low-cost tourney again.

etc.

The other benefit to this is we only have to guarantee that non-commercial venue once every 4 weeks.

Pretty sure that design could encourage higher attendance and more competition in SoVa.

Thoughts?

ya i feel ya toasty, the venue fee was $5 at the last one i went to. the southeast smash guys talked them down to it. 5 isnt too bad though. we were also able to bring in our own tv, something ive had trouble with in the past with places like game on

lemme know what you can do mashi, i know we can get at least 15 for sure

also, that tourney i went to had 22 entrants with only 2 posters at it, which is pretty good as far as new kids.

and i like the monthly idea

good ****...oh you mean it was just a night-time tourney? ahh yeah then $5 would be what they'd normally charge...but I used to ask to book for the whole day since you know how Smash can get >_>

But hey if you can work out better details than what I suggested, go for it.

Honestly though I really encourage you to try that low-cost tournament...for the betterment of the region, anyway...and because it's just more fun with enough stress/pressure to keep the competitive spirit.

First post, whoo!

My brother dominated a singles Halo tournament there a couple years back, and since then Susan has been talking to him trying to get him to run tournaments there for them. He finally agreed to do the Smash tournament for them, and it was really our first tournament we've ever done. Thankfully a couple of SouthEast Smash guys helped run things, so it went pretty smoothly. He also did it for free.

toasty pretty much hit everything on the head with Hi Score. We're coordinating a tournament with them for July 17th right now for the whole day. We're looking at a $10 venue fee for the whole day for each person. Other than that, the biggest hurdle is setups. The Wiis they have should have all the characters and stages unlocked now, though we ran into one system where Wolf was unlocked during the tournament. We tested out their TVs the night before, and they are all off-brand LCDs that lag like crazy. Me and my bro have a total of 3 tube TVs that we will be bringing, and we're keeping a lookout on Craigslist for some free tubes people give away. Slash and H4X were awesome in bringing their own setups at that last tournament. We want to run Melee at this next tournament, but I'm not sure how we will be able to secure the discs and memory cards. Using MLG ruleset for Brawl, and MBR ruleset for Melee if it happens.

Slash - Dean has my old TVs at his apartment at ODU since I couldn't bring them with me to Georgia.

One of them, "The Lil B*tch*ss TV," is not suitable for tournament play as it will randomly glitch every now and then...but it's fine for a friendlies setup :) There should be 3 other functional ones, though I warn you that two of them are a biiiit smaller than the other two I used to bring around ["Master Chief" still works fine, iirc, and should be as crusty and green as always...yum ^_^]

NOTE: when I left last year, I told Dean he could keep them or sell them, if he pleased. I have a feeling he hasn't sold them yet since he hadn't by the last time we talked months ago, BUT that obviously doesn't eliminate the possibility.

So if you wanna buy em from Dean, then do that...if you wanna borrow him then just ask...

yoo ray! im guessing right??

anyways, ya toasty, i was thinking about doing night time tourneys. possible even alternating them, singles one week, doubles the next. they want to meet with me tomorrow, ill see if i could start that low, but i for one wouldnt mind the whole $5/$5 deal. its not super expensive, i just dont see them going for fees that cheap seeing they ask 10 for the whole day. ill prolly just want to have one scheduled to see how it all goes, and book more week by week if it all works out. hopefully ill get the info from mashi soon about his possible bi weekly spot

yo hax. so far the information is sundays only. biweeklys is all good if 15 minimum show up to the first tourney (impression on owner). $8 for singles and $8 doubles (each player). alternating weeks for one week singles, and the other is doubles. $3 from that $8 goes to the store and the $5 from each person goes into our own pot. the times would be from 12pm-10pm and again sundays only. the last thing i'm working on right now is how many setups we can bring. so far they have 4 hd's and 2 standards. after that then we'll be set the date but of course we needa set a good first impression!!!

Hax and I still need to go meet with them.

Is it strange that I strongly dislike the "take turns striking neutral stages" rule, and very much prefer the random select, CP, CP method?
If its the fact the wii's don't have all stages unlocked H4x and I both have SD cards that unlock EVERYTHING in an instant; Perfect for non-tourney ready wii's.
