Yep Ridley should only be with his own kind (though I'm pretty sure his own kind is all but extinct). Maybe in a future Metroid game we'll be introduced to Mrs. Ridley (Mrs. Pacman style).

It seems the further up the character is the more the shadow is distorted, just compare Mega Man and Pikachu's shadows, grounded characters' shadows are much more stable. Depending on how high up Ridley is in the air he might be even smaller than predicted.
That's a rather good picture for this sort of thing, actually.
