Yeah, unfortunately Ridley fans really have it rough, which is absurd considering up until Sakurai's statement on him he was the most wanted character for Smash Bros.
Its like that saying, when you are the top of the world, your friends know you, but when you are down on the ground, you know your friends. I feel unfortunately for many characters and for much of the existing support, its not really legitimate ironically. Just others jumping on a hype train, or supporting a character due to a loudmouth riling others to do so.
With Roy and Miiverse, I was pretty sure he was actually pretty popular there. I know pro-Roy stuff gets a lot of likes, and of course there is the Lonely Roy comic series which has a notable following.
As for new Roy fans joining in, I am pleased to see it. As royalblue pointed out, its like a FE game. Some of us have been here since the first map, while others of us have joined towards the end of the campaign, regardless we are all still a part of Roy's "army".
It was certainly bad years back. The detractors like to throw the "we don't need two Marth clones line", but even before that they still based their attacks on Roy for being a clone, and used various other lines to say why we should feel bad for liking Roy. The most amusing were the ones were they said that Sigurd was originally planned instead of Roy and/or the Japanese fanbase didn't like Roy and/or FE6. Both got resoundingly debunked (though I still see a loudmouth or two contest the idea that Roy is popular). The idea that Roy's files in Brawl meant nothing, also blew up in their face.
The road to victory is still long, but together we ride. Welcome aboard all you new Roy fans.
