Fighters: Mario, Bowser, Link, Samus, Pit, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Villager, Tom Nook, Inkling, Off the Hook

Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, Villager, and Inkling are probably the most obvious choices to show in this lineup. Bowser provides us an antagonist. While Donkey Kong, Marth, Olimar, and Shulk would also be reasonable choices here, I like the idea of having two SSB centric fighters revealed in this scenario (Fox and Pit) given that they are usually revealed really early in a game’s development cycle. Tom and Off the Hook help build up Animal Crossing and Splatoon, two franchises that have grown in popularity with the Switch era.

Given the nature of these fighters, should we count Pokemon Trainer, Aegis, and Mii Fighters as one slot or multiple slots?

Not sure if I'll remain active with this the whole time, but I'll play along for a bit.

This looks pretty similar to early roster builds I've done in the past - we can only be so flexible in these early stages I suppose. Essentially I want most of the core series laid out here, most of these are still quite active and representative of the greater Nintendo brand. Tom Nook is an evergreen face and Edelgard is the most popular character from a successful Switch game... which yeah, already got content in Ultimate, but with notable legacy exceptions I'm going to try not to be strapped to these prior decisions too hard. That's also why Isabelle is the top priority here, although I don't suspect I'll cut Villager altogether.

Notable omissions here are Fox and Marth. I considered it but since Fire Emblem is pretty flexible, and Star Fox has been taking its time, I'm giving them a rest for a round or two. Peach is here as a second Mario character to improve the gender balance, something I feel has been more important to Nintendo lately.

These feel like different scenarios to me. I tend to lean toward Pyra and Mythra qualifying as a single unit since they don't really have any precedent for being separate, nor do I think they really work that way. Pokemon Trainer I could go either way on - but Charizard has been a separate fighter in the past so theoretically they could be added separately right? The Mii Fighters literally are just three entirely seperate fighters so that seems pretty clear cut.

Luigi and Bowser fill out the obvious Mario quartet, and Zelda compliments Link. Marth rounds out our early Fire Emblem representation, giving the series its lead representative. I decided to add Ridley and Pyra / Mythra to continue to bring in Ultimate newcomers, and assure fans that some of their favorites from that game are not in danger. And Fox contributes a longtime favorite and legacy franchise, just nearly rounding out our Original 8.

With the addition of Xenoblade, I think we've nearly covered all the major "active" series from the Switch era. Give or take Yoshi and WarioWare, I guess?
