This is why ripping open wormholes is where it's at.

Don't worry about accidentally splitting an atom or creating a black hole that devours the entire world, the technology's totally safe.

Just remember who to call if you happen to open a portal to the wrong place.

I feel like ship of Theseus and not believing in the concept of a soul helps me be ok with this kind of tech.
Tbf as Zephyr said, this isn't a ship of Theseus thing. I get the whole transhumanism angle though, I remember having an argument with a friend about this who started the topic "But you would lose your humanity!" "Humanity is relative and whatever I chose it to be" got flung around back then after our Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex viewing lol

Something that bothers me about Star Trek teleporters (and perhaps it shouldn't, since they're entirely hypothetical) - is the fact that there's no way that the technology could create a perfect replica every single time. Human bodies are just too complex. No matter how refined the technology becomes there would be little mutations and changes every time we stepped through one. It's similar to how little mutations often occur as DNA replicates itself, as DNA is just so complex that it's hard for the process to be done perfectly.

I suppose since these little mutations happen in nature all the time it doesn't have to be so bad. But like, I have to feel like Star Trek teleporters would have to increase your risk of getting like cancer or something at least a little bit.

Although lord help us all if a fly sneaks into the teleporter with you
Isn't the whole point of the ship of Theseus the ambiguity of whether you still have the same ship at the end?
I suppose the ambiguity makes it really subjective. Some people probably feel like it's still the same ship in the end - others might not.

I think it is the same ship.

Also The Star Trek teleporters are literally converting matter into energy and then back. It’s not a clone or a photocopy.

Tangentially related to previous conversation, while I think exploring the idea is fun, immortality itself is overrated, imagine living through countless others lifespans, never being able to form lasting relationships with those who won’t live as long and having to witness so many things rise up and fall and having to relearn how the world works every so often. Seems like it would drive beings like us mad.

Screw it. I couldn't wait until next year (Next month). Had to change my avatar to the epicness that's the akhlut, my favorite mythological creature. :D

I’m still very afraid of death. The idea of not existing anymore mortifies me.

Fun Fact: Despite his extreme cheapness, Mr. Krabs pays his employees enough to pay off bills for rather expansive houses. His employees work fast food, and make minimum wage (if even).

This is to remind children that Spongebob is not real.
Double reminder that Spongebob has a bank account balance of 0 dollars and 0 cents.

That’s the thing though, everyone and everything will come to an end, even data and machines, and that’s not gonna change within our lifetimes. Being afraid of death keeps you from fully enjoying life and the sooner you can accept your mortality, I think you’ll find yourself in a better mindset. You gotta make the most of the time you have on this earth, and even after you’re gone, you’ll still exist as long as there’s others to carry on your memory.
