Stewart, Colbert holding Washington eventsGlenn Beck came to Washington, D.C., last month to "restore honor." Jon Stewart hopes to "restore sanity" when he gets to the capital next month.

The Comedy Central host announced Thursday night that he will hold a rally at the National Mall on Oct. 30, capping a week of "Daily Show" broadcasts from Washington.

Stewart says he's not looking for the seasoned rallygoer who may flock to hyperpolitical gatherings carrying a homemade Obama-is-Hitler — or Bush-is-Hitler — sign. Instead, Stewart described the event as a "million moderate march" and a "clarion call for rationality" — in other words, an antidote to the overheated protests on the left and right.

"You may be asking yourself, right now, sitting at home, but am I the right type of person to go to this rally," said Stewart. "The fact that you would even stop to ask yourself that question, as opposed to just, let's say, jumping up, grabbing the nearest stack of holy books, strapping on a diaper and just pointing your car toward D.C. — that means I think you might just be right for it."

Stewart also promised to have premade signs for all the busy, non-conspiracy-minded attendees who don't have time to create their own. One possibility: "9/11 Was An Outside Job." And Stewart closed the segment with another banner that he feels captures the rally's theme: "Take It Down A Notch For America." (You can watch Stewart's announcement below.)

But what's one major Washington rally without a counter-rally? Beck had Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders holding their own event as he descended upon the capital. Stewart has his own (pretend) nemesis: Stephen Colbert.

"Shame on you Jon Stewart," Colbert said later on his own show. "America cannot afford a rally to restore sanity in the middle of a recession. Did you even consider how many panic-related jobs that might cost us in the fear-industrial complex?"

Colbert, in an attempt to fight Stewart's "creeping reasonableness" and "restore truthiness," announced a competing event on October 30: the "March to Keep Fear Alive." You can watch Colbert's announcement below.

This promises to be very, VERY amusing. Loved the signs.

I would've totally come to this if I didn't have to travel across the world.

One thing that always baffles me is how many people I meet at my college who think Coblert is a straight up republican.

Wow, really? The guy's a comedian, a parody of political pundits.

I like Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, but I liked them better during the Bush administration. Back then they mostly made fun of the administration. Now that Obama is president, they mostly make fun of the people who appose the administration. The court jester loses his purpose when he starts siding with the king. I think it's very important to have people who do nothing but trash everything those in power do or try to do, and, for that reason, I actually think that a guy like Glenn Beck does more good for the time being than Stewart or Colbert.

With that being said, I'm sure the Stewart/Colbert rallies will be hilarious.

If you think that, you don't really watch either show.

Does it matter who they criticize? They're both comedians, they're not that political themselves.

I dunno, I think Stewart and Colbert are both pretty political people - it'd be hard to keep up even a comical political show without political knowledge.

I explained why it matters to me. I didn't say that it has to matter to you. And they're both very political, by the way.

I dunno. You have to realize two things when you make a tall claim like "Beck is almost doing more good". First of all, Beck is completely bat**** insane. Second of all, they have been launching a fair share of critique at the obama administration (mostly ripping him on, you know, the real problems like the fact that change has not come as he claimed it would), but you have to remember the golden rule of television broadcasting-the viewers want republicans bleeding on the floor; they won't want obama instead. And his "opponents" do, to be fair, do very stupid things. Sure, attacking Fox news again and again and again is a bit of a low blow, but they earned it ages ago.

Attacking Fox News is not a low blow when they deserve it. Which they do, over and over again.

What change hasn't come? Obama basically got us out of Iraq(the only American troops still over there are there as trainers for the Iraq military), and he passed universal health care. Weren't those his two big campaign promises? I don't really understand what people mean when they say that the "change" he promised hasn't come. It seems like he's done exactly what he said he was going to do.

The problem is that his health care plan is a disaster. People do not have a right to health care. You can't have a right to something that is a service provided by another person. That's exactly what slavery is. Stewart and Colbert don't mock Obama's health care plan at all(presumably because they agree with it). That's why I think that Glenn Beck and the tea party people do more good than they do.

Though I may be misunderstanding what you said,

It's not slavery if you're paying them.
Slavery isn't about money. It's about forcing your will on another person. Imagine if I were to offer you a job working for me for $50 a day. You decline my offer, but I somehow force you to work for me anyway, and I still pay you $50 a day. Are you not a slave just because I'm paying you? You're still being forced to work against your will.

No it's not slavery if they're paying you.

At almost every job someone "forces" you to do something.

Edit: Paying you at minimum wage or above, if you want to be specific.

No, every job doesn't force you to do something. If I don't want to do something at my job, I always have the option of quitting.

That's why I said "forces" with quotation marks.

What has this got to do with healthcare reform?
Health care can't be a right without forcing someone to do something, since it's a service provided by people. Obviously Obama isn't going to force doctors to work against their will(although, if you believe health care is a right, you would have to support forcing doctors to work against their will in the extremely unlikely event that they all quit).

What Obama is doing is forcing everyone to buy health insurance so that the insurance companies can afford to sell it at a price affordable to everyone while still making a profit. He's also not allowing insurance companies to turn anyone down.

What if I don't want to buy health insurance? What if I decide that I'm young and healthy, and I think that the risk of not having health insurance is worth the reward of the money I would save by not having it? Shouldn't I have the right to make that choice? If I'm being forced to do something that I don't want to do(buy health insurance) for the benefit of people who want health insurance but can't afford it, then I am a slave to those people. For whatever amount of time I spend working to make whatever amount of money it would cost for me to buy health insurance that I don't want, I am working against my will, and thus am a slave.

If I choose to break the law and not buy health insurance(either because I don't want it or I don't have the money to pay for it), then I'm going to be fined by the IRS. If the fine is less than the cost of insurance, then I would be stupid to buy health insurance. It would be cheaper for me to just pay the fine and never worry about health insurance. If I ever end up needing health care in an emergency situation, I'll just wait and buy health insurance then, since it will be illegal for insurance companies to turn me down. That means that insurance companies will constantly lose money. If I don't have to buy insurance until I need to use it, and the insurance company has to sell it to me, then I'm basically stealing money from them. It would be like if I were to buy fire insurance after my house had burned to the ground. It's no different than if casinos could only take your money if you were guaranteed to win more. This system couldn't possibly work.

In order for it to work, the fines have to be higher than the cost of health insurance. In this situation, the only reason someone wouldn't buy health insurance is because they couldn't afford it(even at a lower price). In this case, you couldn't possibly expect someone to be able to pay a more expensive fine if they couldn't even afford to buy health insurance at a price lower than the fine. The government's only options in this situation would be to do nothing to people who didn't buy health insurance, in which case the entire health care reform goes down the toilet, or to lock them in prison, in which case innocent people would be locked in cages to provide people with health care that they think they're entitled to.

The only other possibility is that the government uses tax money to pay for health insurance for the people who can't afford it(or just don't want to pay). In that case, even the people who followed the law and bought health insurance like they were supposed to world be fined through taxation to pay for the people who didn't follow the law.

Even ignoring everything that I just said, the idea that health care is a right is complete BS. The word "rights" is a word made up by people to refer to anything that involves one imposing their will on another. The idea that you can have a "right" to a service provided by another person is a joke, because you'd have to impose your will on that person, thus violating their rights, in order to make them provide you with the "right" you think you're entitled to.

Suppose you're the only person on a deserted island, and you're sick and in need of health care. You can't receive health care, since no one else is on the island. So who is violating your "rights" in this situation?

tl;dr

Just checking if you were saying something about how free health care doesn't work. But by the looks of it you just seem to be worried about health insurance.

Yeah, I suppose you do have the option of staving, becoming homeless, and dieing. Unless you are a Buddhist, doesn't sound too appealing though.

This. Plus, he didn't close Guantanamo. Plus, the Iraq war is about as over as it was in 2003 when Bush declared "mission accomplished". Plus, finance reform was a quagmire. Plus, the gulf disaster did not lead, as it should've, to the mass ousting of the MMS heads. Plus...

Germans really shouldn't be talking about American politics. You think the health care system aids health care insurance companies. I can work somewhere else. I can start my own business. The point is that I have other options. No one is using force on me. You're not being honest if you won't admit that there's a huge difference.

And, I know you were being sarcastic, but I should have the choice to starve, be homeless, or die. Freedom includes being able to make bad choices.

That's not universal healthcare, it's just some blowjob to the healthcare companies.
Yes, it is universal health care. And who are the health care companies? The insurance companies? This isn't benefiting the insurance companies at all. I explained how it's going to hurt the insurance companies in my last post.

HOLY **** TL;DR.

I dunno, I do like obama, but I'll say this-his/Biden's tactics regarding the internet disgust me and make me wish that the other option wasn't a ******** conservative nutjob.
Most elections come down to choosing the lesser of two evils. Most of the time I can't even tell which is the lesser evil. That's why I don't vote.
