Lara Croft has appeared on Nintendo many times. She's also extremely iconic in her own right.
She's also not really that out of place sans her guns, her design is colorful and her physique is historically downright cartoony.

And that's the problem. There's no SEGA IP that comes close to matching Sonic the Hedgehog, and Tails is an influential character so I think he warrants a spot a lot more than say, Alex Kidd.

Phantasy Star and Super Monkey Ball are probably the closest bets, but there's no noteworthy characters from the former, and a monkey in a hamster ball isn't feasible as a fighter.
I dunno, I think NiGHTS the character makes plenty of Sega appearances to be important in the scheme of Sega at least

and considering the Sega console games alone, he'd be an icon of the times

Nights ain't all that iconic. Tails is really imo the only solid bet for a second Sega character. He is questionably the most iconic player 2 in gaming after Luigi after all.

If we're talking about big Sega franchises...

Hatsune Miku (kinda) and House of the Dead come to mind.

Really Sega's number 2 best selling franchise that isn't a sports game is... Yakuza.

Now that would be a sight to behold.

"Nights into Dreams was the top-selling game for the Sega Saturn "

That's gotta be something

NiGHTS is probably SEGA's second mascot at this point, but even that doesn't mean much. It's only had two games, one of which is considered a classic

Then you have their more profitable franchises like PSO and Monkey Ball, but those are really more popular for the gameplay itself rather than the characters.

Ai Ai may be tied to one of SEGA's best selling franchises but he isn't a popular character.

Worth noting is that I really don't care for what is considered an acceptable 3rd party inclusion because I find it to be rigid and, more importantly, kinda anti-fun. For example, Sonic getting a second rep not feeling "right" means nothing to me.

That being said, I don't see TWO indie characters happening any time soon. I think it's more likely we'd get the most relevant one to
honour every indie dev in Smash Bros.
If we're talking about big Sega franchises...

Not a SEGA IP nor a character that originated from a video game...
That is a standard I will set FYI. No characters that didn't even come from a game to begin with.

The second would probably be an Atlus character, sad as that is.

Or it would be Hatsune Miku if she was owned by Sega, which she's not.

This just popped up. It's not Smash related, but it's a stream on Saturday that is related to Mario at least. Can anyone translate? I've only got the crappy Google Translate to go on haha.

Seems like it will be a Mario Maker stream of some sort. That "Vs 10,000" part scares me. hahaha
For the 12th anniversary, Game Center will host a challenge in which Arino has to beat 120 levels submitted to him within 120 minutes. It will be hosted on 12/12 Japan time.

Speaking of Yakuza, it could work better than you think. The actual gameplay of Yakuza doesn't involve guns at all, it's all about beating respect into your foes and hitting them with environment objects.

If Snake could plant mines I'm sure that Mario getting clocked with a bicycle isn't too far fetched.

That's all the answer you really need dude. :V I love NiGHTS, but part of the only reason NiGHTS is even remotely recognized is because of his/her (curse you, genderless being) status as "That character that Sonic games reference a lot."

To be fair Lara's actually had main series games on Nintendo consoles. Remember when the previous timeline with two guns (and dual pistols) Lara went trough a bit of a reboot? All three games were on Nintendo consoles.

It was that brief period when it was no longer too expensive to go multiplatform but the console companies themselves hadn't gotten ti in their heads to bribe them into exclusivity. MICROSOFT!

I still find Lara even more out of place than Snake is/was. I'm no Tomb Raider expert though, so shows how much I know I guess.

To be fair to Villager and WFT? Their franchises are some of Nintendo's greatest modern successes so I wouldn't exactly lump them with the Mii Fighter.

Hornet Car is another popular Sega character

Still awaiting the day for a Sega Fighting Game just for the pure insanity
Megamix was already crazy

Imagine Football Manager fighting the Hornet Car

Yeah, because the appearances of Cloud on Nintendo are what got him in

Sonic had his best games on Nintendo as well

The most I expect Smash 4 to have in terms of non-Sonic Sega representation is Mii costumes (see: Virtua Fighter).

I agree.
Sonic Heroes, Secret Rings, The Black Knight, Shadow the Hedgehog are the high point of the Sonic series. :^)
That sarcasm hurts almost as much as Shadow's edge. :V

I swear to god I hate that game so damn much when it's not even worth the anger.

Honest question, has Yakuza ever actually been on a Nintendo console, and if so which ones? And no I'm not bringing up the must have appeared on a Nintendo console rule, I am legitimately curious about this.

Now that sounds like a fun idea, Mario getting clocked with a bicycle is a pretty funny image in my head, plus him getting hit with a bike would e a step down, after all he's had motorcycles thrown at him already.

Didn't you just say that Miis were iconic on the levels of Nintendo's other biggest characters?
They are.

But their games are more popular than they are.

To be fair to Villager and WFT? Their franchises are some of Nintendo's greatest modern successes so I wouldn't exactly lump them with the Mii Fighter.
But Miis are in exactly the same boat.

Hell they sold more than Animal Crossing and Wii Fit combined.

What exactly are you trying to say about Miis?

I grew tired of Miis the moment I realized you couldn't give them blue hair.

You gotta have blue hair.

Well, Generations was one of his greatest games IMO and it's really disappointing it never came to a Nintendo console

I saw your sarcasm. I'm not talking about Icon status or Nintendo Relevance for Lara, just that she'd feel even more out of place than Snake was to me. And no matter what way you shake it, Snake WAS out of place compared to the rest of the roster, even if that's not really a bad thing.

It's all just my own viewpoint though, again, I lack a lot of Tomb Raider knowledge so not my place to really state anything about her as fact. I feel as though there's much better Squeenix choices out there for Smash.

Score 1 for Tomodachi Life for being considerate of that.

Seriously the fact that Miis have not evolved at ALL in terms of customization since they showed up on the Wii in 2006 is so annoying.

There was a Wii version planned in the early stages but they didn't go through with it.

Probably to avoid a watered down console version like what happened with Unleashed.

I still view Lara Croft as a Playstation character, along with Crash and Spiro

All characters that didn't make it into Playstation All Stars

That's what gave birth to Colors actually. Colors was going to be Generations Wii initially.

Which is weird to think about now since Generations itself has Sonic Colors in it. :V

You know, I'm actually surprised people (unintentionally) dismiss Eggman as a potential 2nd Sonic rep, when he's got all the criteria for it.

Fun Fact about Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes, Nintendo actually paid/published it for the Gamecube, so by this Snake really isn't all that out there, since he's had a game published by Nintendo as well as made, technically, since the devs who made it, Silicon Knights, were owned by Nintendo at the time. So adding Snake to Smash was like adding Ice Climbers to Smash in away if you think about, just a small game apart of Nintendo's history, but its still apart of their history, even if it is only a small foot note.

I literally said in that same statement you quoted that I'm not talking about Nintendo Relevance or icon status.

It's not the same obviously but it's still good.

Also I like Heroes, Secret Rings, and Black Knight. Shadow is mediocre but got a lot of the little things right actually.
