I just download youtube vids that have the music I'm looking for then convert them to wav or mp3!
Anyone getting the new John Mayer album, Battle Studies, next month? I sure as hell am!
Also, is it just me or does anyone else thinks Mayer looks A LOT like Tofu on the new cover of his album!?
that's the trashiest way to do it ever, youtube sound quality is just about the worst imaginable

when you rip sound from youtube videos, i turns into mono which takes out some dynamics in the mixing and the bass starts clipping no matter what volume, at least in my experience.

maybe i'm not doing it right
i'll just stick to torrenting FLACs, the rawest of recordings

I hate that bass reducing feature so much.

I am nearly certain I can because I was like you once -- I used to not care about the iPod's ****ty factory headphones, didn't care about tinny sound and poor sound quality in general. But I listen to music, like, eight hours a day. At least. I am always listening to music, so after a while you can recognize any bit rate below 128 or so.

In a related topic, my Cowon mp3 player is coming into the mail any day now and I can't wait to see how much better the sound quality is over the crappy *** iPod / iPhone!

Actually, I do care about the quality of the music! But being able to distinguish like you say is far out!

the improvement in flac over even 320 kbps mp3 is noticeable. for the most obvious differences, listen to the drums. the hi-hat and crash will sound much clearer and the music overall just has a more life like quality.

get good headphones! there are good options at all price levels, and the differences are both much more noticeable and enjoyable than you think

your cheapest 'great' option is probably a set of Grado SR60's (i dont know if the new SR60i's are any better than the standard 60s that Grado has been selling for a solid decade). they run for about 70 dollars. do your research, you may want senheisers though depending on how and when you use your headphones, as well as what you listen to.

there are good headphones for less than 70 dollars too though, so look around.

awww yeah good s#it p on getting a cowon. i love their sound quality and eq options, theyre unmatched by any other. S9's are sexy. . .i settled for the d2 cuz i wouldnt be able to afford an s9 AND SR60s. what headphones do u have?

if you're not using high end equipment, it's all about v0. i did a double blind test with 320 and found i couldn't tell the difference. the size reduction is worth the [apparently small] dropoff in quality. on my rig i can only tell the difference between v0 and FLAC if i really strain myself [although it hasn't stopped me from getting some of my favorite albums in flac and mp3].

ive been wanting some high end headphones for a while now, but im too poor =[

yeah i havent tried out v0 vs. 320 yet. i can imagine it being an unnoticeable difference. even then, the space saved is probably worth it.

also, i havent examined the difference between flac and mp3 for older music. ive been thinking about whether or not recording technology was too limited for flac to be worth it for older music. ill test and post.

there will be a point where your gear will "limit" how much difference in quality you can hear. Its gonna be **** hard to differentiate 320 to FLAC on 5cent earphones while it'll be pretty **** easy on a $10k audio rig with appropriate transports and cabling.

as for me

FLAC to asio/wasapi to USB Zero DAC to sennheiser hd650

ahh bose and sennhd650 so legit im so friggin jealous of you guys.

jun ur setup makes me ****ing drool how much did u spend in total

and yeah most people dont have great headphones so i pointed out the drums which is apparent on most even halfway decent headphones. im hoping people dont use anything that came with their player.

and soundproofing is overrated. im pretty sure most cans that are soundproofed end up losing a bit in sound quality.

so i wanna buy some high-end headphones (or mid-high end, rather)
i can definitely be a stickler about sound quality
i would be using these to listen to music all hours of the day on my computer

anyone got any recommendations?
i'm looking at 50-130$ price range

if you want:

DETAIL, very shockingly neutral and not tweaked sound: Grado sr60 or sr80

Warm sound with decent attention to details : Sennheiser HD-555

the above are both headphones and they do take a good source to drive. If you want something that you can use even on an iPod for instance

Shure SE210's: canal earphones. sounds very good just a different experience than headphones

Etymotic ER4P: canal earphones that put an INSANE emphasis on detail and neutrality

agreed. Although canal phones and sound isolation/noise canceling does sound good, it doesn't sound as natural and free as "open" headphone such as hd650s and all grados. If you're half serious about listening to music, you would be in a quiet environment anyway. The best is just to have a decent pair of canalphones and a good open pair of cans so you can get the best out of your music at all times

i sugguest buying a usb interface too. You'll be saying "wtf? why does this sound so much better than before?"

i love the open sound, so i never really looked into canal earphones; heres what i know

on the low end of your range, i think the Koss PortaPro are like $50, and are pretty solid, but most recommend just spending 70 and going with sr60s.

i think grados are easier to drive than senn, so if you're not getting a preamp, id go with grado. also, if you're spending 130, you might consider throwing in another 20 (or maybe a little less somewhere online )to get grado sr125s. ive heard theyre worth it, although i havent tried them on myself. its supposed to be a big leap up from the sr80s, unlike sr80s from 60s.

i found sr80s to be a bit too bright for my personal taste (compared to 60s). while they seem to be a bit clearer and the bass was a little better, i really missed the mids in music that features a lot of ambient/reverb-y sounds (like subterranean homesick alien, or mars volta songs). for me, they just made songs sound bright when they werent really supposed to. this may just come down to music genre of preference.

i've had 2 pairs of shure e3cs, and they both broke, unfortunately

i'd rather have the big muff kind
honestly, i'm not a HUGE audiophile
i want a pair that i can use constantly, take to tournaments, and won't have to worry about breaking!
that would be excellent
also i don't think the sound output on my computer is even really that great
it's an asus p5b motherboard, no soundcard
don't have an mp3
could always buy one though

edit:
thanks for all the info guys
i'm leaning towards the sennheiser 555
i'm not entirely picky here, i guess the best pair would be the most balanced and durable

sennheisers and grados aren't particularly durable. I would never take out my senns or my grados outside one: cause they are open and two: because they just don't feel sturdy enough. Audio-Technicas or Denon's however are rock solid. They just don't sound as natural.

hmm alright

mostly it would just be to listen to music at home on my computer
is it that big of a difference with the drivers?
i'm thinking senn 555 or mid-level grados at this point

which would last me longer, which are more comfortable, which have a wider spectrum of uses?

i'm not SUPER picky about differences in sound quality
there's always a slim chance of me upgrading my rig or buying an mp3 player in the future

what are the main differences between the 2

Sennheisers are 10x more comfortable than Grados. Senns will cover your ears while grados have a pad that will rest on your ears.

senns would also sound much better with a variety of music and are more durable.

Grados are just too hardcore when it comes to sound reproduction and just too shocking.

save up money and get hd650s. you can get them for about 250. You'll basically never have to get another pair of headphones again.

yeah lol. To tell you the honest truth, I can't justify the price to sound difference between my 650's and my friend's 555's. Its gotta be limited by the DAC and amp.

I've actually played you before in teams at coast2coast. Me and PBS counterpicked jungle japes if you remember lol. Plz help me improve my fox lol.

it is very possible. We might also be housing norcal. I do have a pretty big house if everyone brings sleeping bags i can house like 20ish people? Plus i live with smashers. I live about 15 minute drive away from UCSD and I also go there if you didn't know. Just keep in touch with either me or azn_lep and you guys should be fine.
