Judging by the various modes confirmed, it is very likely that unlockables are going to be based on the different things we try. A few examples will probably include the following:

1. Awards given over time
a. Number of KOs
b. Number of Melee matches
c. Number of characters who have beaten Classic/Adventure Mode
d. Online play record

2. Awards given for specific accomplishments
a. Records set in Stadium Mode(Home-Run Contest, Break the Targets, Training Mode, etc.)
b. Beating certain characters in Story Mode(possibly winning with a specific character)
c. Attempting Normal and higher in One-player modes.

There should be better rewards for "Awards given for specific accomplishments" and the accomplishments should actually be challenging, not impossible but challenging. Examples include...

Beating Classic Mode on Hard
Defeating 10 opponents in Cruel Brawl
Obtaining 75% of the trophies
Beating all the BtTs
Beating all the event matches (with good times as well)

I want the game to be challenging. I want to be able to unlock things that other people don't have (yet).

I can definately imagine some difficult accomplishments we have to make. I just hope that whatever hard things are completed will hopefully pay off. I would be really mad if there was something like "Beat Story Mode on Intense without dying" and all Iget awarded with is some lame trophy or sticker.

Without dying? That'd be pretty darn hard. I can see if it was like, Without Continuing, but not dying once during Classic mode on Intense would be...hard.:p that deserves a stage unlocked.

I do love a good challenge. Challenge is the one thing that keeps a game from ever getting stale for me.

I try and beat Classic on one life on Very Hard all the time just for kicks. It would be nice if it were a bit more rewarding though.

Not that I support it, but there is a chance that things will be easier to unlock than they were in Melee. Fact is, the Wii is for people who "don't normally play games" and I doubt Nintendo is going to make a huge release like this only specific to those people who want a difficult game, basically, the hard core crowd. They are going to want this game to sell to everyone and their brother.

They also know that Smash Brothers has replay value, probably more so than any other Nintendo developed series. Because of that, they will probably figure they can account for the hard core gamer, which will value the replay value and play the game for many years, and the casual gamer, who will unlock everything in a week and be done, and maybe play it as a party game.

Haha, all good guesses. However, winning online would not work because some people don't have access to the internet for their Wii. That would be sort of horrible for them. XD

Well while I don't think that there should be HUEG rewards for beating difficult modes, as new players would have to train for many many months to have half a shot at beating it, I think there should be better ones. Not a new character or stage, but maybe an extra of some sort, like a Special Brawl selection screen for 1P.

Also, unlocking things for trophie gets: YES PLZ.

The whole secret trophy thing is still going to be around for sure. There are probably going to be more trophies plus the addition of the stickers. If the lottery isn't around anymore, getting all the trophies/stickers is going to be a living hell.

I hope there is a code to unlock everything right away.
As tempting as that would seem, I would NEVER do that! I love earning all the stuff in games myself the right way the first time around.

It'd be similar to starting with all the items in a Zelda game... just not the same, you know what I mean?

Good ideas, but I think that Online play unlockables would be limited, considering that there are quite a few people without internet for their Wii.

All of them are good but I'm not sure about the online play one.
i agree. what if you do not have an online connection? this would be a real let down for some players who can't get a connetion

edit: my bad, i was on the first page, i didn't see someone already commented on this

Somewhere, most likely existent
While I can see where those of you who want more rewarding things that aren't just trophies for things like beating Classic on Intense or whatever, I don't think it's gonna happen to a huge degree. All the characters, stages, items, those kinds of things, should be accessible as unlockables to the less good players. I'm still struggling to get the last few trophies, and it would completely suck for me if it was something a lot better than a trophy, like a character. It seems like the logical solution would be character costumes or other similar things for the harder feats.

And there shouldn't be any unlockables requiring online. Period. Maybe if you can unlock them alternately, but there are PLENTY of people who have trouble connecting their Wii online, or are unable too. I'm in the "having trouble" category.

You're right. The online play unlockables would be a hassle to get. I thought that online unlockables would be similar to getting the Captain Olimar trophy on Melee, where you have to have Pikmin data. Since the hidden Olimar trophy was in Melee, I thought that something similar would be in Brawl. I hope it doesn't happen though.

Be nice there was a bit more to unlock besides trophies. The online thing though.. would be unfair to many players. What if they are trying to 100% there files (All Trophies/Stickers/Characters/Stages/etc.) and you can't do it because you can't afford the money for the internet? I don't think you can play on Dial-up (maybe you can) but that would be extremely slow.

i agree with most people here. at least a few characters should require more difficult accomplishments. imo unlocking every secret character is the best part in the game. in melee you needed like 2-3 days to get them all. i hope brawl offers a bigger challange in that aspect.

however, i doubt that they will actually do that. since there's a huge target group they want to reach (including children who wouldn't appreciate that) i guess things will kinda stay like they were in melee.

I bet the new thing will be having Galazy data, or SSB64 downloaded from VC.

There's no need for a code to unlock everything right away. You'll be able to download other people's saves online and copy them over with an SD card. WiiSave will have a massive collection of saves in no time if that's what you want.

And I don't see any reason to think the unlocking process will be any different from Melee, just with more stuff to do.

Thankfully that won't happen, but that is awful to say. Takes the fun out of the game.
I agree, but some people don't want to even bother unlocking stuff, some people rather have everything unlocked from the start and begin practicing for tournaments.

why? why would you ruin a great game. What's the point. A game is meant to be played properly without cheating. if we cheated and finished everything instantly what is the point of the game. i would never be a noob and cheat cheaters ruin the game for everybody

Well, I guess if you've already unlocked everything before, then its okay. But I'd say codes like move swapping and giving everyone super moves are always interesting as long as they're for fun.

Hiding in that one place you cant see.
If the person bought the game, then they can pretty much do whatever they want with it. If they want to use a cheat and unlock everything right away, then let them. I would personally try to unlock everything myself without resorting to cheats and codes. The point is, its there money, their game, there was of doing things.

Cheating is only not allowed for competition, but it is always permitted just for fun. If there is a Gameshark for the Wii, then yes there will obviously be cheats. Yes there will probably be cheats that unlock everything, allow bosses to be playable, give unchangable percentage, etc, etc. If anyone wants to unlock everything at one time, fine. The only thing I don't want to hear is someone say"I'm the best SSBB player" when all he/she did was type in a code or two.
