I finished watching Welcome to the NHK last night. Since I've come down with the flu I kinda just charged ahead with it since I can't sleep a wink anyway.
While I think the animation is still a bit shaky, the Mouse Road arc was ended poorly (it's really abrupt and sudden and doesn't tie everything up - I hear the manga and novel don't have this problem though), and the ending could have been handled a little better too, and the part about Sato hallucinating about his furniture and appliances being able to talk not being properly explained (again, something I hear is not an issue in the manga and novel), I overall think it's one of the best anime I've ever watched.
It's also the anime that will probably leave the biggest lasting impression on me, since it deals with a lot of realistic issues, many of which I have either experienced in the past, am currently dealing with, or am potentially set to deal with considering my ambitions in life (like becoming a game designer).
It's on the more mature side and is really meant for adults, so I wouldn't recommend it to younger people. Not because it has risqué themes (and even then I wouldn't say it has too much, you only see nude characters in three brief scenes or so) or violent themes, but because I frankly don't think anyone who's still in school and hasn't ever had a need to get a job yet and hasn't experienced the struggles that come with that, will be able to relate to what is one of the main themes of the show. So if you are someone who's main idea of anime is simpler things like action, comedy, sex appeal and fan-service, and anything else that screams "escapism", then this show still probably isn't for you, as it is very much a show that binds itself to reality and puts the negative aspects of escapism on blast. The show is also really depressing at points, with a large focus on dark comedy and a constant feeling of "everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and in the worst possible way". So it's difficult to recommend this to someone who is depressed and lonely themselves. On one hand, it could be an eye opener for you, or it could make yourself feel even worse about yourself than before. Overall I'd say if you want a show that's a fantastic psychological drama/dark comedy, then this show is for you, but maybe don't watch just yet if you are currently feeling really down on life as I do feel some people could take this show the wrong way if they are down on themselves too much.
