There are currently thirteen role-playing games (fifteen if you count the two GCN RPGs) bearing the Pokémon name. I've been thinking a lot about the games recently, and have come to a conclusion:

Either

A) The series will come to an eventual standstill due to lack of innovation
or
B) The games will become real-time, establishing a new generation of Pokémongaming.

While a real-time game is a far cry from the current series, the day will come when there are no more remakes to be released, and you will turn on your handheld and see Shuckle battling Pidgeot with simulated speed.

Do you think this is bunk or not?

Random encounters? I would prefer a Tales-of-Symphonia-esque enemy encounter system. In case you don't know it, it centers around the use of amorphous blobs to represent groups of enemies. If you run into a blob, a battle starts. It's far less jarring than trying to run through fields and being interrupted randomly, like in that space-pirate-ninja game.

Ah, ToS. Sounds like a good idea, but isn't that really what Pokemon is now? Well, it's more of an FF style, but similar nonetheless.

An MMO would require enemies scattered about and attacking you, similar to World of Warcraft or FFXII.

Hm...If they did scatter enemies around as such, there would be issues. They would have to interpret scale correctly, which they haven't really done in the handheld RPGs. Plus, they couldn't have floating Water-types, and, for that matter, it would be hard to avoid showing Diglett's torso. It seems feasible, but, considering the "effort" that they've put into Battle Revolution, I'm not so sure they will.

I'm for them either spending a considerable amount of time making the next pokemon game feel like an actual full fledged RPG (with a more engrossing story that's actually epic) and not a rehash of Red/Blue with an evil organization (Team Galactic, I know your just the same as Team Rocket with a new name).

I'm only arguing about the single player game - the actual battling I think has been moving in a good direction.

They need to either give us an epic RPG on a FF or Dragonquest scale or give us something like an MMO. The story shouldn't be something I have to struggle through so that I can get enough badges to actually do what I want.

"Epic" isn't quite what I'm hoping for in a real-time game based on the series. To make the game more epic is, in part, making it longer. That would mean spreading out the individual monsters even more than they already are, and there are only so many that they can produce. The best part of the games (in my much-disputed opinion) is the number of different ways to play available from the beginning. I don't have to wait to add party members one at a time; I want to be able to have any combinations I want.

I haven't played Pokemon since Crystal, and the reason why I lost my interest is because the series started to repeat itself and lacking depth. Beating the game was incredibly easy with one pokemon and at the end there was nothing rewarding to do.

Pokemon MMORPG would be awesome. I would immediately become a trainer again.

That's another thing. In-game, when your last Pokémon faints, you "white out". Which is completely ridiculous. They would need to change that for an MMO so that a Trainer whose monsters are defeated doesn't just faint, disappear, and reappear in front of a respa-er, Pokémon center.

This would be such an amazing idea, however the game would end up more like the anime, where somehow a Pikachu can defeat an Onix with Thunderbolt. This would be great as long as it retains most of the core strategical value of Pokemon.

I hope that day comes ,recently the play style of the recent pokemon game have been very much the same, just with a little teaks here or there but nothing to be surprised of ,sure wi-fi is ok tag team is sweet but the battle system is the same ,a real time pokemon game is just what the series needs

Nah, Ash's Pikachu was already lvl 100 by his 1st Kanto badge.

He was just hiding it all to make the "rock-hard" guy feel better.

But yeah, that is a pretty awesome idea. If a "Create your Character" option is present, heck yes!

The idea of a Pokemon MMO has been a popular one for quite some time now, and I must admit, I would play the hell out of that game. It is practically begging to be made, but the question is: Will Nintendo actually care? XD

Although it would be extremely hard to pull off. nintendo should consider creating a game where you design your own pokemon, that would be revolutionary and would revitalize pokemon.

I think that would kind of change everything a litttle too much. I love the idea of an MMORPG, but it needs to stay true to the franchise's history. Now, if only some Japanese Nintendo bigwig knew fluent online English (MMORPG isn't something you're going to learn in an English class) and actually read this thread . . .

Oh, I don't think that's necessarily true- look at Mario Party. It died. They stopped. It came to a close at some point- and they made the excellent MPDS. I can't say that I have any objection to the current series, but, as has been said many, many times before, it's really the same game over and over, for the most part.

I never played through all of Tales of Symphonia, but I think that the shadowy blobs and scorpions could be easily replaced by the simplistic avatars from the GSC generation. [/Omanyte]

Firstly, the next Pokemon needs to have a complete graphics overhaul -- no more viewing from above. It should be third-person and fully 3D rendered -- either on DS or Wii (or both). Character creation is a definite, from gender to age, to height, weight; skin, hair, and eye color, etc, etc. The world that it is based in should be all four: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh (and any other new land). All 493 Pokemon (plus a few extras perhaps, at least 7 to bump it to a clean 500 -- which would be reminiscent of the 5th generation) should be present and able to catch. No two versions, but rather just one game. If this is for Wii, nobody is going to pay $100 to buy two versions in order to catch all 493 (or however many would be present).

Pokemon should come in a great variety, as slightly touched upon in D/P with the gender differences in appearance. There should be quite a number of different "skins" that each Pokemon may come in. For instance: the normal pikachu has three brown stripes on its back, but perhaps an alternate Pikachu might have a cluster of brown spots, or no brown markings at all. Also, the hue of the skin/fur of the Pokemon may change slightly, with shiny Pokemon having a slight, shining sheen to indicate that they are shiny. Also, Pokemon should come in different sizes - in a general range of its average size (both height and weight may differ between individuals of the same species). When breeding Pokemon, the resulting may (if at all possible) adapt appearances from both of its parents. So for instance, if a Pikachu and a Marrill mated, they might produce a green-skinned offspring (or yellow or blue, like their parents) that may either be a slimmed down Marril, or a fattened Pikachu. It would be a matter of adjusting the levels of certain settings that all Pokemon are programmed with.

If this could be pulled off, it may very well go down as the best Pokemon game ever.

I like pretty much every idea that you've presented, and, may I add, there needs to be some difference in the battle style of different-sized creatures.

Also, what would Frenzy Plant look like? I've never been clear about what it is.
Definitely. Different sizes may yield different natural abilities. I do not think that all members of one species should have the same abilities, but it should differ (an ability for example: Pressure -- which causes the foe to use two PP instead of one each time it uses a move). But more so about the battle style. I think one factor that should be implemented into each Pokemon is their mood. We have all seen the mood present in the past few games (calm, naive, etc), but it has never had a profound effect. I think this time around, the nature of the Pokemon should directly influence how it fights. And more so, the nature of the Pokemon would most likely change depending on the size (a small Pokemon would most likely be more cautious, while a large Pokemon would not care as much, knowing that not much would actually be a threat to it) and would furthermore affect the way the Pokemon acts on the field and in battle -- in response to other Pokemon and to people. Some Pokemon may try to flee battle if they are too frightened, or they may just cower, not knowing what else to do. Intellect (or more so intuition) should also play an important factor in the behavior of Pokemon. Each species of Pokemon should have their own general intuition, but of course it would vary between individuals of the species. To act intuitively, or instinctively is to act naturally -- to do what one feels is right. This may be a very difficult factor to sort out and fit in to the lifestyles of each Pokemon, but if executed correctly, it could prove to simulate realistic animals -- but with Pokemon.

This brings up something else. Would every living creature in the game be a target? Would there be chattering blue jays and cardinals, or would formations of Taillow and Pidgey sail through the skies, just asking to get Shock Waved? Would Diglett be invincibly quick unless encountered from behind? (Diglett move at over 1000 feet per second on retreat.)

In the world of Pokemon (which is a very bizarre world at that) there are people and there are Pokemon. That's just about it. I cannot recall ever seeing real-world animals in the Pokemon world at all. So yes, there would be Pidgeys, Taillows, Spearows, etc. flying around. As for Diglett... some of the Pokemon are pretty broken. They may have to bend the nature of some Pokemon to make them a bit more convincing -- and that also goes for the basic appearance. Diglett by far is probably one of the strangest Pokemon that has ever been created (not to mention the most basic in appearance). No one has ever seen its bottom half, so... how exactly does it get around? For all we know, it could have a thousand tendrils that it never exposes -- or a hundred mechanical claws. Who knows? Although I am not suggesting that they reveal such wonders as the bottom half of Diglett and Dugtrio, I do think they should balance out the nature of some Pokemon to match a more realistic feel.

As for wild Pokemon, I think they should interact with one another in real-time. Perhaps you'll stumble on to a Hypno duking it out with a Snubull deep in some woods. And then, by interfering with the battle, they may decide to team up on you, or one may side with you - seeing you as a means of support. This may also be measured by the actions that you take throughout the course of the game (similar to the Light/Dark side feature in Knights of the Old Republic, except this would be a bit more invisible -- meaning that the player should know whether or not they do something good or bad through both the direct actions that they take and how others react to them). For example, if you neglect your Pokemon, people and/or other Pokemon may automatically pick up on that through 'vibes' and avoid you, scold you, or even attack you.

Ive discussed this with my friends before. This would certainly be the most amazing thing ever.

i'd say all 4 current zones (Orre doesnt count) would be used, theyre big enough.

All Pokemon could be captured. (Except legendaries, they would be the Warlocks of Poke-RPG if they were catchable...)

THis would be AMAZING.

I say we, of the Pokecenter petition to Nintendo to make something this great, SOMEONE would want to make it...

Definitely agree about the legendaries. I always found it a bit upsetting that you could find a legendary Pokemon and capture it and it would forever be yours. Come on. It defeats the purpose of "legendary". How is it that no other trainer in the entire world has ever caught it, but you just so happen to do so? A great example of the power that a legendary should have in this game is Mewtwo. He utterly destroyed the lab that he was created in - taking the lives of all of the scientists experimented on him. But of course... in the game, you can master ball him two seconds into the battle and he's yours. In this game, he should be a threat to both your Pokemon and you. Dialga and Palkia are also great examples of how ridiculous the "legendary" title really is. They are the essense of Time and Space, and have been seen releasing immense power that could destroy any human entirely. Also - Darkrai and Cresselia are just chilling on their own two stupid little islands for all of eternity until someone comes to capture them. Terrible writing there. I liked how Entei, Raikou, and Suicune (and later Latias and Latios) traveled all over the place. They were actually active. Anyways, I'll put an end of this legendary rant (pun intended).

Yeah, I think that It would be cool to have all four regions combined, real time, with no new pokemon. The whole "Wow! There are suddenly new pokemon and new legends that no one has heard about before!" thing is really getting tiring. What they need is a new kind of storyline, and a new type of battle style, or it's just going to end up like the mario party series... boring and repetitive.

What's wrong with the story?

I will admit it's not as exciting or epic as it maybe could be, but what exactly are you supposed to do? Fight off evil people who have real weapons using your Pokemon? Make it Fire Emblem-esque, where your Pokemon can get killed by being sliced in half and stay dead? It pretty much HAS to have an evil organization. Your character is supposed to be, what, 10 years old? You can't be fighting off people with actual weapons. If you have a suggestion for the story, I'm all ears, but I can't think of much else to put in.

What they should do is stop changing everything around. No Team Magma/Aqua/Galactic, just Team Rocket. Stop creating all of these new, expanse worlds and give us some renewing of the old worlds. Gold/Silver/Crystal was one of the best games, I think, and part of that was because it was so expansive, there was so much to do. That was because once you finished Johto, you went back to Kanto; a remade Kanto.

Stop making so many new Pokemon every generation; the more Pokemon they make every generation, the more Pokemon there will be sooner. Once they end up with 1000 Pokemon, they aren't going to be able to add very many more. Since they (and everyone else) seem to have this idea in their head that if we get a new REAL game, we need new Pokemon, they're going to have to end them right then and there. They at least need to add only a certain amount of Pokemon each time, because with 100 more each gen, it won't take much longer to get to 1000.

Also, maybe it's just me, but does everyone else want the series to move in a completely different direction and change completely every generation? I really would be fine if the games stayed on the same track for at least two generations. I'm sure that's why they stopped revisiting the old regions in the newer games. Nintendo's whole philosophy now is to make everything new and different, and that's the same kind of idiocy that sent Sonic right from the highest mountains down into the freakin' gutters.

I think that if they keep up like this, the series is eventually going to hit a wall and the series is going to either turn into what the Sonic games are now or just end completely. Or maybe we'll get tons of Mystery Dungeon/Ranger games. With games like PBR for consoles.

Yeah, I think that It would be cool to have all four regions combined, real time, with no new pokemon. The whole "Wow! Oh, you did NOT just compare Pokemon to Mario Party!

Seriously, Mario Party doesn't even COMPARE to Pokemon. At all.

^^^the whole evil orginization thing is being far to overused its always the same thing you meet an orginization fight them in a building (R/B/Y=the one in saffron, G/S/C= dont remember but there was one, R/S/E= aqua hideout and magma hideout, D/P= eterna building)then once you reach there you fight either the admin or the leader and chase them off.

Then you continue chasing them until you find out that they succeded in there plan but it somehow gets curropted (this is for the last 2 games and the 2 originals also followed a similar pattern).

As I said before, if you have any other suggestions of a bad guy for the Pokemon games, I'm all ears, but I can't think of a good one other than an organization that uses Pokemon to fight.

RBY = Pokemon Tower in Lavender, Rocket Hideout in Celadon, finally Silph Co. in Saffron
GSC = Slowpoke Well in Azalea, Hideout in Mahogany, Radio Tower in Goldenrod
RSE = Oceanic Museum in Slateport, Mt. Chimney, Weather Institute, Mt. Pyre, Hideout in Lilycove, Seafloor Cavern (Jeez, did anyone realize there were so many encounters with Team Magma/Aqua before this?)
DP = Valley Windworks, Team Galactic Building in Eterna, the Lake Encounters, Galactic HQ in Veilstone, Mt. Coronet/Spear Pillar

It's completely random. It's not just one or two, nor is it always in a building (there always happens to be a building but that's not at a defined point in the storyline).

Plus, you have the two Gamecube games. If you're just going by handheld games, you've got those games which are rather similar, but if you're going by all of the games, you have Colosseum and XD to count as well. Completely different type of organization. The big boss is the final boss of the game. (That's at least true for Colosseum, don't own XD yet so I don't know for sure)

I will admit they could use to mix it up a little bit, such as not having the same "ZOMG LEGENDARY POKEMON COME TO ME!! NO WAIT DON'T DESTROY THE EARTH!!!" as the last two generations did, but unless you have any bright ideas, the evil organizations are here to stay.

Plus, there are games like Zelda that are always: Collect three of something! Then something happens and you have to collect something else! Once you do this you enter Ganon's Tower, and then you fight Ganon!
Oh, forgot the occasional collecting something a third time in there.

If you make the argument that Pokemon needs to change, then Zelda really needs to change because it's had the same formula since the early days, and has had more variety in the titles than Pokemon (meaning not a bunch of different versions of the games).

They should bring back Team Rocket, in my opinion.

Hoorah for Zelda reform! I'm a diehard Zelda fan, but that series needs major changing. I've posted extensively in the Zelda thread over on the Lighthouse board.

I would type more right now, but I have to get to work on something. Anyways, Team Rocket needs to return because Team Rocket played the largest, and most original role both in the games and the TV series, AND they even had an entire set of Pokemon cards. Plus, all of the other organizations are just Team Rocket clones anyway. Team Rocket needs to return in the 5th generation.

^They probobly will, because they have to return to the mainland for the next game.

Anyway as for the MMO, I think that will be gen8 after they done all the regions and released all the pokemon, so they can make sure everything is balanced out in a game with a main storyline of about 140+ hours.

I don't want a Pokemon MMORPG for a simple reason. While it would be very interesting to battle like in the anime, I prefer Pokemon over a lot of competitive games (I'm talking about online) because it is affected by things like lag, possibly harming skill. In Pokemon online, you have time to think out your moves, and no way to john about lag screwing you up. I don't want to have to sit up right, shaking a nunchuck trying to use Thundershock.

I'd rather have what Youko said. A Pokemon game that you can play in 3D and 2D. Basically, you buy this set for $100 or so, and it comes with a DS Version of it and a Wii Version of it (Or the current system out). You can start the game on either system, as they are both the same game. You start it on the Wii, and when you need to go somewhere, transfer the data to the DS Version. You can then play EXACTLY where you were, but it is 2D. It needs to cover all 4 Regions and have all the Gyms, Elite Four Trainers, Battle Frontier, and such that made it popular. Tell me this isn't better than an RPG.

Oh, and Diamond and Pearl needs Team Double Battles.
