I wouldn't say it's gone, it's just less viable and relies more on reads. Edgehogging is gone, but not exactly edgeguarding itself. Edgestealing as a new mechanic forces your opponent off and takes their ledge invincibility, putting them in a worse position, but they're less likely to repeat a previous option to get on stage. There's also hitting rising opponents before they snap to the ledge, I get a lot of stage spikes from hitting Zelda/Palutena/Mewtwo after teleports. I don't know why more people don't take the opportunities for both. There's also stage teching and immediately retaliating, which is so fun to do and see. Edgeguarding becomes easier and more prominent if you catch someone out of jumps. The overall edge and offstage game in this game gets pretty deep.
Ah, yes. I meant to say edgehogging. I tend to get them mixed up, sorry about that!

Same here. I get the two terms mixed up sometimes.

Also, the Sheik MU is easy for you Mason? I can understand PM but doesn't Sheik have a 0 to death combo on Roy in Melee?

I would be disappointed but not surprised if so the returning DLC veterans were virtually unchangwd, tbh. Mewtwo has no customs and a near identical moveset; Lucas looks the same. It really made Mewtwo disappointing when he had no customs; it felt like he was only half implemented as a character.
Thing is, Mewtwo wasn't a clone character, so he didn't need that many changes. He had a lot of moves repurposed and given new animations, so a common misconception is that Mewtwo wasn't changed, or wasn't changed much. We didn't see a lot of these changes in his reveal, so naturally, we will see much more from Lucas when he is released, who was a semi-clone at worst. Dr. Mario also has canon reasoning for being a clone, being Mario. It's not like he's Mario with a headband and robes, we'll be potentially getting that with Ryu.

I agree on the custom moves, I felt cheated out of the whole deal and a bit disgusted that he's DLC without one of the game's most in-your-face features. They'd better fix this at some point and give DLC characters customs.

Also, my plan (which a lot of people are on board for) is to vote for him to get a redesign.

-Pit was redesigned to fit in with his newest appearance and be more faithful to source material
-Bowser and Yoshi were low tier multiple times, with Mewtwo being low tier in his one appearance, so they were redesigned from the ground-up to be fixed, keeping their fundamentals. Roy was low-tier

Since Roy suffers both of these issues, I've been getting people to bring the issue up in the ballot and ask for a redesign, with his Awakening appearance, two birds with one stone to beat the haters.

Your right about Mewtwo not needing changes but Lucas doesn't need to be changed either TBH. He plays much more unique than Ness does already so he's good to go.

Also, I really want to see DLC characters get customs like all the other characters have. It makes the DLC characters feel half-assed really.

As someone who's mained Ness since 64 and is currently practicing with Lucas in Brawl for his return in Smash 4, I can confirm this. You gotta play him with an entirely different mindset from Ness to use him effectively, and aside from his specials (Which even then have different attributes) all his moves are unique, so a change to him is not really needed.

As for customs, yeah, I really hope the DLC characters get them.

The lack of customs for Mewtwo is disappointing for me as well. We could only hope they'll get added down the road.

I feel like, it's justifiable if they want to give Roy some new, unique moves because we already have Lucina as a Marth clone. Or, I could see them pushing for a more unique Roy because of this. At the very least, I'd say Roy would be fleshed out similarly to Ganon/Falco.

also I'm back from my absence

I really liked how Lucas played in Brawl, and I consider him to have one of the best movesets in the series.

About the custom moves DLC, if Sakurai goes through with it, he could release them in a pack like the mii outfits DLC.

For example,
Mewtwo Custom Moves Pack 1 (Insert price)
Mewtwo Custom Moves Pack 2 (Insert price)

That's how I think it will go if Sakurai makes it happen for Mewtwo and all the other DLC characters.

If Sakurai can release Mii fighter outfits as paid DLC, then he should do the same with the custom moves DLC.

Lucas has some of the most fun ATs in Brawl imo. I really hope they all return since it's one of the main reasons he's my Brawl main. More importantly, I'm just itching to spam SH PKFs all day, every day. :chuckle:

But yeah, since Lucas hasn't been released yet, it's possible he could still receive some minor tweaks. Not that I don't think he's unique enough as is, it's just kinda understandable if they don't make drastic moveset changes with someone like Lucas. We'll have to wait and see how would they handle Roy in the end.

I'm pretty sure Roy will get the Falco/Ganondorf treatment, seeing as how he probably was going to be in Brawl, and I doubt they would have kept him the same, considering there are no true clones in it.

Welcome back, by the way!

Agreed, Lucas is one of my favorite characters and mains in Brawl. He's a lot of fun to use.

I feel like Roy being similar to Ganon/Falco is the more likely situation... but man, do I really want to be surprised with some more drastic changes lol.

Still, I won't complain if we get Roy. I'd welcome him with open arms however they'd handle him.

If we do get Roy, my poor :4shulk: would have to be demoted to a secondary (my mentality is that, I only have 1 main, and a few secondaries). Guess I'm gonna have to put all my energy and focus on Roy. This actually might be a good thing, since I still haven't found a secondary. it took me years to find and settle with my Brawl main and secondaries lmao

I have that same mentality, however, I only played Link from 64 to Brawl. Thanks to Subspace, I learned a few more characters, but I believe I can only have a few secondaries, and my knowledge of my secondaries is good enough to fight, but imo not good enough to be considered a secondary. Well, maybe I should say as a second main. My knowledge of Link puts my Link skill on an entirely different level than any of my secondaries due to having devoted only serious time to learning Link for the better part of 6 years.

Edit: The only reason I have Snake listed as my Brawl main is that he became one of my secondaries when I played Brawl, then after I played Project M I couldn't willingly go back to Link in Brawl and Smash 4 was the final nail in my Brawl Link's coffin. Snake became promoted to my main, my newfound love for MGS played a big part in that.

Haha, we're the opposite in that sense, then. I have tons of both mains and secondaries, and :roypm: will definitely be on there on the top, but :4shulk: will continue being my top main alongside him and these guys:4ness: :4gaw: :4sonic: :4lucas: :4mewtwo: (Hopefully :wolf:, too).

During the earlier days of playing SSB4, Ike was my main just like in Brawl. In Brawl, it used to be Marth, until I preferred Ike because of his moveset and power. I have played Ike a lot, including For Glory. I wasn't very good with Marth at that time, but it all changed.

As I went on with SSB4, I have not played Ike as often as I once did as I switched to Marth to play online. I have gotten so used to playing Marth that I have gotten much better with him and I played him very often.

Ike used to be my main, but I recently switched to Marth. So if Roy comes back, he would be my new primary Main. If I can play Marth and Lucina very well, I should have no problem trying out Roy when he comes back as DLC.

I play over ten characters in Smash 4, but only consider 3 to be secondaries due to knowing them a better, but not as well as my Main.

I play who ever I want in Sm4sh but I'm only "good" with a select few Roy will be top priority when he comes out with a brawler sub to handle his worse mu's along with playing all the other characters I play for funzies

In Sm4sh, I really only focus on getting good with Robin and Sheik. Most of the other characters that I play are for fun, when I'm bored. But Robin is going to have to share a spot with Roy when he comes back.

I sorta am still experimenting if to stay aggro player in a defensive-focused game like Smash 4 (though Yoshi has started to feel compelling), but I still play Peach for most of the time.
Marth has lost all appeal from me due being too gimmick/tipper-reliant and under-performing character (hence me playing Lucina instead, she's more flowing to how I played used to play Marth like).

I hope to replace Marth with Roy incase he seems more potent and fun to play, of course. He might become my go-FE-character like Marth formerly was - even if I like Robin, he's not necessarily my most truly beloved FE-character like Roy is when considering Smash). Lucy I play mostly for play-style purposes, really.

I have a great idea for Roy's flare blade. He should get the eruption treatment when he comes back. What I mean by "eruption treatment" is that Roy's flare blade should have the invincibility frames that Ike has with his eruption.

Ike had changes with his eruption in SSB4 by having his flames blue (He is the "Hero of Blue Flames" after all.), and a shining effect notifying the player to release it to avoid recoil damage.

In Project M, Ike's eruption has the stage and background shaking effect while charging it. And they gave Project M Ike some of the stuff Roy's flare blade had, including the fiery visuals and the white flashing visuals around Ike when charging it further.

About the shaking effect and the invincibility frames from the eruption, here: https://youtu.be/SlMbCcgq_tg

In SSB4, we all know his fire will be still be orange like in Melee. Roy's flare blade should be shaking the stage and the background as he charges it like Project M Ike, and he needs the shining effect like SSB4 Ike has to allow the player to choose to avoid self-damage.

And one thing I would prefer for his standard special is for Roy's loud scream to stay as it was in Melee when it's a fully charged flare blade. When Ike charges his eruption to the maximum in SSB4, he remains silent when releasing it. This is the link to what I mean by remain silent with the self-damage:
https://youtu.be/WyQBM3kejNk?t=986. Start the video at 16:24 and you'll see what I mean.

I think that felt out of place for Ike when he didn't make a loud scream when releasing a fully charged eruption. Like for example, how does a person stay perfectly silent when releasing a fully-charged special move that does fiery damage to himself as if it wasn't very self-damaging?

Roy's loud scream should stay at the fully-charged state of flare blade in SSB4, unlike for what they did to Ike.

I wonder if Sakurai's giving Roy that shining effect Ike's eruption has in SSB4, because both Roy and Ike have the fire-charging standard specials that hurt themselves when charged to the maximum. We may see what could happen with him in June 16th.

There was this one time I absolutely resented Robin's fans and even Robin himself for getting confirmed: because not only Chrom's fans didn't have to deal with millions of "Chrom Deconfirmed/FalconPunched/Friendzoned/-jokes, but we also had to deal with people making fun of the fans themselves for even "putting faith/support" on him, and what else complete toxic bull**** that went down. There was this Robin-fan who liked all my posts about me wanting to see Chrom in Smash after he got deconfirmed, out of irony-induced comedy. It really, really hurt my feelings, even if I talked down on him about it.

While I later discovered it was due Chrom's "supporters" in mix of real fans being absolutely mean-spirited and pulling superiority card on them, the way Robin-fans retaliated was unneeded and just inbeneficial to the community's growth, considering how I predicted how just far and as of now completely the blows on Chrom would settle in and render him to the deserving unpopular character that is just used as a fangirl bait/play-toy. The kicker to all this was that I genuinely liked Chrom and wanted him to pop in with a good appearance in Sm4sh ... and was joyfully surprised when Robin exhibited his skills, bringing in magic from FE-games, as they were my favorite thing.

Nowadays I can't even watch Robin's trailer because it seems to open the wound I was inflicted with all the toxic posts and acts on me as Chrom's supporter. Might sum it with beginning of this video clip:

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize for any rude or offensive acts we Robin supporters may have committed since Robin's confirmation. Many of us Robin fans were hurt after the events of the Gematsu leak; at that time, we had to deal with people who came into our own thread just to call us idiots, and it was virtually impossible to speak of Robin as a serious possibility without being greeted with ridicule and contempt. Robin's confirmation was a vindication for us. Of course, that doesn't justify reciprocating the behavior of our own attackers... On behalf of the Robin fanbase, I apologize.

Now, on the subject of Roy... If he does get in, you have my congratulations, and it's my hope that, if the time comes, Roy supporters will help do away with the toxic nature that corrupts the speculation community.

I would agree with you, if we didn't have Toon Link to begin with.
Lol, Roy is even closer to Lucina moveset-wise than Young Link is to Toon Link  Unfortunately for Clink, he just doesn't have the same popularity; his saving grace would be a Fierce Deity Final Smash, but that's probably not enough to convince all parties. I'd expect Pichu more than Clink.

Chrom was in the Gemastsu leak right? It would make sense for people to think that he would be in the game though Robin and Lucina are better reps for Awakening then he is IMO.

I can't really blame the Gematsu-leak for really "controlling" people, for it had got so many things right at that point, anyway. I can't still stop commending for Robin-fans for staying strong in those days and fighting against all the detractors. Sweet, sweet victory during the day Robin was revealed, too.

For that reason I just want them to understand that Roy's fans are going through this sort of hate constantly (though in many other fashions and reasonings, hum)

Oh, it was certainly reasonable to think that at the time. With or without the Gematsu leak, Chrom was widely regarded as one of the most likely candidates for Smash; an Awakening character seemed like an obvious choice, and Chrom was the obvious choice for that obvious choice.

But it became problematic when 90% of the speculation community began acting like Chrom was confirmed, and used that belief to justify harassing the minority who thought otherwise.

What was different about YLink then From Tink?
Nair, bair, fair (Tink-1 hit, Clink-2 hits), dair (Tink-plummets, Clink-remains airborne), upsmash (Tink-1 hit, Clink-3 hits), triple A (Tink hits once, Clink can hit multiple times), bombs (Tink-1 hit, Clink-multiple hits), and arrows (Tink-normal, Clink-fire, though Tink can have Fire Arrows as a custom move)... Interestingly, Clink has more in common with Link than Tink.
Versus Roy and Lucina, who differ with their B move, upsmash (Lucina-1 hit, Roy-multiple), Up-B (" "), third hit of side special while tilting downward (" "), and fourth hit of side special while tilting downward (" ") oops thinking of Project M lol.

Basically. It's a recurring and very harmful practice within Smash-community, and tends to usually turn people against each other while also characters themselves into pretty hated figures thirsting for bad karma, for they're always seen as overrated bandwagons of the month (Chrom, Ridley, etc).

Not to mention it always keeps painting Smash Bros-series in the whole"salt on wounds"-mentality that is always brought on fans of their (usually deconfirmed) characters. Ergo, all the Roy Koopa-jokes, Chrom as Ridley's Wyvern Rider, Waluigi being infamous and ugly, disturbing mascot to the "rejected" (Assist Trophies), the playable roster almost worshipped and praised like they're gods and only important things in the spotlight (so we just have to hope for our wanted characters be in to even see them being anything sensibly and humanly represented in the fandoms, etc. This is why I can't get behind Awkward Zombie's cringe humor playing with Roy and Wolf, honestly)

It really leaves a bad taste of elitism on the gut, and not only had me personally want every popular, heavily supported or important character be in Smash - but also had me turn away from Smash's fandom in public activity, as Smash-series felt too light-hearted and memetic for me to get out more of as a more seasoned Nintendo-fan, especially with it's underlying crossover theme being really downplayed characters liking cute little blobs, salty jokes on expense of NPCs, Samus being a guy magnet, more salty jokes in expense of NPCs, all the strange memetic and stereotyped depictions of characters that are forced to be seen as attractive or badass...

It's not really like I wanna hate the fans, they really do cool stuff now and then, but this sort of mindset has long time then become a standard that I have to deal with: I've got sick of it due over-exposure, but still suffer little exposure to anything more deeper to discover about the series.

(A very good summing is the Smash-based headcanons which keep always being too random or based just on the person writing them, while also appealing to the fandom quirks and jokes circulated like usual. It's ´thus not easy to find anything remotely reconstructive or concisely, sensibly written things. I might blame most fans being knowledged by characters through their Smash-appearances, but at least some of them should be also familiar of them from their games to not make them think they'd do silly things or grow fascination to each other for no reason other than crack. It's becom excessive, really.)

And well, Roy's sweetspot is on the base whereas Lucina's is balanced. Which changes how the character plays almost entirely.

I guess leaks can do that to any fanbase and given at one point of time, Sakurai was actually planning on making Chrom playable so I can see where that arrogance derives from.

Personally, Chrom was my least favorite character out of the 3 main characters in Awakening (Robin, Lucina. and Chrom). Robin using magic attacks mostly instead of being a pure sword fighter pretty much makes him much more unique than Chrom could ever be and Lucina, IMO is much more interesting than Chrom is so her filling the role of Marth clone also makes sense. Not only that but Chrom works really well in the Final Smash role IMO.

Waluigi being infamous and ugly
If theirs any character that takes more crap than anyone else, it's Waluigi. And most of it is because "he hasn't been in a main series Mario game" which is pretty stupid if you ask me.

Ridley and Waluigi are the only 2 characters that are blacklisted for Smash. Ridley is blacklisted for being "too big" while Waluigi is blacklisted for "not being in a main series Mario game".

And well, Roy's sweetspot is on the base whereas Lucina's is balanced. Which changes how the character plays almost entirely.
I was only pointing out the more apparent visual differences for attacks, but that goes without saying :)

I didn't pay much attention what went on with the Robin and Chrom fanbases post-Robin reveal that much. But you shouldn't have to apologize on the behalf of every Robin supporter who was rude or offensive -- it wasn't in your control. Those people should be the ones apologizing as I mostly think this is a case to case basis, but you know how people can be very prideful sometimes. Not really expecting them to.

But thank you.

Not everyone likes Roy and would want to see him return. And that's fine -- you can't force a person to like every character. If Roy ends up getting confirmed, I just hope both sides won't be toxic, but I can't make any guarantees. I feel like there should be some sort of peace treaty singed beforehand lol. If Roy returns, it'll sure be something, I'll tell ya that much. Note to self: avoid gamefaqs at all costs

Yeah, even before the leak, there was the whole, "Chrom's inevitable!" joke thing... but I do think some people were genuinely serious on that.

Any peace treaty that we try to sign with the haters/detractors will end up burning like the ph1r3. Their not interested in that kind of stuff.
