Completely out of the blue headcanon:
is usually lonely (bar the Luma's).
One day she went to the Smash Universe, asking to be an Assist Trophy. While she got removed from the tournament at the time (Brawl) she was included here due to the "organizers" (Sakurai's cat) finding potential in her.
Meanwhile, accidentally unleashed a huge swarm in Master Hand. The result became known as Master Core.

I still headcanon that after the Subspace story, Samus became that Pikachu's trainer. They go bounty hunting together when not in a Smash tourney.

Pac-Man, Game & Watch, R.O.B. and Duck Hunt Duo are incapable of human speech and instead utilise facial expressions and physical gestures to articulate their thoughts and emotions. Everybody else understands them perfectly.
Donkey Kong and Bowser can speak like human beings, they just choose not to. They sound like they do in their respective gamesand both have incredible singing voices.
Little Mac can speak too. He's just more so the strong, silent type. Doc Louis does all the speaking for him. He's got a strong New York accent and uses a lot of terse phrases and colloquial slang.
Mario, Luigi, Doc and Wario are much the same: they can speak, but they prefer not to, instead letting their expressions and gestures speak on their behalf. Villager, Ness, Olimar, Alph, Mega Man and the Koopalings are the same.
The Pokémon, of course, only speak their names. Lucario and Mewtwo are exceptions and can speak as human beings speak.
Link and Toon Link can't speak and are functionally mute. Zelda and Ganondorf can, of course, and speak Hylian, but both are generally too focused on the battle to say much at all.
While Meta Knight can and does speak, Kirby and Dedede are interesting cases: the noises and squeaks they make are technically speech, though totally idiosyncratic to themselves and distinct to their own alien vocal ranges. Kirby, like a child, is only capable of approximating human speech, though he understands it perfectly well and just isn't used to speaking it; Dedede can speak it, but it sounds incredibly silly and he's very self-conscious of his peculiar vocal style.
To maintain the effect of his speech's airs of flair and mystery, I choose to believe that Marth canonically speaks in the Ancient Akaneian dialect. Robin and Lucina are fascinated by his vocal idiosyncrasies and are only able to speak a smattering of it, in the same way as most people nowadays would be able to interpret only minimal amounts of Ancient Greek and Latin. For the sake of ease, he is able to speak Modern Akaneian as well, though that's only for casual discourse. His manner of speaking is incredibly formal and old-fashioned as a result of his heritage and he always sounds stern and focused, even if he's just reclining and engaging in friendly conversation.
Mii Fighters don't speak. At all. They do have personalities and understand speech, but they don't have anything to say. They exemplify the trope of "show, don't tell".
Despite language barriers, differing dialects, inter-species intermingling and, perhaps, a distinct inability to speak at all, everybody in Smash understands everybody just perfectly. It doesn't matter your species, language, dialect or accent - Smash is an equal opportunities tourney!

My new headcanon for Marth's Lord Roy costume is that Marth stole Lord Roy's clothes while he was in the shower and wasn't able to join the battle as a result of being robbed of his outfit.
