The charge time of certain side specials can be reduced using smash inputs.

I didn't see this mentioned in any of the character specific forums by anyone but myself, so I figured I'd mention it here, as well, as it's a helpful trick that applies to multiple characters.

If you start Luigi's Green Missile, Pikachu's Skull Bash, Mii Swordfighter's Airborne Assault, or Mii Brawler's Burning Dropkick with a smash input instead of a tilt, it'll skip a portion of the move's charge time, yielding higher damage on an uncharged attack and allowing you to reach a full charge faster.

It also applies to all of the former two's custom moves, and is especially helpful with the Floating Missile and Heavy Skull Bash customs, the former now charging to the max quickly enough to be a viable offensive option, and the latter having enough power uncharged to function as a quick, practical KO move.

It strangely doesn't work with Ike's Quick Draw, despite it also being a chargeable side special that propels you forward.

I don't believe there's a precedence for this; obviously tilt/smash specials has existed (Samus, a lot of item throw things), but not one that just seems to be punishing people for not 'smashing' the stick.

I don't really get it either. They ought to have just reduced the charge time on the moves in question.

...Maybe it was changed in the Wii U version?

cool discovery. Are there times when you'd want an uncharged side special in high level play?

Ike's Quick Draw probably doesn't have the same feature because he can't be forced to cancel it either into neutral (Green Missile) or into an attack (Skull Bash) after a time limit. Ike can keep the Quick Draw charge phase indefinitely if he wanted.

I'm guessing this is a bug and not intended. As a :4pikachu: main this pleases me.

Interesting. Mii Brawler has a chargeable side B too.

I wonder if this will interact with B-sticking in any kind of appealing way.

This still works in the Wii U version after the most recent patch, so it's presumably intended.
