Today, I was sitting in front of my friend Filip's computer, playing Bejeweled Blitz. He told me it was boring or something, I don't know, all I remember is that I regained consciousness when I realized that he had pressed alt+F4 and my game had disappeared from the screen. Holding back my rage, I watched as he started up another game, Bioshock.

"This game is really, really good" he said and pressed Load Game. "I'll take you to an early level".

I had been thinking of getting Bioshock before. This was my chance to see if it was my kind of game. As the gameplay started, my crossbow wielding character entered a room with a disgusting looking man stuck to some kind of contraption. He was talking about stuff I probably should have learned by playing to this point of the game. Filip grabbed the mouse and went to the menu screen.

"No, wait! This isn't the beginning... It's the last boss. Let me get an easier level for you."

"It's okay, let me get owned" I told him.

I returned to the game and walked around the arena where I was supposed to fight. The human-like boss remained stuck.

"Walk up to him" said Filip.

I did as he said. The game told me to press E, and so I did. Suddenly, a huge syringe appeared and stabbed the man-thing in the chest. He broke loose and started floating around, throwing fireballs.

I clicked a bunch of keys in order to find the dash button, and when I reached the shift key, a screen appeared. It looked like if it was some kind of extended weapon selection.

I pressed the number keys where weapons are usually located in FPS games and found a monkey wrench as my melee weapon. I thought, while I was going to die anyway, I might as well try to beat him to death in the manliest way possible.

To my surprise, not only did the wrench do considerable damage to Mr. Man-Thing, but he also became frozen solid. This gave me a chance to use my crossbow on the guy, and after a few shots, he returned to his contraption. When I walked toward it, Filip shouted "PRESS F! PRESS F!".

I did as he said and my health returned to 100%. After giving the boss another shot in the chest, he started dashing around again, and this time, his attacks had changed slightly. Once again, I used the weapons I had to obliterate him within a minute and then pressed F to regain full health. After doing this one more time, I gave him another shot and... won?

I... beat the game? I had played the last level of a game I knew NOTHING about and had won the first time I tried. It wasn't even challenging, Filip told me I could have pressed F and regained health a few more times.

Is THIS what modern FPS single player games are like? Since I'm a Mac user, I haven't played any since the first Unreal back in the 90s but I'm sure there was ANY difficulty to speak of back then. Perhaps I'm judging an entire genre by the last boss of Bioshock, but this was just ridiculous.

The last boss isn't that hard at all. Big Daddies put up a better fight than he does. By the end of the game you'll be equipped with many gene tonics, plasmids, and weapons. Plus, you get something naturally through the game's plot that allows for 25% less damage taken from attacks.

Bioshock isn't too hard unless you turn off vita-chambers. Basically, if you die in Bioshock, you'll be revived right after in a vita-chamber. It's like a checkpoint but all the damage you did to an enemy is still present. Gamplay-wise, this makes the game easier unless vita-chambers are shut off. Storyline wise, it's brilliant and makes complete sense.

I'd say you're judging it from this one boss, though yes it's the final boss and should have been much better.

FPSs have multiple difficulty levels for a reason.

And Bioshock is one of the best games made in recent times, if only because of its story.

IDK about bioshock, but any PC ports of games are typically easier because the control scheme is so much better, ESPECIALLY for FPS.

You can aim literally twice as fast, switch to the weapons you want instantly, hit individual pixels with ease and jump/spin like crazy so much more easily than a console FPS. So if bioshock has the same difficulty as it does for the console versions, you will find it easier. I know an example of a game that acknowledges that is Dragon age origins on the pc which for each difficulty level, it gives enemies 50% more health or doubles their resistances etc to compensate for the fact that consoles are much more harder to control accurate and you will make a lot more mistakes using a controller.

I've only played part of the demo of Bioshock (scared the living hell out of me), so I can't really say much about the game as a whole, but I can say this:

The last boss isn't necessarily the hardest part of the game, for one. Metroid Fusion has some pretty difficult bosses, but I wouldn't put the SA-X/Omega Metroid in the top 3 hardest bosses of the game, for example.

Also, Bioshock is supposed to have an amazing storyline -- but I've never heard someone say "You have to play Bioshock, the gameplay is so much fun". There are games that don't necessarily need to excel in difficulty to still excel as a game in general -- the Phoenix Wright games are a great example.

And in fairness, few games can stand up against the awesomeness that is Frown.

Defences aside, that DOES seem pretty ridiculous...you shouldn't be able to beat the final boss of a game without any experience in the game. You might argue that it's an FPS and someone familiar with FPSs may be able to figure it out quickly, but Bioshock really isn't your traditional FPS...so that's hard to argue.

Congrats, though. Even if it is on the easy side I'm still pretty sure it took some skills to do that. It kind of reminds me of the times (especially in Pokémon) when I go to fight the final boss just for fun to see how far I can get before I die, and then I end up winning. Except that's far less of an achievement, I just don't think I'm ready and it turns out I am.

Oh wow, people commented on this thing.

GO GO MULTI-REPLY

I never asked what difficulty level it was. Doubt it was any higher than Easy.

Well, now I know what happens in the ending cutscene. Heh. Heh.

Who plays Bejeweled Blitz?
I do. Every single day. And I won't stop until I reach 500k.

I do have experience with FPS games for the computer, but not single player ones. God knows how many hours I've spent on the Call of Duty 1 multiplayer.
