If I had to re-do it/make my own typing system for a Pokémon like game. I would do a three tiered system. Each Pokémon has at least two types, but have the ability to have three. The first two would be their elemental class. The type of magical elemental energy they channel. Water, Earth, Fire, Air, Ice, Lightning, and I guess Psychic and maybe Magic. Then the third one would be the kind of animal they are. Cat, Lizard, Bird, bear, etc. This is where we would find grass/plant, bug, dragon, and fairy. Fighting and Dark would not be types.

That's the thing - Pokemon aren't elementals. Types are supposed to vaguely describe their their general abilities or fight styles, not what "elements" they "channel".

The chart is a bit scattered, and not amazingly balanced. But I don't think having non-elemental types like dragon, ghost or fighting is really a problem.

Not really, lore wise she’s a human who picked up a mysterious book that altered her appearance and gave her the power to summon and control tentacles

I mean. Gen 1 is the generation with the most iconic Pokémon. And this is coming from the girl who, if she had played it as kid, her first Pokémon would have been black and white. And who’s actual first ever Pokémon game was SwSh. Gengar would be rad. Meowth would be rad. Giovanni with his team style would be rad.

So would Scizor. Or Sceptile. Or Zoroark. Or Urshifu.
