This is what I think makes fox very hard to beat and he is arguably the best at doing it.

What I'm talking about is alternating between being super-aggro and then playing slow/defensive/patient. So maybe on your first stock you just (smartly) rush in and do aerials in their face and mostly always rush them and pressure them. And then at some point you switch styles and wait for rolls/dodges etc. I guess you can just call this mindgames but idk, I think its more like doing what your opponent doesn't expect. This makes it really hard for the opponent to get a good read on you.

A lot of people already probably do this, but this is just something I like to work on.

Fox is probably the best at using this technique, falco or falcon are probably good at it too in theory, but fox can be so aggressive at times and then you can pull it back easily because he can move around very well.

What are peoples' thoughts on this subject?

I think the term you're looking for is 'adapting'. And the best players use this to win, not with just fox though, hardly.

The difference between your description and adapting is that you don't have these 'styles of play' planned for each stock, you have the 'style of play' ready for any given situation AS you're playing. You need to play more or less aggressive depending on your opponents style.

I would say it does work best with fox though given his vast variety of playstyles.

There is nothing better than forcing your opponent to adapt, because for one, the adaption may make the match harder than it was, and if they don't adapt to a playstyle, you will steam roll them.

Usually, you should something generally to do when you have a sizable lead or are at a sizable disadvantage, if it is close, playing the match ups smart is how you would go about.

what i meant was...you would play one style for a while and then once your opponent adapts to that style you switch up to the other style

you only have to do this against good players though, as super-aggro will beat everyone else
