This round is certainly me moving out of characters I think will happen, and more of characters I want, to spice it up.

Lucario helps round out Pokémon for now, with it at five characters. Diddy Kong is also finally here, to give DK his deserved sidekick.

Then newcomers. Paper Mario is a pick I really vibe with, and it feels like the time is right for him, with a variety of games to pull from.

I’ve very much indulged and ceded a spot to Pneuma, to bolster Pythra. I figured a character I would love to get in properly might make my roster seem less… basic, for a lack of a better word. Plus, I think it’s only fair I compromise here with people adding Pythra as two rather than one.

Shadow helps give another third party another character, and is also just a popular pick.

New: Diddy Kong, Palutena, Incineroar, Knuckles, Ryu

Okay, so Diddy Kong finally gets added. Outside of him there’s one or two other characters I feel like I need to add 100%, but didn’t feel like it was the right time. Outside of the handful that don’t fit this prompt. Ike should be here (and Marth, eventually) but I wanted to focus on other series before giving FE a fourth.

Palutena and Incineroar are indulgent picks that add valuable archetypes to the roster as well. Palutena as a staff user, Incineroar a pure grappler. They may be less crucially significant characters but I do think they add a lot. Will go against the fold a bit to defend Incin as a Pokemon mainstay.

Knuckles and Ryu round out a couple of the most prominent third parties. Ryu and Chun-Li almost always crossover together, and I didn’t intend to let this be an exception. And Knuckles marks another newcomer. After some deliberation I’m opting for my favorite Sonic character. I literally almost added Tails, but truth be told I wanted to be a little different and I think Knuckles is mechanically fascinating and contrasts Sonic well. His style is more committal but his moveset options are not without their own strength, with gliding, burrowing and wall-climbing. Maybe Tails will join them later? Dunno yet.

Mr. G&W is a Smash staple and one of my favorite additions in the series. Not much to say there, he's great.

I'm double dipping on Capcom with Mega Man and Jill. This may be a little controversial, since Capcom has been dealt a pretty favorable hand here compared to some others, but I'm trying to judge these series on an individual basis and Capcom simply has way too many great choices. Mega Man rounds out the bare essentials of Smash third parties IMO and Jill adds perhaps one of the most prolific series without a character on the roster, Resident Evil. She would fight in a similar manner to MVC2, and have a retooled resource management mechanic. She emphasizes my philosophy of bringing in more diverse game genres by tackling Horror. I like to prioritize first party more, this is actually a bit more third party than I thought I'd be comfortable with at this stage, but I think they're all good additions and I'm quite happy with how my Nintendo side is shaping up.

I have most of the essential characters at this point barring Marth, but I have Lucina in his place effectively, so I’m focusing on building up some franchises here and adding a favorite or two. For Mario, Rosalina‘s gimmick is cool. Sheik is just a matter of favoritism. Bandana Waddle Dee and Greninja are popular characters in their respective franchises. For my last fighter, I decided to add Simon to introduce Konami into my roster.

A few of these choices were hard. I feel like both Mario and Fire Emblem has reached their max for now, alongside Xenoblade. It’s why I went for Ike and Bowser Jr. to round out these two series.

Zelda was looking helplessly small with only three characters, so I figured the best thing to do was to give it another character. Impa was the choice I went with, but I maintain that Zelda as a series is hard to have newcomers for.

Min Min gives a more modern series some representation, but clearly hasn’t reached the point a series like Splatoon has.

Mega Man is here to round out Smash 4’s third parties, and he felt like an omission I had to fill in.

At this point, I have the fundamentals done. I’m going to have to try and get creative and bold with newcomers soon, since I feel like that’s where I’m lacking.

54 characters now. I suspect we’re reaching the end of this game sooner rather than later.
