Oh forgot to mention some things about rules:

-Sets were 4 stock as an experiment for Apex because apparently 5 stock takes to long. I personally didn't like it and I think we should do 5 stock for Apex

-We need to fix the counterpick order stuff. Before the first match, you pick characters, then you strike stages. For all subsequent matches in the set you pick stage, then you pick characters. When I asked Nintendude why we couldn't really come up with any reasoning other than that's the way that melee's always done it. I think they should always be done stages, then characters pesonally

-Minor stuff, but we started out with only semi final matches (losers and winners) being bo5, and everything else bo3, but then we realized that people were playing bo5's in winners, then lost and would have been playing bo3 in losers quarters. Didn't seem right so we decided that once you start playing bo5's, all you matches are bo5 from that point on.

But how would you know what to strike if you don't know what characters are being played? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the point of striking was to get rid of the best stage for your opponents character.

Because the point of striking stages is to have the most "balanced" stage for the first game (or rather, since the two most favoring stages will theoretically be striked, the least lopsided of the neutral stages), and that depends on the MU. If you pick stages before characters, how would you be striking? With what you think the first game MU is gonna be in mind? That would be pretty silly.

uh how do i know what character to pick if I don't know which stage we're gonna play on?

I don't honestly care which way we do it, I just think it should be the same order for both striking and counterpicking

Didn't think SK was shameless enough to ever go Kirby. Guess I was wrong.

No offense of course buddy. =]

my thoughts on the rules:

4 stocks is too few. 5 is perfect. nintendude's reasoning was that, on average, melee and brawl matches last 35-45 seconds fewer than 64. so in an attempt to balance the time spent on the games, he thinks a stock should be removed. which is a good theory.

however, at most tournaments, 64 always has less participants. take apex - 300 players for melee and brawl, and 96 for 64. of course you need to have a low number of stocks + time in m/b to make the tourney run smoothly and quickly. but since there are 200 fewer players in 64, it shouldn't really matter. the 64 section is going to take less time than the other two. 45 seconds isn't a big deal.

to be honest, we all know why matches don't get played quickly at apex - everyone is busy playing friendlies with people they see once a year or disappearing to find food or whatever. at least, those are big reasons. not tourney matches taking too long.

additionally, to ensure smoother running at apex, nintendude and chain ace should not be the only ones yelling out matches and finding players. another three or four would be good.

as for stages vs character selection first:

i'm alright with the counterpick system. the first game should be as neutral as possible. so perhaps stages should be struck first and then double blinds called? shrug.

the alternative would be four stocks on dreamland or peach's. think falcon dittos.

and think of that one extra stock on hyrule being the difference when a tornado is involved.

also ban congo, too much camping. or maybe that's just how md/va PLAYS THAT STAGE

I don't see how picking stages first allows for any more neutral of a stage than picking after. Both players still get one strike right?

ban clubba vs nintendude matches, both of them ****ers just camp

maybe they made a pact not to reveal sk's identify, because they're all very quiet about it.

PM always does stage before characters, but they have so many more stages I don't feel like it's realy applicable to 64.
This is incorrect. PM does characters then stage. So does Brawl. It's just a general convention in Smash, the reasoning being that you should know the character matchup before striking (which makes sense imo).

as much as i like poking fun, he has every right to refuse to be photographed

especially since posting said pictures would likely result in crass jokes from people like you (or me) anyway

This pretty much says it all. I honestly didn't even hear anybody ask him for a picture. Plus, I feel like if he really doesn't want his picture posted he has that right to privacy. He looks like any other smash player pretty much. It didn't surprise me to meet him and see who he was.

lol @ people giving me crap for "refusing". It was barely even brought up. Someone mentioned it like once off-hand and yeah I said that because I was in the middle of a game, and the point of what I said was "I'm here for Smash". But if people really wanted to I would have done it. Nobody pursued the subject though.

Anyway I guess it's an incentive to go to a tournament that I go to :troll:

5 stocks takes longer but

our game hits harder

so there's more variance

so you need more stocks

like how in brawl there aren't combos or gimps so 3 is enough

melee 3 stock matches are too up in the air so they do 4

64 4 stock matches are too up in the air so we do 5

This whole problem of match length would be solved if Hyrule was banned.

If Hyrule has to stay then I like 4 stocks.
