The more I look at these polls (especially with Isaac) I think, if Sakurai really wants Ultimate to be, well, THE ULTIMATE Smash Bros game, he would need to add these characters. It would not only make a lot of fans happy, but it would bring back the magic Smash Bros had since Brawl or even Melee. Smash 4 didn have that as much. It felt more...promotional than the others before it. At least, that's how I felt about it.

While unlikely there is a chance the designs for Rex and Pyra were in fact finished in time to be considered. I wouldn't discount them yet.
Seeing as planning stages began in July 2014 for XC2, it's definitely possible character designs for the leads were finished

Yes, I've seen this theorized, and I agree that it's not impossible. But since the project plan was finished in late 2015, one has to wonder how far back it goes before it was started. If I recall, Sakurai once said the first thing they do is decide on the roster, and the further back in the year you go, the less likely it is that Sakurai had enough info on Xenoblade 2 to be comfortable with penciling them in as opposed to representing X which was fresh in everybody's minds at the time.

Seems very unlikely unfinished characters two years away from releasing would be included in the project plan when there was a character currently experiencing peak relevance from the same series.

I'm almost positive all the third-party DLC characters were licensed for both Smash 4 and Ultimate simultaneously, Nintendo is not that myopic when there's a project plan being drafted concurrently. Moreover, the ballot being used primarily for future reference meant, in all likelihood, a future was planned prior to the ballot.

So I really do think Ultimate's conception began... probably around the same time as the DLC tbh.

Tbh, I don't think they kwow which newcomers will be included until october. Probably only the smash team and some productors of Nintendo Japan know it.
Isn't Bill responsible for the localization of Nintendo games, I assume he is translating and making changes to the game for western audiences so I'd assume he know which characters are in the game. He's just trying to make the timing of reveals seem more mysterious as he's not allowed to give any specific information regarding that

treehouse also needs to get dubbed VAs together for every character, so unrevealed characters likely may also need additional voicework outside Marth, Roy, and Ike

Bear witness to the birth of an urban legend in the wild. It is often the ******* child of coincidence and stupidity.

I was gonna jump down from here
But it was too high
Then my friend shoved me off the edge
Said it wasn’t that high

Now we’re both royally screwed and I know why (why, man?)
‘Cause this is too high, ‘cause this is too high, ‘cause this is too high…

I don't think the newcomers were promotional. The marketing focused on Sm4sh and took advantatge of the characters to promote titles they were. For example, with Rosalina they advertised Mario 3D world, despite her appearence was anecdotal. If it was promotional, characters like Little Mac or Shulk wouldn't be included, when they were heavy requested by the fans.
The difference with Brawl was the marketing didn't take part. Obviously they expanded some franchises and included requested characters. But I'm sure if the webiste had put links with the recent videogame when they announced newcomers, people would have said what you said (For example, with Ike they could put a link with Radiant Dawn, with Diddy Kong some of the virtual console games and/or DK Barrel Blast or Jungle Climber, etc.).

But yeah, I think with this game they'll fulfill the roster with popular and long requested characters due to the Wii U failure and the short time between the two titles. And Isaac has an advantage because we know he was requested for Brawl and, at least, he was high in the DLC polls.

Isn't Bill responsible for the localization of Nintendo games, I assume he is translating and making changes to the game for western audiences so I'd assume he know which characters are in the game. Do you think they are translating the game right now? Personally, I don't think that they'll have the "finished game" until september, tbh. In other cases I could say yes, but considering the Sakurai's annoyance regarding the sm4sh leaks, I can see they're being paranoid with this game. Even with the demo translation there has been leaks... and they only included Ridley as an unknown character.
Also, a lot of VAs are... "protected". For example, the announcer for Smash 4 (Xander) said he didn't know which characters would be included because he had to say a ton of characters names. So Nintendo Japan could send them a list of various phrases. Or, for example, they could register some voices there, like they did with Dr.Coyle in ARMS.

Well there was a picture going around showing a timeline of when the characters were created and Rex and Pyra weren't on it so from that timeline we know know they were designed before April 2016. Now considering Smash's project plan was done on December the timeline for their creation does have a chance at being early enough for the game and considering Blades were designed pretty early I think they had a rough idea of how they wanted to XBC2 to play out. It's not the best chances any character has had but they still are possible. It's a long shot sure I was just saying not to completely dismiss them as stranger things have happened.
Also pretty sure when it comes to Xenoblade it's going to be Rex or nothing so if he came to late we just won't have more Xenoblade characters in Smash until they get in as DLC.

So, I found this while searching through Twitter and someone (not me) was able to put together the top ten most wanted from 5 big Smash communities (or other) and if you take out the de/confirmed characters, Isaac is up in the top 5.

(Sorry if someone else already mentioned this.)
Excluding confirmed (Ridley) and disconfirmed (Waluigi and Bomberman), the placements look like this:

Reddit = #5
4chan = #4
GameFAQs = #3
Source Gaming = #10
Smashboards = #5

This averages out to about #5 overall. If you further exclude Rex and Pyra, who obviously wouldn't be considered for the project plan since they didn't exist, Isaac improves to #9 on Source Gaming.
Hmm... Isaac is a consistent Top 10/Top 5, who'd have thought?

Double-edged sword with encouraging statistics like these. More reason and evidence to believe that Isaac has a fighting chance for this game, but that doesn't keep expectations and a hopeful heart in check very well.

I mean who cares about a character from a best selling series who hasn't been seen for 8 years?

Same issue and (hopefully) similar popularity. Would be nice to douse the relevancy argument with two shining examples right here. C'mon Sakurai, if the demand is there... your ballot should see some good use. That's what this game's newcomers are influenced by, right?

It's far easier to bring King K.Rool back however. Isaac needs his whole franchise revived. DK already has it's franchise "sort of" running. Not as big as it used to, shamefully, but the situation is drastically different. Plus, the SNES DKC games are considered as classics, and DKC1 was on the SNES Mini.

Anyway, question time... If you where to choose between two options; a brand new Golden Sun game, or having Isaac in Ultimate, which would you choose?

In reality, either one creates a ripple effect that would lead to the other happening, but assuming that choosing one means the other would never happen... is it selfish of me to prefer having Isaac in Ultimate? I mean, we don't know what direction Camelot would take the series in or if it would even be a good successor since they seem uninterested in making RPGs.

Whereas with Isaac in Ultimate, I know Sakurai would do his character justice and we'd obviously have the GS games we know and love represented. His character and popularity could at least be immortalized by fans even if GS ends up being finished like Mother.

That's a tough one but I would prefer a GS4 with a proper closure, making the series justice!

Whereas with Isaac in Ultimate, I know Sakurai would do his character justice and we'd obviously have the GS games we know and love represented. His character and popularity could at least be immortalized by fans even if GS ends up being finished like Mother.
Good point. And this is just a theory so don't worry about sounding selfish. I am kinda torn between both choices honestly. Am not sure if Isaac in Ultimate would lead towards a new Golden Sun game however. I mean, Ice Climbers have been in 2 Smash games before Ultimate, Ultimate being their 3rd time.. and still no new game. Sheik also wasn't used again till Hyrule Warriors, and even Ganondorf isn't exactly a major character in Zelda anymore. Smash also didn't result in a new Punch Out game, or even F-Zero or MOTHER. Not even MOTHER 3 will see the light in the West, despite being a major request, and Lucas will hit 3-time veteran status with Ultimate. Same with Roy and Fire Emblem 6 (although am confident he'll get there eventually).

So that's why I asked this question. Because, y'know.. things are never guranteed.

To all those who would vote a new Golden Sun game instead, what if this new game would be a remake? And to those who vote Isaac in Smash, will a potential remake of just the first game alone be enough to change your mind? Am quite curious about this...

If we got a new Golden Sun I'd choose that but if it were a remake then I'd want Isaac in Ultimate. I can play GS1 as much as I want now I don't need to play it again; however, I do need the series properly concluded or Isaac in Smash. Plus GS doesn't need to be revived for Isaac to be in Smash, Sakurai just has to make him a part of the roster.

The difference between Golden Sun and Ice Climber is that the leader of Camelot has said they'd consider making another Golden Sun if demand was high enough. Having Isaac in Smash could, though there's no guarantee, increase demand for the franchise.

To me, the buzz that surrounds Isaac's presence in Smash would be what convinces Camelot it's worth the effort. They went out of their way to say that demand would be what would make it happen. It certainly takes more than a couple of hands on deck to make it a reality, but if Camelot sees the potential profit, they'd at least try.

I would love a remake, I really would. I just don't think it would excite me as much because Isaac in Smash would be something brand new and a big-time achievement. A remake is just a new coat of paint for an existing game (even if it's a beautiful coat of paint).

I mean who cares about a character from a best selling series who hasn't been seen for 8 years?
In addition to what has been said about an active IP vs. an inactive one, the popularity of K. Rool in Japan is what I believe lines him up for his shot. Isaac seems more niche there in comparison.

Anyway, question time... If you where to choose between two options; a brand new Golden Sun game, or having Isaac in Ultimate, which would you choose?
I'd kill for a brand new Golden Sun but I personally feel Smash is more important in cementing the franchise's legacy in Nintendo history and the legendary status of the GBA entries since it has done the same for series like Earthbound, Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem etc. Plus I've been curious to see how the official Smash games would handle Isaac's moveset for ages. Also we'll likely have a new variety of fans who would want to get into the games and naturally begging Nintendo for a fourth Golden Sun.

That seems like the sort of question an evil genie would ask me, only to end up screwing me over. On the surface it appears that one would lead to the other, but I can’t help but imagine the worst possible outcome.

Maybe Isaac gets in Smash, but the series still never comes back. Or maybe we get a Golden Sun 4, but it’s not as good, or Nintendo markets it poorly, or it flops. Then Isaac doesn’t get in Smash and Golden Sun is triple dead.

Still, others have mentioned the fact that Smash is sort of a gaming pantheon that keeps franchises alive in fans’ memories, so I guess I’ll take Isaac in Smash.

Regardless of all of this, there is no possible way that Sakurai has not seen the influx of not only Isaac supporters but King K.Rool as well. He would only be heartless to repeat the same mistake thing as he did for Sm4sh

Really, the fear for me is there's too much ballot competition and not enough time to include them all. We don't know how many more newcomers remain and how many of them come from the ballot.

Was there enough of an influx?

I don't think that's the real question to be honest. We know Sakurai kinda lied when he talked about Bayonetta winning the Ballot, thanks to the datamining done on the games.

I strongly believe that numbers alone won't make the inclusion of a character in Ultimate a sure thing. Let's say Goku "wins" the Ballot in terms of number of suggestions, he won't be included anyway because of course not, he's not a video game character (let's just hope Sakurai never makes me lie by breaking that rule at least...).
So what matters I think is the potential of the characters, and the fact that they were requested for a long time by dedicated communities of fans.
There has to be a reason we had some place to write about the reasons we wanted the characters we suggested into Smash Bros. And on that front I imagine we must have been quite inspired to write passionate things about Isaac and Golden Sun as a whole.
I hope such things will matter (even though I don't know how they would translate our comments since most of us didn't write in Japanese) to Sakurai.

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally aware that it's not as simple as "win the ballot, you're in". There are other factors at play, like needing a moveset and having obtainable rights. My concern doesn't lie with being at the very top. I'm just concerned about how close to the top he actually is. I doubt they're going to get overly selective with the process because how far down can you really go without stretching the purpose of it being a ballot character? I honestly would be shocked to see a character below top 10 or 15 overall (once you filter out those that aren't realizable nor negotiable) get chosen.

Though if they are selective, it might be a double-edged sword. Regardless of his placement (as long as he's up there), they could note that he is a character who has a long-time fanbase, Smash history, moveset potential up the wazoo, and he would represent a brand new series... or they could note that he's currently dormant while many of the other picks around his placement are likely relevant or at least from relevant series. He certainly wouldn't be ideal DLC in such a scenario, and we don't know how many newcomers are left in the base game. That's what matters to me. I know Isaac has many merits, but I'm trying to imagine if it's truly enough to be possibly one of the lucky five/six/seven/ten/however many chosen. We don't even know how loose or strict they are with their selection process this time around. Heck, we can't even be certain K. Rool will make it in.

There may not be a lot of room, so it's always felt like an "all stars align" type of ordeal.

Like I always said Sakurai won't add characters x y and z because they got first through third instead he's more likely to add characters from around the list he finds interesting. So a character like Waluigi may place higher but Sakurai doesn't take him seriously so he is in as an AT whereas Bayonetta who may have scored lower is in. Since Isaac is interesting in every way I think he's in a really good spot to be picked.

I understand what you mean then.
It pretty much depends on whether Sakurai wanted to add a new (here meaning not represented yet) series in Smash or not. One that is from Nintendo of course, and that was not too recent/not even released when Ultimate's development began (which is the main reason people argue there will be DLC for Ultimate to begin with).

I can't say anything for sure, but the more I look at different older series not represented yet, the more I think Golden Sun's the most popular out of them, and the most obvious choice to get a rep in Smash. The different fan polls seem to agree with that statement as well and I'd be quite shocked if someone told me Isaac wasn't Top 10 or 15 at the very worst (outside of the really unrealistic submissions you mentioned).

I think a lot of the time, people arguing for Ayumi Tachibana or Mach Rider are blinded by the fact that Sakurai mentioned them personally.

Yes, he mentioned them. He mentioned them 15 Years Ago, he's not going to have the same ideas and wants and game design philosophy now that he did back then. (Not to mention that he gave up on Mach Rider because it was too silly an idea in the first place, even for Smash.)

You could even stretch this to include Geno, but Sakurai mentioning him is far more recent.

Geno got acknowledged through a costume which is pretty big for such an obscure character.

Yeah, that too. Geno has two big things going for him: he got a Mii Costume, and Sakurai mentioned in an interview that he, personally, wanted to have him in Smash Bros.

If the push of the ballot is enough, Geno might have his day in the spotlight this game.

And as much as I don't care for Geno, I will admit that if he's revealed as one of the next couple newcomers, it could really be a boon to the chances of K. Rool and Isaac. If Sakurai is willing to go out of his way to get the rights to a 25 year old character from a series that has not at all needed their presence to succeed, then it shows that he's willing to look past potential irrelevance and casual obscurity.

I actually think Geno's chances are pretty low. Yes, Sakurai talked about him. In March 2016. After the design document was finalized. I really don't think Sakurai would have talked about him in detail like that if he was going to be included as a playable character in a game he was currently producing.

I am somewhat hopeful in that Golden Sun is easily the most requested new series to get in to Smash. Splatoon already made it, but that's it so far. Usually we get several new franchises with each game (don't have time to tally up the full numbers again right now, but if someone else wants to, it would be welcome). So far we've gotten one. The only other heavily requested one is Rhythm Heaven, thanks to those who jumped on the series after the Gematsu leak, but in the polls, it hasn't had near the polling success that Isaac has (and to anyone who argues that the polls just refer to the hardcore/internet crowd, I'd argue that those asking for Rhythm Heaven are the same group, because they're mostly people who heard about the Gematsu leak, rather than a raw fanbase).

So, that might give Isaac a little more of a boost. I mean, we get Ridley, and Inklings, and we'll probably get K. Rool, and maybe even Dixie, Ashley, or Elma. But they're all from series already in the game. Wouldn't Sakurai want to continue to broaden the pools of games that he's adding? Especially with one that is regularly placing in the Top 5-10 in most polls and hopefully the ballot?
