School Days was at least a radical VizNov for the time.
And there isn't anything... that "attrocious" about it.
Just the infamy of the Bad Ends.
Particularly "Nice Boat."

SAO attempted to be a revival of a kind of niche for plots and then just devolved into pandering harem stuff with occasionally breaking the fluff to actually put in plot.

Considering that from experience, the last expansion was utterly terrible, and the next isn't looking that promising either, stay away. There's a reason they stopped sharing their subscriber numbers.

The last content patch was around last June, and it will probably stay with us until next expansion hits in Fall(Which will be 40 bucks mind you, and whatever they're charging for WoD now too if you want to be up to current.) You'll have PLENTY of stuff to do while leveling, sure, but when you get to end game, as far as actual 'new' content is concerned, it's basically a wasteland outside of one raid.

yeah, the power dynamics are... weird like that
it's super duper difficult to get people to run things that are too high to be soloed (exception naturally being blood dks since they're ridiculous lol) but lower than whatever the current cap is
