The How To Play Captain Falcon Guide

First of all,i speak spanish so sorry if my grammar isnt very good,i wrote this one night that i realized my playstyle wasnt the only one and wanted to share my founds with people

NOTE:if you disagree on any part of this post or want to give advice/suggestions post them on this thread, i will really appreciate it(also, this is my first faq-like stuff so slow on me)

also keep in mind that this is a guide, meaning that you may or may not like it depending on your playstyle/preferences,its just a guide for getting out the maximum potential/fun of this great character
__________________________________________________________________________

Know your stuff

learn the Interruptible As Soon As(IASA) frames of your character can really make a difference in battle(apply this to all chars, not only capn)doin this you can make every single attack combo to another except(maybe) falcon punch, which is your most laggy, short ranged and most powerfull attack(and the most manly, fiery and allmighty combo finisher ever seen on a game)

For what the hell you have them?

tilts are a ****,we all know it,but they are a good ****,after you learned shffle and stuff, when was the last time you ever tried to do dtilt to nair? or an ftilt to falcon kick?

captains smashes can look slow and punishable, but they are awesome and you know it,try to do them after a stomp or a throw to mix things up,they arent as worthless as you think

falcons throws all have the same purpose:setups, basically his only good ones for that matters are up and down throws, back and forward are just to knock offstage or something, be creative XD

seriously,DONT BE BIASED,you have a versatile sexy killing machine in the suit of a futurist nascar racer on your control, dont screw it up doing the same **** over and over.

Practice combos

we all know falcon is the god of comboing in melee, but ****ing hell, dont do always the same cheap combo, you have plenty of options to start with, and to end with, try ftilt, dtilt and knee, basic but still quick and unexpected, there are lots of variations starting with one of those 3 simple attacks

practice some combos on lv1 cpu(real people for better results) and multi-nairing on lv1 marth(then link when you get the hang of it)

Tech chasing

falcons speed and throws make him one of the most effective tech chasers on the game along with fox and sheik, try practice this often with someone to help you, because this is not one of those things you can practice by yourself, you will need to work on your reflexes and react on certain circumstances.

falcons tech chase options are:

raptor boost(side-b) this one is great all around for tech chasing, and maybe the best of the game at it,combos stupidifiyingly well to a knee, and can lead to grab on fastfallers at mid-high %

knee(fair...nah make it just knee) if you can predct a roll, spotdodge or tech in place, this is your chance to make them cry, also leads to another knee if your opponent does it again.

grab-dthrow/uthrow:falcons grabs are awesome as hell, uthrow tech chase fastfallers at the right percent(wavedash back or forward depending on where they DI,and remember that some can tech in place-shine...),and use dthrow to space yourself when you are seeking a knee/tech chase, you dont wanna get hit right?

Behold the master of tech chasing:Darkrain

Be a mofo

when your opponent doesnt expect a thing do it,freaking do it,like you are spamming knees all around, and your opponent has your attack pattern,so you are missing all of them, now do a raptor boost when he dodges one, then knee,if he dodged the raptor boost,he still has in mind you are a mofo, and will think you will spam that now, time to knee XD, if you land one at some viable momment, chain a falcon kick to it to mix things up, that will make him pee his pants, now keep spamming stuff.

Dont be a mofo?

you always wanna get your opponent offguards to knee them, but for that you wanna keep your arsenal fresh by dont spamming things, but sometimes you actually wanna spam things(nair recommended) to get them to think you cant stop spamming stuff and that you dont wanna stop spamming, thats your chance,he will think you will do something and you grab/knee/**** whatever you think at the momment

Mindgaming your opponent

one of falcons perk is his speed, but in order to use it,you need to think when and how to attack, making your opponent do the things you want, and putting them on a better position for you to attack them, thats what mindgaming is(or what i got that was, gimme some ideas in it please)

i will quote HawaiianJigglyPuff on this:
I'd say Falcon is one of the more difficult characters to pick up because you NEED mindgames. And by mindgames, I mean out-smarting your opponent. Tech chasing, predicting, quick reactions. You need all of this and this goes under out-smarting your opponent. Combos are nice ... but you really can't combo without the mindgames.
Some advice on comboing

1)never rush a god**** combo, seriously, after a nair whats next? think about it on that milisecond you have to,knee at low% might get you grabbed because the lack of hitstun from the nair(though it gives you enough shieldstun to buffer a roll),uair would be a better option, hard to land too at low%,bair to mix it up? i dunno... stomp is quite more viable, but thats your choice, not mine

2)know when to make a move, yeah, good example is what i realized not so long time ago,i always made my shffle as fast as my hands permited me to,but it turned back on me in comboing, like,i naired someone to try a nair-uair-knee(basic falcon combo) but the uair didnt hit him! why? because he was already too low, nowdays i wait for being almost at ground level to uair someone(only when they are still falling or are fastfallers)

3)be creative,i know its hard on the heat of a battle, but if you dont try new stuff, you are never gonna improve, mix things up with random moves here and there to see how they work out at certain situations

4)stomp is your best friend in comboing,it gives your opponent enough hitstun to land any attack and make it combo, even falcon punch(stomp+falcon punch is called tapion punch for future references, and can be done easily on fox/falco from 70%-80%)

5)nair is awesome,is a perfect combo starter,an incredible reseter if you land only first hit,and an excellent option all around to mix up a combo

The surprise factor

one of,if not THE best falcon tactics is the surprise factor(just look at that speed dammit)

EXAMPLE:your foe is a ganon recovering to stage(FD)

one of this two might happen(and has happened to me)

1)you try to knee him and he airdodges, you end on the recovery side, bad idea

2)you think before acting and mindgame him to try to up+b you,he pays for it

from the second you have other 2 options:

1)you punish that rush up by kneeing him, uber success, congratulations

2)you punish that rush up,by kneeing him but the knee fails and sends him backwards onto stage( you were the one rushing if that happened)

from the second you have other 3 options(falcon gives ya lots of options see?)

1)you didnt expect that, but your opponent did, meaning you were predictable(by rushing on all that is)

2)you didnt expect that, but your opponent also didnt(and says YOU GOT MINDGAMED SON... proving hes a ***** and that he didnt expect it)

3)you had this possibility in your mind and reacted to it,your opponent expected to be dead at the momment so you catch him offguard(YEAH BOY) and he didnt tech(on a real match with a good player he will probably do it,but this is hypotetical) and he rolls, put a car battery in the form of a knee in his face.

there are soooooo many situations like these that i cant put them all here, just put the ones that came to my mind when i wrote down this.

THE KNEE ISNT ALL YOU HAVE *****

and im serious, most of the falcon mains are 50% knee 30% mindgames 20% combo status(AKA **** mode)

a good falcon could make his way without a knee with all that sh¡t that falcon has,if you have played smash 64 you know what i mean, uair to no end,nair-ing across stage,****ing wall of bairs for edgeguard,FALCON PAWNCH,god no one uses it at all,all the hype is on the knee recently, yeah, its a good move, but ****ing hell, isnt all you got.

Also, I'd disagree on your percentages. And in reality, if you can combo and mindgame like a mofo, you don't need the knee, despite Falcon's motto.

I basically agree with just about everything here. It's essentially all the things that are left unsaid for falcon players who aren't scrubs but aren't really quite there yet to being tourney worthy.

short, sweet, and straightforward *thumbs up*

I was going to quit Falcon and main Fox, because I was repetative with him. But this thread made me think about what I'm missing out on my Falcon, could be sexier? could be raper? etc . . .

time spent not kneeing is time that would be better spent kneeing.
