The Final Five DLC Characters

Predictions:
Based off Rex being too recent to be in the base roster or as DLC, it is likely that all DLC characters were decided before Rex was well known. Likely in 2016.
I therefore assume DLC were planned long ago. So, if you knew who your DLC fighters are going to be, it wouldnt make much sense to include them in the base game in another form.
No one seen as a spirit or AT is DLC. Sorry, Geno, Shantae, Skull Kid, etc. (And Geno believers - yes he was just seen as a Smash tag. But he's likely only selectable as a Smash tag because he's a spirit)
With that out of the way, I will now eliminate characters who were not as popular in 2015/2016, during the Ballot. This means Crash, Doomguy, Solaire, etc., who have all just seen a massive spurt in popularity only recently with Nintendo players, are likely out.
Additionally, I strongly doubt any future characters, such as a FE Three Houses or Pokemon Gen 8 rep, will be in the DLC, for the same reason why Rex couldnt make it in - DLC was planned long ago.
This leaves me to guess the following few are the most likely...
Banjo-Kazooie
Steve
Sora
Lloyd
Elma (if she survives the Spirit purge)
- There is a suspicious lack of XC X music in the game (we were able to see all Xenoblade music during the direct)
Bandana Dee (if he survives the Spirit purge) - my gut still feels this wouldnt be hypeworthy enough to be paid DLC though; this is admittedly the least reasoned out statement in this post.
And of course, there is always the likely possibility Sakurai surprises us all with his next character pick. He's more than capable of that as we've learned with every game in the series.

Who I think, not who I necessarily want (though I do like some of them):
1) Sora - Because Vergeben says SE Rep, and because other leakers have backed him
2) Steve - Also Vergeben, Minecraft wasn’t in base, so character seems likely now
3) Banjo-Kazooie - I don’t think 2 Microsoft reps is crazy based on their buddy buddy relationship. They’ve been getting promoted lately, even in Minecraft on the Switch
4) Rayman - Because of Ubisoft’s relationship with Nintendo now. Just seems like they deserve a rep, and Rayman seems like the obvious choice
5) Doomguy - Since Bethesda has been in talks with Nintendo about Smash, and Doom is their big classic IP

Well, when it comes to determining what can or cannot be a character, let's look at what we know based on what each game gave us:
(Because of the length, I'll be put this all into a spoiler for a cleaner, healthier thread)
So, you survived my late night mental thesis? That makes one of us, so...here are my generalities for the upcoming DLC, largely in no particular order:
1. Piranha Plant (It's a Limited Time Free DLC deal until early 2019)
2. Metroid Prime 4 Representative.
3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses Representative.
4. Third Party Character
5. Third Party Character
6. Upcoming First-Party Character. (I, uh...don't really know what's coming out 2019...)
7. Ray-01 or Ray MKlll...you all saw that coming.
If we're to receive a Season Two (or more) for DLC fighters, we could possibly get some sort of Ballotthat may or may not actually mean anything. If we did, I could see the Season Two involving one or two fan picks, with the other three being up-coming, third parties, or something entirely random.

- Nintendo's All-Stars...and Jigglypuff.
- Characters who are not specific individuals (Pikachu, Jigglypuff...No, its not Ash's Pikachu and No, it's not the Jigglypuff from the anime).

- Characters from 'one-off' or 'dead' franchises (Ice Climbers)

- Introduced us to the prospect of DLC (The returning vets, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta).
- Introduced us to the prospect of DLC characters being Third-Party (Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta).
- Introduced us to the prospect of a character without a prior appearance on a Nintendo Console (Cloud).
- Introduced Avatar characters (Mii Fighters. Technically Robin and Corrin but you can't truly customize them.)
- Introduced us to the-unnamed Echo Fighters (Lucina, Dark Pit.)
- Introduced us to Palette-Swap characters (Alph, Koopalings).

Smash Ultimate:
...Has introduced nothing new. Yeah. Really. All of the characters returning or revealed can be matched to any of the above.
Yes. Even Piranha Plant. Its no different from Pikachu in this regard. Pikachu is a species, not an individual. Pikachu is also an individual of the species, but the Pikachu in Smash is not any known individual within the franchise outside of being 'The Smash Pikachu'. Likewise, Pirahna Plant is not any known Piranha Plant...it is simply the Smash Piranha Plant.
Looking at the above, the circumstances point to only one thing:
"A character entering Smash, unless proven otherwise in the future, must feature an origin pertinent to video games. If they are not from a video game proper, then they are from Nintendo's history in the field of video games itself."
So...what we know at this point is that any video game character can appear so long as they are from a video game or, if not, are related expressly to Nintendo's video game history. We don't know if a Spirit (which there are some based on already playable fighters), Mii Costume (of which some are based on playable fighters), or Assist Trophy rules anyone out as we have no evidence for or against such notions...So...uh...the options are too vast to pinpoint exact characters without making it look like a wishlist.
But, with the current Nintendo President stating that they want more First-Party games and more DLC, and the Nintendo Switch still early on in its Life Cycle, and know that Smash Ultimate will be picked up and played for a long period of time, this means that:
1. It is possible that we will get more than five DLC characters, and that this is just the beginning of what they may want. Think of it as Season Pass One.
2. These characters may be relevant to upcoming First and Third Party games. They do not have to come out before their own game releases worldwide (Corrin).
3. A DLC character cannot be an echo...unless, potentially, they are an echo of the main DLC character? (Unknown.)
4. There is the potential for communal votes.
and, to repeat:

Well, seeing all the characters that lost their oportunity being Assist Trophies, i'd like to talk about thr ATs that appeared in the 2 previous games, and were cut for SSBU, i'm talking about Infantry&tanks, Lakitu, Saki Amamiya and Kat&Ana; i think Sakurai decided to cut the pixel ATs, and Tingle is actually a stage Hazard in Great Bay, so, i have a little hope for Saki and Kat&Ana being promoted to playable characters
Based on this, and the popularity of certain characters. I think my 5 dlc list would be like this:
1) Banjo
2)Geno
3)Saki Amamiya
4)Kat & Ana
5) Rayman

I genuinely think we'll get 2-3 third parties with DLC. I've got multiple guesses and it depends on which route is taken and what is done. We have to remember that Sakurai said DLC was decided alongside the roster. I'm going to assume this is the only 'wave' we'll get, but if not, that'd be awesome and I'd be excited to see what Sakurai chooses to do and bring us.
I'm picking 5 for: Highly Likely, Likely, Not Likely but possible.
Highly Likely:
-Geno (Highly requested, Sakurai wants him in, easy choice.)
-Sora (SquEnix is rumored to have a new rep via DLC, Sora is win-win for all parties involved.)
-Bandana Waddle Dee (Extremely popular among both Eastern and Western regions.)
-Dixie Kong (Completes the four icons of the Donkey Kong Country games and would do her more justice than Echoing Diddy.)
-Tails (Odd that Sonic didn't get an Echo despite being the most iconic third party barring Pac-Man represented and Simon/Ryu receiving an Echo before him. Tails is the second mascot to Sonic the Hedgehog tbh, and would bring a lot of revenue for both Nintendo and Sega.)
Likely:
-Banjo & Kazooie (Highly demanded since Melee days and with Microsoft and Nintendo being all buddy-buddy, I find it likely.)
-Chorus Kids (Cut from Sm4sh but originates from one of Nintendo's very popular series and would be extremely popular with the Eastern side of the world.)
-Elma (Rex/Pyra are out of the question and seeing the success of the series makes Elma a likely candidate for DLC.)
-Rayman (Ubisoft would be crazy to not want Rayman playable, and I could definitely see Sakurai choosing him due to demand and the hype it would generate.)
-Steve (This is only likely due to Vergeben being 100% accurate with Ultimate thus far. If Minecraft content in some form is in, it's likely Steve as DLC at this point.)
Not Likely, but possible:
-Isaac (Only if Assists can be promoted to playable in the same game. Same goes for Skull Kid.)
-Skull Kid (DLC/Roster was decided when Majora's Mask on 3DS was released and it would quell the want for a new LoZ rep.)
-Gen 3 Pokemon (Tbh seems like a possibility considering we got Piranha Plant which brings the Mario characters to 9 not including Wario and Yoshi. With OR/AS being the new games at the time, I could see Sakurai wanting to go for one but ultimately going with Incineroar for base roster.)
-Dragonborn/Doomguy (Bethesda is playing ball now, and these two are absolute icons and would be ****ing hype as hell. Not as likely as others imo though.)

Ok I think we know that while development hasn't started, the character's have been planned and negotiations have happened already. And since Bethesda have met with Nintendo about Smash, either Dohvakiin or Doomguy are a lock. Well if the Grinch leak is fake, Ken's pose on the mural is confusing me to no end, as are Isaac and Shadow being assist trophies.
Though as they've already said DLC may only stop in 2020, I doubt we'll get season 2.

In no particular order I think this is a likely outcome.
I really don't think spirits or AT's are gonna be fighters since DLC was planned from the start.
Bandana Dee is the most requested first party not in the game in any form yet, he could easily have a stage from a newer Kirby title and a plethora of music.

Tap Trial Girl is an interesting one but I feel confident, Rhythm Heaven is still unrepresented and she is the only major character which hasn't appeared as a spirit. I feel this is a sign that she may be the character represented.
Elma makes sense to me, we don't have any music from X and that could easily be added through DLC and plus Rex and Pyra are out of the question now.
I am starting to trust Vergeben now, a SE rep seems likely and since Geno is a spirit I think Sora makes sense as a huge selling point. Kingdom Hearts is very popular and I do believe Sakurai would go through the effort for him to be included in the game. If Sora can't happen due to Square Enix being annoying, Rayman would be my other choice.

In no particular order I think this is a likely outcome.
I really don't think spirits or AT's are gonna be fighters since DLC was planned from the start.
Bandana Dee is the most requested first party not in the game in any form yet, he could easily have a stage from a newer Kirby title and a plethora of music.

Based purely on the fact that I believe that all five will be released separately, I think it'll be like this:
1) Banjo
I think Microsoft is down to clown with Nintendo on Smash, but they'll want a cut. I'm almost certain that they will show up in Ultimate, but it'd be easier to segregate the funds this way, purely by having a share of the DLC profits.
As for the stage, most people think Spiral Mountain, but as cool as that place is, I think it's less likely than somewhere like Mumbo's Mountain/Treasure Trove Cove/Grunty's Lair. Those three locations have a bit more personality to them. Personally I'd probably pick TTC. I have a concept for it in my head, even though my submission for the B-K round of the Stage Contest was Click Clock Wood.
2) Ray Man
I'm basically taking Rabbid Peach's Spirit inclusion as a soft confirmation, here. Ubisoft has been very friendly lately with Nintendo and I think they know there's enough interest for this to be a thing. Also, similar reasons as above. Since there isn't an already existing Ubisoft character in the game, it makes more sense to throw them in as DLC.
I'll be real with you- I only played Rayman Legends. None of the others. As such, I'd probably pick one of those Greek worlds.
3) Edelgard (Fire Emblem Three Houses)
I understand that Sakurai is wary at this point of adding additional Fire Emblem characters, so to appease people who would rather not have extras, he's making one of them an optional DLC character instead, so only the people who'd want her will download her. Even if you get the fighter pass, you don't have to download them. I believe Three Houses is going to do gangbusters and Nintendo probably does too. I also doubt that all five DLC characters will be 3rd Party, and this is one that makes sense from a 1st party perspective. I believe Rex/Pyra will be in the next game rather than DLC for this one, since he is trying to appease fans with the mii costume for Rex.
Don't know enough about this game to pick a stage.

Okay, this is partially wish fulfillment. But now that he's cool with adding fighting game characters, let's add one of the most gaming-significant series of all time into the game. As far as total gaming landscape goes, Mortal Kombat is MUCH more influential and well known than Street Fighter, and especially Tekken, has ever been. Hell, it's the reason we have a game rating scale to begin with. And despite not being the main character, Sub-Zero is definitely one of the most well known, alongside Scorpion (Who is probably a little too mature for Smash though would still be a ton of fun). But also Ice Climbers/Lucas are bad at being ice-based characters and Sub-Zero can fix that.
Lin Kuei Palace/Temple. That would be awesome. It's kind of Sub Zero's home and it'd be a good addition for Smash.
5) Hades (Kid Icarus)
Sakurai bias is OP, and Hades is certainly an EPIC character to finish this bout of DLC with. He'd be amazing as a final entrant into this Ultimate Smash Bros.

The initial fighter pack will run through 2020. We'll probably see a pack every 2-3 months.
So it doesn't confirm nor deconfirm the possibility of a second wave of DLC, I'm sure it'll happen though. Nintendo can milk tf out of Ultimate because it's one of their best sellers. Anything they do with it, the fans will still eat it up. Brawl is considered a failure among many, and it was still one of the Wii's best sellers and was overall rated highly.

im so disappointed i dont give a damn any more. especially if these are the last 5 characters in the game, i have 0 hope for anything good. Honestly there better be more than 5 more characters passed this fighter pack.

Important distinction is that he's still claiming Square character + Minecraft content, but says Steve, Dragon Quest, and Katalina are still predictions of Hitagi and he can't confirm them himself.

1) Slime. I'd bet Square pulled some strings to make it happen. My guess is Sakurai approached them over Geno, but they vetoed him in favor of Slime and we'll be seeing him soon. Super popular in Japan, so he's got that going for him. It's mostly just that leakers are talking about a Dragon Quest character, though.
2) Bandana Waddle Dee. I honestly had him pegged for base roster. The dude is an absolute force in Japan, has good popularity around the world, and is a relevant character. I know characters like K. Rool go against the grain with relevancy, but I do still think it matters. I mean, Look at half the Pokemon on the roster. Anyway, i think BWD is in.
3) Steve. I'm with most people in not really wanting him, but i can't deny that he'd be a unique addition, and a huge draw for a lot of non smash fans. If Microsoft is getting a character in, I don't think Banjo would be a priority, unfortunately.
4) Edelgard. Speaking of things I'd rather not see, I can't imagine a Smash game without a new Fire Emblem character. And no, I don't think Chrom quite counts. Given what we know about Corrin's inclusion, I'd say Intelligent Systems kinda does the GameFreak thing: basically yell at Sakurai until he puts one of their new characters in. I think he'll choose Edelgard, as she seems to have a prominent role in the new game, as well as an affinity for axes. This way, nobody can complain about anime swordsmen.
5) That character from the Japanese mobile gacha game. Idk man, it's what the reliable leakers seem to be saying, and I can't really doubt them about it. If westerners can get Ridley, then easterners can get their Granblue Fantasy character. Eye for an eye, I guess.

Also, he's mario. Everybody knows him, Smash fan or not. His paper form is something totally unique, though, and I think the legacy of his games is easily grounds for an inclusion.
3) Porky. Dude, I just think the spider mech would be cool.
4) Funky Kong. Not even a DK clone, either. So yeah, this one would never happen, but I just think a big ape with a surfboard would be a fun character to tool around with.
5) Master Chief. I know I'm a dirty sinner for this one, but the original Halo games were my jam, and Chief was my guy by extension. I'm not quite sure what they would do with him, but seeing him in the game--along with Martin O'Donnell's legendary music--would kill me. He may not be the most popular among the Nintendo crowd, but I'd be all over it. Also, imagine peoples' reactions. If they thought Cloud was crazy, Chief would blow everyone away. Total pipe dream, though, so I wouldn't bet on it.

For anyone predicting characters from Switch games, like Rex, Edelgard, and an ARMS rep, your not getting them. The DLC characters were decided all the way back in 2015; these characters were either in the conceptual phase or just didn't exist at that point. If we get more DLC down the line, then they are possible.

1. Square Rep (either Geno, Sora, Agnes, or Slime)
2. Katalina (Granblue Fantasy)
3. Steve (Minecraft)
4. Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X)
5. Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby)
Vergeben/Hitagi are not correct (in no particular order):
1. Square Rep (either Geno, Sora, or Agnes)
2. Tails (Sonic)
3. Banjo-Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie) (*Steve is still a possibility)
4. Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X)
5. Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby)

Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong) (*If spirits aren't deconfirmations)

Depends on when the meeting happened. If it was 2016 or later, it's not happening. If we get more DLC down the line, then it's possible.

Best guess?
1. Rex and Pyra/Mythra (I think the Mii costume is big evidence to the fact that they are working on this. It's almost like they're saying, "Here's this while we finish the real thing."
2. Rayman (This probably started right after the success of Mario+Rabbids.)
3. Geno/Sora (Praying for the former, would be excited for fans of the latter)
4. Banjo/Steve (I could see the former with AT and spirits of the latter.)

I also hope Fire Emblem doesn't get any more reps as it is already over represented. Pokémon has enough too. Mario also has more than enough, but I would make the exception with Geno as his fans have fought for so long to have him playable so they deserve it!
