I thought that way too well mostly for Smash 4 but is seems that the players here find another place to play smash 3DS online battle with friend.

Edit: hmm I cant join either then try this turn of you router then wait about 40 second and then turn on again also with your Wii too except the waiting also reset the connection on your Wii I mean Clear your setting and enter again sometime it help.
