Day 9: Cyndaquil
As you may know, I have just never been a fan of the Cyndaquil line. I dunno what it is - I have just NEVER managed to connect with it. Part of the reasons may be how the line straight up copies the Charmander line's stats point-for-point, without nearly having the same charm as Charizard does. And Typhosion's design just doesn't click with me much either, especially compared to the other two Johto starters (a beautiful, majestic sauropod with a fabulous flower wreath, and an epic alligator). Like they kinda just took a badger, changed the colors and put fire on it. It's obviously not that simple, but that's how it kinda feels to me.
BUT
There are two huge exceptions to this. Number one, I really like Hisuian Typhlosion - it expands on the simplistic design of the original really, really well, with a fancy new concept, a cool typing, and overall chill vibes compared to the more aggressive-looking original. And number two...I absolutely LOVE using the thing in Mystery Dungeon.
Why is this? Well, it's dependent on game. In earlier games, Smokescreen is an absolute monster of a status move that makes numerous bosses into jokes. And in later games, DX especially, the Defense Curl-Rollout linked combo synergizes beautifully. Like, in DX, if you level up your Cyndaquil to get Rollout, link it with Defense Curl, then get the Rapid Bulls-Eyes Rare Quality, you've basically won the game.
9 times out of 10 if I'm using a Cyndaquil in any form, it's probably Mystery Dungeon. In fact, Cyndaquil was my Skitty's trusty partner in the Explorers games, as part of the legendary Team Can't See. And if EOS DX becomes reality, you can bet on the team combo I'd go for.
