By the way, a few said that if only one AT was to be promoted it would be Waluigi.
However I came to think of something. Isaac might be the face of the AT.
Remember that during the final smash direct, Isaac was the one to open up the AT section. It's also because he is a veteran AT that came back from oblivion, yes, but it showed him up close to everyone. So that puts him as a good spot to show of AT promotion.
I like Waluigi. And not in just the meme way. I do think he’s a cool character that I would like to see playable. But I honestly feel like Sakurai just might not care for him or feel like he would make a good fighter.
In Sm4sh he highlighted Waluigi getting AT’d and made a comment about “Just because you try hard to be a fighter doesn’t mean it will happen”. And then for Ultimate he threw Waluigi out there right away, almost as like “Don’t tweet me about him. He’s an AT.”
And of course we got Piranha Plant before we got him, which is just crazy. Even plain Mario baddies are getting in before him. Sakurai just might not like Waluigi...
As for Isaac I felt he was more uninformed of the demand and when he saw it he threw the AT back in with a bunch of GS spirits and a full costume. And of course this is just speculation, but he might just not have had time to work on an Isaac fighter with all of the other content they were working on and negotiating with third parties and what not.
So who knows what will happen. Waluigi is more well known and demanded for outside of the community, but if it’s was just going to be based on outside popularity there are other characters that likely would have already been in as well. I don’t know if he wants Waluigi as a playable character.
And I don’t follow “insiders” in Smash speculation because I think they’re full of crap and want attention, (not to name names, but there’s an individual who hangs out in the Geno thread who speculates and because he constantly says Geno will likely get in everyone there treats him like a prophet). But I’m guessing most of them are just saying Waluigi because he’s popular mainstream and have no actual sources telling them he’s being talked about in the dev circle.
