This is a weird and tough round.

Thankfully, Charizard has made it in, boosting Pokémon up to four characters. I’ve also decided against bringing back Pokémon Trainer. I think Charizard has enough to stand on his own, with Mega Evolutions making a comeback.

Little Mac is a retro pick I think should be here. I just think he’s neat. There were two other picks for green that didn’t make it in: Bowser Jr, and Pneuma.

Jr. didn’t make it in because I didn’t want to overrepresent the Mario series too quickly. I’d still like to bring him in, but he’s gotta sit this round out.

I actually considered making Pneuma a full character, as the third part of Pythra, and that some people included Pythra as two picks rather than one, so perhaps I could have compensated.

But I decided against it because Mac exists, and it would have done too much for Xenoblade before I have a chance for XB3 characters. She’s remaining as Pythra’s new Final Smash, unless there’s a dedicated round for clones.

Rayman has come full circle. It would be poetic after the Smash 4 leak that he would finally get in. Nintendo and Ubisoft have been on good terms lately, and I think he’s a good pick for a downsized game.

I’m sorry Diddy Kong. Perhaps another day.

New: Little Mac (Green), Min Min (Orange), Meta Knight (Purple)

I considered using Diddy Kong as "orange" for his brown fur, but that felt cheap since he's dominantly red to me. Meta Knight is one of the more glaring omissions, so got him out of the way. Little Mac is a personal favorite and I think Punch-Out's spot on the roster is well earned, so he joins some of the classic characters and established staples. Min Min is a more contemporary addition to keep the roster up to speed with the current console, alongside Pyra / Mythra. I contemplated adding the Ring Fit Trainee here instead, but I just added WFT a bit ago and I actually like Min Min quite a bit (although she could use a retooling). ARMS is notably one of the only new Nintendo IPs introduced in the last however many years the Switch has been out, so her addition feels valuable.

Bringing in newcomers is no easy task. It can be unpredictable, with recency bias (both for and against) likely a factor.

Bandana Dee is here because fan demand, and I can agree that modern Kirby has finally found his place.

Noah is here, without Mio. I like Mio, but I think Noah has the edge here, with his Blade. This may be it for Xenoblade for a while, unless we get a round for clones.

Ring Fit is the only really prominent new IP that has arisen since Smash Ultimate that I know of. I think that’s why it made more sense to focus more on series depth.

I can’t deny that Zelda is looking small with only three characters. And of course, I’m still itching for Diddy Kong to get in this roster.

Newcomer round!! I was wondering when we'd do one of these. It does make me feel like I could have held off on a couple characters I bit the bullet on early, but I'll make do. I guess this is the point where everyone’s rosters get a bit wacky, so I’ll indulge with some unorthodox fighters.

Off the Hook gives Splatoon a well earned second character(s), the idols are very important and popular characters within the series and I think Pearl and Marina offer the most dynamic contrast. They could fight alongside one another and have one tag in to take the lead while the other plays support - with Pearl being the offensive juggernaut and Marina playing patient defense. Excitebiker provides us with kind of an all purpose surprise character. He's iconic and his series is one of the bigger Nintendo IPs not yet on the roster, but a little guy permanently mounted on a bike is also grounds for an incredibly unique addition. I miss our "retro" and "WTF" type pulls so this is one that has grown on me a lot recently.

Chorus Kids represent Rhythm Heaven, which if I'm not mistaken is the most successful Nintendo IP absent from the roster. But that's a cover to say I'm adding one of my most wanted characters, I've wanted a RH character for years and I still love this angle on it. Off the Hook offers a music-oriented kit just as well, but while theirs is a bit more focused around direct combat and musical equipment the Chorus Kids offer a zanier toonier take on the subject. I believe there's room for both, in a series that has since neglected musical fighters and feels overdue for at least one. Rhythm Heaven's unique aesthetic and comedic flavor resembles nothing else we've seen thus far. And with that we have characters who span across several eras of Nintendo history - an old school arcade / NES pick, a mid 2000s pick (which are sparse overall) and popular Switch-era characters from a rapidly growing modern Nintendo series.

I like Pupp’s spread of third parties so far, and Northsouth has a handful of characters I’m looking out for (Little Mac, Chun-Li, Tom Nook). Lean in favor of North because their Pokemon lineup is stronger.

I actually dig DragonRobot’s roster quite a bit personally. A few things I’d do different or a few key players missing where I’m not voting it this time but I love the newcomer picks.

Ike: He helps expand Fire Emblem a little bit, and he is a popular character in Fire Emblem, and he’s been in SSB since Brawl. Also, Lucina fills a niche similar to Marth’s.
Meta Knight: He brings me a step closer to finishing Kirby’s core cast.
Pokemon Trainer (Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard): This is the Pokemon fighter that I wanted to add for awhile given the trainer’s importance and unique gimmick. but because I treat the trainer as three fighters instead of one, I needed to find room for them.
