I sent a message to a majority of the melee players in texas that said:

Nike 20 said:
Who are the top5 melee players in ____ ? And what do you think is the top 10 melee for texas?
Fill in the blank for a city/region. This was all out of curiosity and is pretty much just opinions from everyone. The feedback, however, was really interesting. A lot of you went into extreme details and critical thinking (Velox, your reply was amazing btw). It became clear that a majority of the scene thinks about this as well and wants to see melee rise up again.

Everyone in Houston and RGV had a different viewpoint of their region, while Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio pretty much had the same people in the same order. Here's what came up:

Dallas
1. Wobbles
2. Darkrain
3/4. Bluezaft/DoH
5. Boomstick
6. Sethlon

San Antonio
1/2. SOS/Caveman
Everyone else up in the air

Austin
1/2. AustinRC/Xelic
3/4. Kal/Jesus Freak
5. Tirno

RGV
1. Axel
2. Shady
3. Pax
4. Vash
5. Broly
6. Defsithe
7. Tsetse
8. Cloud

Houston
1/2. Roy_R/Sideffect
3/4. Oscar/Jake13

Then things get hazy. Mouf, Sybawave, Dawn, and Clueless were all random. Everyone seemed clear of what they believed and didn't make it seem like a "we're all exactly the same" type thing.

As far what you all think is the top 10 in the state, only one person made an entire list of his opinion. Everyone else threw in 5-6 names and said that it could be in any order:

Wobbles
Darkrain
Caveman
AustinRC
Xelic
SOS
Sideffect

And here are tournies that actually had Texas representation (post links to others that I most likely missed and I'll add them to OP):

Allan doesn't post melee results on HOBO threads :/ It would be cool if someone could post them all up.

I thought this was interesting. But remember, this is all OPINIONS from smashers about their own region.

Discuss.

Do Wobbles and DoH still count? They're not in Texas most of the year. This is an interesting list and I'd say fairly accurate, assuming that Xelic and Caveman still play. I thought they stopped. I definitely want to see the Texas Melee scene pick back up again.

Xelic and Caveman both went to Genesis and Final Smash 7. They basically attend stuff in San Antonio, but we've had only a few events this year.

DoH moved back to Dallas yesterday.

I figured DoH was just home for the holidays, but I will let him comment on that. I'm very interested to see how Final Smash 8 turns out. I think that will be a solid representation of things in Texas.

I was just on the EC for a semester. I might move back after I get my degree, but I'm not too sure on that.

Lawllll. I think it's a sadly telling about the quality of Austin's Melee scene that I'm anywhere near mentioning for this list. Besides, Reqy is probably better than me anyways.

Oh, I forgot about Reqy. Yeah, Reqy should probably go above Tirno. Not sure if he should go above JF. The ranking should be:

1. Xelic
2. AustinRC
3. Kal
4. JesusFreak
5. Reqy

I'd say JF go above Reqy because I remember JF having some old, pretty impressive tournament results. In particular, I remember him beating Columbian Falcon and Lee Martin at FS2 (although that may be old enough for it to not really factor). Luckily, no one gives a **** about the difference between 4th and 5th for a city rank. Especially when it only has 6 players.

#1 Darkrain
#2 Arc

Assuming Wobbles is not part of texas seeing as how he has moved back to AZ.

No one else matters mwahahahahahahha!!!!! lol <333333

I think this is a wonderful idea, and would LOVE to begin a series of tournaments in Texas again!

Shouldn't we do it with like, local tournaments? It seems sort of counterintuitive to try and rank Texas smashers based on a national tournament. Why not start with FS7? That was fairly recent, right?

Austinrc, you have let a few victories go to your head. I'm about to come back on the scene.

It's on. ; )

P.S. I am flattered that I am considered top 10 in TX. ; )

My opinion on the top 5 in Houston would be:

1. SideEffect
2. Jake13
3. Oscar
4. Mouf
5. CluelessBTD(you have a lot of potential)

Dear sideeffect Final Destination. That is all <3333!!!! hahaha nah j/k I know that other players are good or have the potential to be good. But most of them have either quit or moved on with a little thing called life. Untill people start beating me in tournament in texas that isnt darkrain well then... :/ Dunno what to say, I'm not trying to be a cocky ***** btw I'm just saying. I was also joking about no one else matters, there are some pretty good players that should be given praise. That is all and much smasher <3.

On another note I guess I would agree with Kal that FS7 was recent enough to start doing the new rankings if enough people wanted to do them. I also dont see my tournament getting that big either probably just end up being a local one *is still looking for a new venue "cries"*. Anyway idk what do you other texas smashers think?

How dare you bring up Final Destination. We all know that was a fluke many a years ago.

In all seriousness, I look forward to playing in the near future, I have only improved, and I don't even have to play to do so.

Beware.

If Texas is serious about getting back into the melee scene I will do my very best to revive it. We have a list which Nike20 has so generously given us. With The top players in each city. So how would we go about doing a ranking? How many points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd? or top 5 maybe? If the players are serious about this then we need more tournament hosts and ALSO we need the best in the cities to stay ACTIVE!!!!! and consistently go to tournaments. I dont care how this gets done but I want it done, Darkrain is here now that should help revive the scene a little just by itself. So seriously Texas lets step our **** up get out there and start ****** again. Lets make the rest of the nation fear us!!!!!!!

Point systems are stupid. With a point system, your ranking has a lot to do with how many tournaments you've entered, and not how good you are.

The best way to rank players is by panel. We get 5-8 players who are "objective" and have them discuss and debate what the power rankings should be. Then, we just "average" their decisions, so-to-speak, and that should be the power ranking.

Also, officially, I think we're only allowed to have state power rankings on this forum. That is, we can't have city rankings.

Kal, you're wrong.

Regardless of how good you are, you need to show up to tournies.

I will speak for myself, I haven't been active lately, but I'm about to show up to all the big tournies.

It's all about placement.

Ranking systems sound pretty good. I think the main issue, though, is events.

Jan23-Steakfest2 might have melee, though it's not confirmed.
Jan30-Monica, the hostess for Phase monthlies in Dallas, said that melee might be a side event.
Feb6-HOBO's have melee at each tourney.
Feb26- El Paso's Raging storm tourney will have melee

The obvious problem is that melee is a side event at all of these tourneys with brawl taking over. Everyone at FS8 can understand what I'm talking about, with only 3 set ups and brawl surrounding us to the point of suffocation.

What we need is monthlies and an occasional major of ONLY melee.

-Dallas:
They make BY FAR the most effort in traveling. It's close enough that Oklahoma would consider making the drive for monthlies and maybeee some more of midwest for majors. It's close enough for Houston, Austin, and SA to travel to. Besides, we owe DoH and Bluezaft since they do care about the scene.

-Austin:
Despite being the center of Texas and the best candidate for major's, there's simply a lack of venue's. Hylian's been trying for over a year now in finding one in brawl with no success, and AustinRC is still in the market for his April tourney.

-Houston:
HOBO's aren't cutting it. Allan clearly wants the game to die.

-San Antonio:
Very convenient for Austin and RGV. This screams monthlies. Kyle is looking around as always to hold events. Another FS6 that's NOT conflicting with HOBO or anything else could get a lot of attendees

Monthlies in 2 out of those 4 cities of JUST melee alternating every few weeks would be great. Dallas and SA seem like good candidates. El Paso and RGV seem unlikely places for everyone to travel to since there's not enough hype and distance Johns.

I see both sides of having a point system and also having 5 to 8 smashers to make a top 10 of Texas and go from there. Maybe we should have a poll and see what the smashers of Texas would like?

Thanks for misunderstanding me completely. Obviously, they're power rankings, which are based on tournament results. And, more obviously, the panel will base their decisions mostly on tournament results. But there are subtleties which a point system can't pick up on, and a point system favors the number of tournament entries a person has, rather than how well he places "overall." Even if you try to fix this by averaging, problems arise.

I'm not at all condoning not entering tournaments and still expecting to place well on the power rankings.

You guys should try and advertise this money match. Maybe hype it up a little for a tournament to increase the number of entrants.
