PPG does the latter. Which is not good.

As much as I could rant about Teen Titans Go, it was at least trying to be its own thing from the start. The PPG reboot is trying to be a revival, and it just falls flat.

TTG is its own thing but does its best (at least from what I've heard) to **** on the original show from time to time.

After watching two episodes of the PPG reboot. It's not god awful, but it's not good either. It just lacks the charm of the original show. The absence of the original voice actresses being a big part of that.

I'm all for children's shows making light of things like homosexuality and transgender identity to kids, but I feel like if you want to do that, you have to make that a fairly big, central theme of your show (I don't know much about Steven Universe but from what I understand, the whole same-sex relationships thing is a pretty big theme of the show, especially with Ruby & Sapphire). Like, at least have one of the main characters be trans or gay or whatever you want to highlight, and then just write their character around that in a good way.

That's not to say you can't do things like this well in a single episode (I still think that one episode of Sonic X dealt with the issue of special needs pretty well), but it's so much easier to fall into the trap of "just checking an episode box" when a certain theme isn't a properly elaborated on across the show.

I didn't expect the show to be good now it's even worst than I expected.

Shows like these wouldn't survive in the new age of Adventure Time/Steven Universe world of animation where it has more references than a average YT abridged series but it relies on memes and bad and dated pop culture references is where I draw the line.

I said it once, I'll say it again;

I'm glad Ed, Edd n Eddy never got rebooted because it took what was good about it and try to give it that New Age feel it doesn't need to appeal to an audience that doesn't even like the show.

Western Animation is still a massive issue that needs to be looked at and say stop sometimes. When the best animated show on television is a show about a kid and his mentors who are lesbian rocks, maybe it seems I'm getting too old for cartoons because what I like is different from what the mass likes these days.

Espy when Gravity Falls is gone and there's no decent action show on television

I've seen a lot of LGBT people do that as well. It's what happens when they focus on the lesson and only the lesson.


Really, the best way to write them is just make a character.

Then make them LGBT as almost an afterthought.

Then they have personality, goals, etc aren't just "I'm LGBT." They start to become an individual.

A lot of tumblr however does seem to boil something down to simply race, sexuality, etc.

Like they want to be seen as full beings, but they're so quick to divert or take stances based simply and solely as gay/black/lesbian/Asian, etc.

What I meant by "write around that" is just if you want to address it as a theme.

You can have LGBT characters just have that as a characteristic, but then it's not really dealing with it as a theme (such as the struggles of coming out, a pair of characters dealing with the laws against gay marriage, etc), and thus not teaching anyone anything.

That's fine with shows for older audiences, whom already understand this stuff. But most kids don't, so you have to actually have being LGBT as a large theme of their character for the kids to understand it, rather than just have it be a subtle characteristic. If it's just a subtle characteristic, kids won't pick up on it and will learn nothing about it.

For comparison, stuff like homelessness and poverty, in kids shows, are usually not just a characteristic of a character, when they are brought up. They are pretty large themes of the characters and the characters have to be written around it, as kids need to see the actual struggles around being homeless to really empathise with it. Rather than just having a character pop up for a second and say "spare some change?".
