So anyway I ran a tournament out where I am. We recorded some of the matches, but unfortunately not all of them. However, I do have two of the three Grand Finals matches available, and I'd like you guys to take a look and tell me where I fail.

Grand Finals Match 2 - Super (Mario) vs. Jawsome (Pikachu)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kcVxao25v8

Things I've already noted: I'm like a seasoned fisherman the way I'm looking for those kills. So bad. Also that Pikachu jolt spree during the rock formation is just embarrassing.

Grand Finals 3 - Super (Mario) vs. Jawsome (Pikachu)
http://youtu.be/P651nl-fOwM

Things I've noted: Second stock recoveries were absolute flubs, and the first stock was rife with poor mistakes. I'm using a controller that is prone to malfunction, so some of the more odd moments could be chalked up to that, or I'm just brain dead sometimes.

Anyway, suggestions for improvements, such as my apparent need to spam dodge rolls or my oddly successful I-can't-belive-this-worked Fox-like approach to Usmashes?

Edit:

Have some Winner's Finals Round 3 - Super (Mario) vs. Robjoe (Zero Suit Samus)
http://youtu.be/NJbbg9VSJQ4

And a random pools match because why not. - Super (Mario) vs. Red (Zero Suit Samus)
http://youtu.be/EWabdQ_tNa4

Super (Mario) Vs. Red (Sheik). Still pools.
http://youtu.be/rdQVOKoAwrE
a PM from a Mario main from Arizona, check him out.

I will add these in when I come around updating this thread again

I updated the thread with these ones, tell me if I missed any etc.

I recorded a bunch of games at the tourney I went to yesterday (I got 5th and Xero got 3rd, WHOO Mario), but from my webcam on my laptop so the quality is kind of sucky. I wanted to get some critiques though so if you guys are willing to suffer through the bad quality, I would REALLY appreciate some feedback. Let me know though. I understand if you don't want to watch some sucky videos though. I got some videos of me fighting Lucario, Falco, Diddy, Ike, Luigi, and Wolf. And also a few games of me playing Xero. What do you guys think?

So what do you think ? thx :)

Edit 2 : after having watched them atm, i feel like thoose two vids are a beat featuring myself doing some good things, but it's not the case :)

So my computer is crap(what else has changed, really), so it can no longer capture and record video - well, sort of. It can capture and stream, just... not record it as a video, so my attempts to show you guys my matches are a bit gimped at the moment.

I'd like to get an opinion on my Mario sometime, but the only way to do that is showing off some friendlies with my buddy via streaming our fights. Anyone interested in kicking back and watching a couple amateurs duke it out?

I'd be down for that but dial-up is a *****.

And when I have high speed later I'm going to be really into Skullgirls. Also there will be some kind've crazy party going on that I'm going to be ignoring for the most part.

Perhaps a better idea might be to let livestream capture the video and just have horrid quality, but still watchable. I am ashamed that I have no replays from my most recent tournament. I played pretty well.

Alright, I watched these, and was delightfully surprised that I noticed quite a few things that you could improve on that I saw. Right off the bat, your movement and mixups are pretty good when you're chill with Mario, but once the moments get tense I gotta say, Jesus be looking for you 'cause you're one hell of a fisherman. It was downright painful to watch FSmash after FSmash. GnW is not Luigi - FSmash is not safe on block!

Other things to notice was the almost supreme lack of uair. At first I thought you were saving it – Fresh uair is a great surprise kill move – but you never got that off, let alone attempted it. For one of Mario's number 1 moves, it was strangely absent, and I counted at least seven times a match where a good uair would have shifted the momentum your way. Not to mention one painfully obvious one that you flew right through.

Couple things about the GnW matchup that are good to note: Fireball bait. Keeping yourself at midrange with a couple of reverse fireballs can make a foolish move resolve into an early stock advantage. As soon as that bucket comes out, you can make one helluva move with a stutterstep FSmash – if you space it right, you can always sweetspot the horrendous lag that GnW gets whenever he actually captures something for his bucket. Use that in the endgame to steal his final stock by filling the bucket, then stutterstepping your FSmash. The full bucket can no longer bucket brake, meaning the light as hell GnW can't even stop himself from flying. It can really mean the difference.

Other things I noticed against your fights was a lack of cape stalling when GnW pushing you up with his uair. Too many times did that two dimensional character eat your double jump by uairing you, and he had you set up for some excellent frame traps because of it – although to be frank he never did. I imagine he wasn't aware of it. Uair is a helluva tool for GnW....

All in all, you played Brawl well, but I found your Mario to be lacking some of the skills that come specific to Mario – Uair, using F.L.U.D.D. in the middle of the action instead of during the downtime, fireball shenanigans, etc.

I didn't look at your other matches. And, one other thing, Reverse Aerial Rush Jump Cancelled USmash is a helluva drug, and a wonderful option against lighter opponents.

Man, that bpow was on point.
I suck at critiques but i'll give it a shot anyway. (on wario)

When you was playing bpow, you have difficulty spacing and bating against him.
Bair, f-tilt are good for spacing against wario's bite and cape can counter it as well.

He was shield grabbing so much, you could've mindgame that with a grab of your own just by falling in front of him or cape stall to make him drop his shield and fast fall with a bair or nair. (mario has options after cape stalling)

Wario is like the king in air kombat. Try to u-air him or up-b....just don't miss...he'll counter with u-air or fart.

Situational mario fact: If timed perfectly, mario can cape wario's fart....cape boost + wario's fart=Epic stock loss for wario.

oh yeah. mario is good at edge guarding...so whenever you get wario off stage...just jump off and give him a nice nair. (When he got his bike out)

THE QUALITY IS GODLIKE.

I mean seriously. Wow.
I made a point to ask if I should upload them because I said the quality was terrible and I was told to upload them anyway. I even said that the quality was terrible in the last post too… lol You don't HAVE to watch them anyway… I just want critiques from anyone who can stomach the bad quality to help me out with my Mario.

@Coolwhip: Thanks for the critique man! I played a friendly against Bpow afterwards on Lylat and was doing much better at spacing. He still beat me but I got a few nicely spaced fsmashes, etc. He was on point that day though for sure.

Hey guys, I have some videos from my most recent tournament performance back in April to show. The sound is off on both of them, so go ahead and mute the video and turn on some smooth jazz.

Tech_Chase (Wario) vs. Super (Mario) (Sound dysynch throughout)
http://youtu.be/72sDW4opmUI
Serious friendly.

DRDN(Random: Yoshi/Sheik) vs. Super (Mario) (Sound dysynchs in last 15 seconds of video)
http://youtu.be/HNHfFpK8odc
Bracket match.

I should mention that DRDN ran random all day and beat me in pools by getting Diddy Kong twice. 3-stocked his Ike, though. /shrug

More videos coming up, but my friend is having issues with his Movie Maker suddenly not accepting widescreen format anymore, so it might look weird.

EDIT: Those videos I said were coming are here. No music, just sound.

Super (Mario) vs. Robjoe (ZSS)

Could somebody upload some videos for me if I send you my replay files? Thanks in advance!

@Super: I watched your game vs TC. I'm a little surprised he didn't go DDD but maybe he didn't wanna be a jerk. idk lol

Anyway I would just say be careful of using up b when it is punishable with something like Wario's fart. The risk vs reward in that situation is too lopsided for up b to be beneficial there unless you KNOW you are going to land it. I'd use it more as an OoS option against Wario's Nair or something.

Also, you tend to try to always land right next to your opponent. Sometimes it's better to retreat in the air because landings are much more easily punished than grounded approaches because you have fewer options in the air. I noticed Tech Chase didn't punish you for landing next to him a whole lot but it is still something to watch out for because it will definitely get you punished against a lot of people. On a somewhat related note, be careful of attacking your opponent's shield recklessly. Dair is good for shield pressure and poking sometimes but you have to be smart about it or you will get punished. I remember seeing him grab you out of shield after you tried to hit his shield with a grounded dair. And that is just one example.

Be careful about approaching with Nair. There is almost always a better option rather than approaching with Nair. I'd use Nair more as an OoS option personally. I DO use it when my opponent likes to spot dodge, but even then, Dair is still a better option IMO.

In general, I would say mix in more OoS options, i.e. up smash, up b, nair, etc. to try to catch your opponent off guard. When you try to approach them, instead of attacking, every so often shield and see if you can get them to attack your shield and then up b or something.

You have a good start going here and I look forward to seeing more of your Mario! You are definitely improving so keep it up!
