New leak with yet again "a trusted source" claims the 20th of July will reveal Ashley. So, if anything big is happening, like a mini direct on the 20th hold onto your seatbelts!

I would assume that Smash Boards was toxic during the Brawl days was because Nintendo Loyalists who did not want Third parties in the game were upset.

Possibly, although even after the 3rd party floodgates opened Megaman and Geno got a lot of support. I tend to think that the competitive Melee scene shaped the Smash community. Now that Smash is more known worldwide, more casual fans who have a curiosity and want to learn more about Smash's rich history or just want to show their admiration for the characters have joined the community and helped dilute the toxic part.

It has been awhile since the last mini direct, and with so much to share I would be surprised if there were none for July.

I do think another Nintendo event is likely in the cards for July. Nothing for the 3DS at E3 is the biggest indicator of this, and I imagine they have more they want to show off from those games announced earlier in the year as well as a couple of surprises for both 3DS and Switch. I imagine they'll want to highlight some more games coming this fall. A Nintendo Direct Mini seems reasonable to me. Though I'm slightly more inclined to believe August as we rarely get a Nintendo Direct two months in a row. I'd expect a character reveal one way or another at said event.

These leaks are likely piggy backing off the increased viability of Ashley as a Smash candidate unfortunately. I'd say Ashley has broke into the mainstream of Smash predictions after E3 and the various factors in her favor. I suspect we'll see her show up on just about every "leak" until she is either confirmed or deconfirmed. I feel like Ashley is now a good way to try to make a leak seem more legitimate as a result, as she is realistic, but also not quite super obvious yet either.

That's the thing. Ashley is practically the only major "relevant"/new character I have a ton of interest in. I'm so usually skewed towards the classic and more obscure characters yet to be in Smash, it's a nice treat to be involved in supporting a character who people can't argue til their blue in the face of being irrelevant or not having appeared in a game for X amount of years. That's telling of how good a job you all have done, and her character has done, in winning me over as a supporter considering how many older and "irrelevant" characters I tend to support and love (If you can't tell I despise relevancy posts with regards to Smash)

I was very disappointed; I remember friends on Miiverse sending me posts to see how I was taking the news. I really felt Ashley had good chances then... surprised and disappointed to see her as just an Assist Trophy, though later happy that she at least got in as an Assist Trophy. I feel that the Assist Trophy appearances, whilst disappointing deconfirmations, do give the characters more spotlight and in turn create quite a few supporters for them for the next SSB entry.

That said, I do have a funny story regarding the assist trophies. Back when Brawl was announced, I didn't have the internet, so I found my information on the game through very secure school computers or through my Nan's recent internet upgraded computer. It all new to me is the point though, so knowing where to find this info was a huge mystery to me. I was looking up for more info on Brawl when I stumbled onto IGN's pages showing screenshots, which had me staring at the screen in disbelief. In those screenshots it showed Hammer Bros, Knuckle Joe and Dr Wright in Super Smash Bros... and had me thinking they were playable characters. I later learned they were Assist Trophies, but it had me questioning for a couple days why Sakurai decided to include Knuckle Joe over King Dedede or even make Hammer Bros a playable character in the first place (Dr Wright I was cool with, new Nintendo series representation is usually a plus, even though I'm still to this day unsure of the IP's ownership and whether it counts as Nintendo or not).

Besides, as bad as that was, nothing will match how bad Starfy fans had it. I've got to say, seeing Starfy de-confirmed was a terrible Christmas present.

I was a fan of Ashley during Smash 4, but on a more casual level, so that now-infamous "Pic of the Day" was more of a pleasant surprise to me than anything.

As far as a WarioWare/3DS Direct goes, should one actually happen, I wouldn't count on a Smash reveal of any character. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a Smash trailer has ever been a part of any game-specific Direct, only the bigger Nintendo Directs. I suppose it's possible, but it isn't a thing that happens regularly, if at all (up to this point).

-There's a few characters I'd like but it's more to get some representation for their series rather than the characters themselves (Advance Wars rep, Starfy, Arle Nadja),
-There's a few characters I'd like but ultimately don't really care if they makes it or not (King Boo, Sukapon, Saber, Marx).

But there's one exception, one character I really want to see added and be disappointed if she doesn't make it and that would be Ashley.

I'm a very recent fan you see, I may have known about her since Brawl, when two theme songs really stood out for me, Ridley's theme and the english version of Ashley's but I ended having more interest in knowing about Ridley thanks to his two boss fights.
After that I forgot about her until her confirmation as an assist trophy in smash 4, I remember being very surprised about the outcry back then for what seemed to me to be just some random side character in Wario Ware who wasn't Mona.

It's only when this new smash was announced and I took the time to research a few characters to support instead of putting all my eggs in one unlikely Ridley basket that I remembered about said outcry and took a look at Ashley and I wasn't disappointed, her theme song was as good as I remembered, her design is adorable, her sections tends to be my favorite parts in the Wario Ware games she's in and there's just so much you can do between her magic powers and Red ability to transform.

So, yeah, I know I can't ask Sakurai much more after Ridley but if he's willing to give me just this one last character I would be 100% satisfied with the roster for a very, very long time.

I'm a few years late to the party, but if there one more room in this haunted mansion, then I'm in.

Oh I can answer you this one. After Snake got revealed, Sakurai mentioned that he wanted to add in a few more third party characters, and then evnetually Sonic won the poll for most requested third party character. Sonic had one hell of a huge fanbase, but it also met with a strong anti-base that consisted of anti-third party people, and people who just flat out hate Sonic, and think Mega Man or a more "worthy" third party should make the jump. Geno was also a third party character that had support, but Geno fans were of course clashing with Daisy, Waluigi, and Toad fans, but ultimately none of those four made it in SSBB, heh heh.

I would say that some only consider it a "slap in the face" because of perspective. Objectively, yes, Assist Trophies are ways to give popular characters spotlights while not dedicating an entire month (plus) to their playability, but people with biases towards certain characters are just going to see an Assist Trophy as the inability to play as the character they want. That's the dangerous line of the Assist Trophy: do you want to give obscure franchises like Joy Mech Fight and Color TV a spotlight, while simultaneously rubbing salt in a few emotionally invested fans' wounds, or have nothing at all? I personally prefer the former.

Of course, that being said, I'd prefer to take the third option and just have Ashley be playable, but only time will tell...

I think assist trophy implies what you said, but people just see that the character wasn't a priority to use resources on to become playable. That could be because they lack prominence in their series, relevance, they're too hard to implement, they aren't that popular, or they don't add much new as a fighter.

If Ashley doesn't get in, it would be because she didn't measure up in those areas compared to the newcomers we'll be getting. To someone really invested and perhaps jaded, It's like the developers confirming all the points naysayers have made.
