The operative statement is "could go up above." Do you honestly see anyone as being better than M2K right now that isn't PP, Armada, or Mango? Name one that isn't Hungrybox.
No, but I've heard several good arguments for other players being on the cusp of being better than M2K.
I dunno, kicking pretty much everybody's *** and placing 1st in Melee and Brawl in every other event is pretty damn dominant. I'll concede, though: Pre-Armada Mango, Armada, and Golden Era Ken were more dominant overall.
M2K's reign was impressive, but even then (this was back when I followed and did Brawl competitively) Ally was still probably the best. Still, M2K's reign was incredible, and he deserves to be commended for being atop of the game for so long. That is no easy feat, especially with everyone "aiming" for you.
Yeah, and I've read the same damn thing mentioned by said top ranked Brawl players, too. Some of them laugh at how busted their game is. It is a shallower game, mechanically-speaking. Still, top Brawl players aren't dumber or less capable because of this; their skillset simply differs.
I've heard these points from many of the best players in the West Coast (which isn't saying much, considering from what I know, East Coast dominates in Brawl).
To coincide with what I was saying, I'm not saying they are inferior technical players, I'm just saying their game doesn't show their skills, so judging the skills of opposition is kind of hard to do. And even if the best players look as good as the best Melee players, since the game is an inferior game in nearly every aspect, that probably (bit not definitively) means they are a less talented player.
It is a hard thing to grasp how good those players are, compared to Smash 64 and Melee players, many of which play other games competitively and have easy to identify and frequently easy to rate strategical, technical, and mental understanding of competitive gaming in regards to those games and any other competitive games they play. There's also the chance that the messed up competitive gameplay of Brawl goes against player's strengths. One example I can think of in that regard is Bladewise, who looks ridiculously worse and disjointed in Brawl, but in Melee, looks like a world beater. Maybe it's a lack of camping & stalling skills!
Fair point. I forgot about the undefeated streak.
Have you in your competitive career ever lost a 3 on 1 when you are the 3 with no handicap in a competitive match=??? Neither had I until I face Isai a few times, with him using a bottom tier character (the NTSC version of Link). That guy is too good, and that streak is quite frankly literally the definition of unbelievable.
