The Mew in the Lucario movie was a different Mew than in the first movie.

No one was bothered by that.

I see it in the same way. Mewtwo is still a badass. Just a new Mewtwo.

I actually couldn't care less if Mewtwo is a he she or it, as long as Mewtwo gets back into smash somehow.

Pretty sure the only "retcon" is that there's another Mewtwo, which the fact that this Mewtwo isn't the same one from movie 1 and Mewtwo Retruns isn't news in the slightest.

The manga adaptation for the film has something on the order of this dialogue:
Ash: "You're...."
New Mewtwo: "I am Mewtwo."

giving the notion that Ash does remember Mewtwo, and mistook this new one for him (which would have been a fair assumption on his part).

Someone who saw the movie as a special viewing earlier this week stated that the same line of dialogue is present.

Considering Ash encountered Mewtwo twice, and suddenly doesn't even know who or what Mewtwo is, that is pretty good indication it is a new Mewtwo. One that is completely different from the character I grew up with -- one better suited for the marketing agenda Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are driving with X/Y. I get that this was a damned if you do/don't situation for TPC (remember the flak for touching Mewtwo to begin with?), and I know a lot of this plays into the anime and has less to do with Game Freak; but at the end of the day some one is writing off on this decision.

Granted the new forms are nowhere near as cool as the classic form in terms of art design, but still the classic form isn't erased from existence either.

Most people probably don't care about a new female mewtwo (seriously the game should have legendaries with genders)

However, people will care if the old mewtwo is reconned out of existance for a new mewtwo (male or female)

If the movie does say that then yes. Ash does remember Mewtwo.

Technically, he only encountered Old Mewtwo once.
His memory of the first encounter was wiped, meaning Mewtwo Returns is the first time that's he's able to recall such an encounter.

I sincerely doubt that Old Mewtwo is being retconned out of existence.

That would be quite a large chunk of the anime canon taken out.

It's because gender and gender identity matter when it relates to who a character is. If you disagree, there are some nice transgender folks I would like to introduce you too...it is NOT the same character if female, although it may still be a good chracter

We don't know if there are gonna be two Mewtwos in-game in Pokémon X and Y so maybe it can be any Mewtwo you have to transform into the new forms.

Look I'm not going to sit here all night and debate whether this new Mewtwo is a retcon or clone, so I'm just going to get back to my point -- more so clarify. Regardless of what Mewtwo is exactly, the fact of the matter is that this Mewtwo is now the face of any and all Mewtwo discussion by shear fact that Game Freak and The Pokémon Company has made it this way. If Mewtwo is in Super Smash Bros "he" is going to reflect the direction GF an TPC wants -- which may or may not mean Mewbuu, but at a minimum will be Newtwo. All of the traits that made Mewtwo so memorable (slightly intimidating) are completely absent from this new character. I cannot bring myself to be excited. Could Sakurai keep Mewtwo like his Melee incarnation? I suppose he could, but with two other companies calling the shots there is no way of telling.

I just can't see them only including one in the movie if there are more than one.
