Australia has intenet censorship? Argh I've been blind,

I'm pretty sure all countries have internet censorship to some degree, they just don't tell anyone :)

The only things that experience Widespread censorship online ~ are CP and GORE (childporn) and even that stuff is easily accessible.

I saw this on another forum and made a huge post, but seriously the ACTA treaty is rediculous, not only is the internet screwed, so are 3rd world countries like Africa. I never knew a single treaty could range from Africa and the internet. and what a flawed treaty it is, whoever developed the treaty obviously didn't consider privacy.

It's not quite the end of the internet, it's just an attempt to stop pirating . . . . . should I feel bad that I think that the crackdown on counterfeiting and piracy sounds good to me? [totally serious btw]

The only thing I found nonsensical about the article displayed on the home page of that site was this:

"One tough remaining issue is the 27-nation EU's demand that the pact cover "geographical indicators," which are names for food and alcoholic products drawn from a particular location, such Champagne or Cognac, both in France.

But U.S. business groups worry that would mean U.S. products as commonplace as Kraft Parmesan cheese could potentially be treated as illegal items under the pact and subject to seizure by customs officials"

That's just bs, because cheese wasn't originally from the US it could be considered illegal? WTF?

If they DO make the internet as censored as China's, we'd most likely start going on strike and ****. This IS a democracy you know, not unlike the semi-communist country that China is, where you get less of a say of what's going on.

ACTA is under the guise of a piracy crackdown. ~ Like Piracy is the most pressing world issue.
If this WERE about piracy ~ then the ACTA treaty and it's negotiations would be made public.

The acta treaty is designed for CENSORSHIP ~ It will basically introduce a kill switch to the internet. - Anything deemed to be "pirate-like" in nature will be immediately removed- Did I mention without trial? ~ Isp's will basically be converted to copyright enforcers. Free media will be even harder to attain as sites like pirate bay, download.com will definitely be infringing on new regulations. Youtube, 4chan ... everything will be infringing. The next step is to shut down sites that publicly speak out against their governments~ Without a trial they could be deemed "pirating" sites.

Tell me that random 1/10 searches at airports for things like ipods and laptops is necessary.
This treaty is constitutionally offensive in every way.
Cracking down on piracy is a joke... and a bad one at that.

The secrecy surrounding this treaty is enough of an indication that maybe things aren't quite as "democratic" as they may seem. Just a few months ago the southern states turned into communist Russia with ethnics being asked for their "papers" at the will of "law enforcers".
Things are changing.
1984 was just a book ~ not a guide.

It's amazing people only react to such huge measurements, when in fact censorship is commonplace. The reason there haven't been huge protests is that there appears to be openness and freedom.

ACTA is pretty reasonable, dude. I completely understand the desire to stop piracy (although the current business model for the music industry is quite clearly outdated and needs to die), and ACTA is fine. The reason why the talks are secret is so that websites that do facilitate piracy can't find a loophole or start changing how they're run to avoid getting taken down.

Don't get me wrong though - I haven't read the leaked version of the bill. If you can tell me why I should be worried about this, I will be.

Activities that would become illegal under the Bill include:
-circumventing any “digital lock” (e.g. - unlocking a cell phone, viewing DVDs bought overseas);
-making a backup copy of a DVD or CD on disc or on your computer; -transferring a DVD to your iPod;
-distributing any software or equipment that can be used to unlock digital content (e.g. - software that can burn a copy of a "locked" DVD);
-circumventing any lock, even for repair or other legitimate purposes;
-making copyrighted material available to others (e.g. - posting a video on YouTube to which you do not own all the rights, using a song on your website to which you do not own the rights, sharing through peer to peer networks);
-allowing any electronic library materials to be checked out for more than 5 days;
-copying digital materials for research or educational purposes;
-allowing distance education students to keep course materials that contain coyprighted material after the class is finished

these new laws could result in a fine of up to $20,000 per infringement

This was a Canadian bill with similar stipulations that the gov't tried to introduce back in 08 ~ It failed, but conservatives vowed to reintroduce it in the future.

Of course it is, but not only that stuff is censored. I'm talking about potentially important information of governments. They often have unknown agenda's.

I still don't understand why people are getting shocked that the Internet's not going to be free and lawless forever.

Because it breaks basic privacy rights that have been held in place since just about the dawn of computers, and suddenly you're in jail for 5 years because you let your best friend download songs you bought with your own money.

How about no.

If this thing EVER passes, I'm getting a lawyer and getting ready to make the biggest lawsuit in the history of lawsuits against this whole thing.

And win.

Hm, Smashboards is a fairly well-trafficked site and I don't see this thread or site being censored.

But obviously that's just the government mindgaming us. Because if they let us know somebody thought we were being censored then you'd think they'd censor that person so the censoring doesn't become obvious, and yet it doesn't-- *hedasplode*

Dumb treaty is dumb, but most likely not the end of the world as we know it.

Of course it's not surprising considering how stupid ANY government has been in recent years.

It still doesn't mean it should pass like the rest of the stupidity that gets through.

On the plus side if this goes through I'll come out of it richer. >:3

Jeebus, if i ever got too much censorship (Say from these forums)
I'd die from lack of a pastime :urg:
Really, i do nothing more than Eat, Sleep, School, and Smash.
More than 100% is comprised of this game and all it's associations...

Oh wait...

I wish I could say this was relevant.

Utilt Mario^^ ~ if the smashbros. Gods are crazy enough to allow this piece of legislation to pass ~ I can only imagine the kind of legal repercussions that will come after the first short while of it's existence.

I can tell you now that I will be usb-sticking the sheeet out of every Library and school computer that I can get my hands on. ~ Trackers ~ Seeds ~ Pirated Media ~ everything. I'd love to see the isp of a major university ban said university from the internet entirely!

5. Part of the ACTA treaty states that import generic medicine are to be restricted and controlled. This could have disastrous effects that will cost lives, especially in developing countries. The majority of medicinal companies do not supply medicine to third world countries. This is because more profit can be made by selling it to the richer countries where we live. Most medicines received in third world countries are imported by concerned people and charity groups. If ACTA is to be approved, these medicines would be confiscated for "security" reasons (in order to maintain a monopoly). Should these people die because of our current inaction and unwillingness to act against ACTA?

6. If ACTA is implemented, privacy on the internet is no longer a given. Internet Service Providers will be forced to monitor what websites you visit and what you type, search and do. People have a basic right to privacy that this treaty clearly ignores. Are you willing to pay this price?

7. ACTA gives governments and ISP’s the right to block websites deemed “unsuitable” There are no clear guidelines as to what is deemed suitable or unsuitable. Do you honestly believe that this power will not be abused for political and economical gain. China has used the same excuse to censor the internet. Concurrently, China has far banned facebook.com, youtube.com and blogspot.com. Does this seem like national security?

8. This treaty will not prevent piracy. This is an ineffective and ridiculous agreement that will only harm the common people, not the pirated goods trade. Again, China is an example. Most websites and Peer to Peer networks are blocked. Yet China has one of the most rampant piracy industries in the world. Why? Because piracy will always find another medium. Only we will suffer.

the government sometimes has to restrict freedom for protection but what do i care if bubba wants to download some music or if harry wants to see some porn (or something) it doesn't hurt me at all if they do that. it seems to me it's acting for it's own interests rather then the interests of the people

and now for a history lesson in song

With you /b/ro
/b/rothers (and /v/irgins and /tr/ainers, if they're here), if this thing gets even slightly close to passing, we need a plan. Perhaps this format will work best for you

1) Pirate as many things as you can, and be generous in helping fellow channers stockpile their pr0n 'staches (but no CP; that'll just put them (and Chris Hansen) on our case faster)

2) DON THE GUY FAWKES MASKS! CHANT THE 300 AND WARHAMMER QUOTES AND RICK ROLL AND BEL-AIR THEM UNTIL OUR DRILL PIERCES THE HEAVENS!

3) ???????

4) Well, not exactly profit, but this will at least stall them enough until Linux finds a way around the censors.
