I'm a hardcore Smash Bros. fanatic. I have 100%ed Smash 64 and Melee (outside of the notifications for beating Adventure on the hardest difficulty with one stock and for playing more than 10,000 matches), and only need two more stickers and about 20 random trophies in Brawl (excluding the 100,000+ match notifications). I have been in a lot of Brawl tournaments at my library and practice against my sister and friends regularly. Last weekend, I spent about (no exaggeration) 20 hours playing Brawl. Normally, I would play with my sister in Brawl about two times a week for about 45 minutes, but I was having fun at a party (I don't need a life, this totally is one!).

There is a teacher at my school who was once a competitive Melee player. I got to face him last May, and brought him down to his final stock (and about 90%) before losing. He was certainly not in his best shape, but I consider this an impressive feat.

I spoke to this teacher a week ago, and he is interested in a rematch. The loser must buy the winner 50 McDonalds chicken nuggets, and deliver them during their lunch period. I never back down from a competition, so I accepted.

I went most of the summer without playing Smash Bros. at all (time taken up by Skyward Sword, Sly Cooper, and Assassin's Creed), and got back into it late August. However, I've only been playing Brawl. A lot of my friends play Melee, but they are not good at all. My sister, although performing well at Brawl tournaments, also sucks at Melee (partially because she uses a GCN controller in Brawl with completely customized controls). Therefore, I have no one to practice against before this match. Not to say that I ever did, I have ALWAYS played against CPU set to level 9 in Melee, but I am sure that the teacher I am fighting has improved since I last fought him.

I need pointers, and I need tips on how to improve by playing against no one but CPU. I have one friend who can take away one of my stock in a 4 stock match, but that is the best of anyone I know in Melee. There is a gaming club at my school, but the other people there don't even kill me.

I main as Marth, and can play as Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, and Jigglypuff, though I don't feel even slightly comfortable with anyone other than Marth. My opponent plays as Fox, though I have seen him use Ganondorf and Link.

Also, I am going to be under pressure this time. It is possible that my sister and parents will be watching, and a close friend of mine will come if she can make it. I don't handle pressure well. I can get up and start to sing and dance in front of any of my classes with ease, but ask me to give a graded speech in front of any one of them and I just completely lose my voice and forget how to read note cards.

Any help at all would be appreciated. I have until December 21 (the end of the world!), but I can call the match on at any time.

Lovage is annoying; ignore him.

Brawl experience can be good since you main Marth.

1. Don't randomly swing your sword. Look for patterns, and hit. Miss, and Marth gets punished.

2. Learn the fox chain grab (upthrow>regrab>upthrow>regrab...practice it on level 3s, 5s, and 6s)

3. Don't use Marth's counter (down+B) a lot (bad habit often formed when fighting CPU's).

4. L-cancel everything. You don't have to L-cancel in Brawl.

5. Learn Marth's dash-dance game and grab range. In Brawl, tripping sucks, therefore dash-dancing also sucks. However, it's really good in Melee.

6. Regarding pressure...if I had an easy cure for pressure effecting performance, then I would be even more famous. Experience in high-pressure situations has thus far been the only proven key to improving performance in those very same situations.

7. Oh, and take him to Final Destination.

Record the match.

Also why not just watch some vids of top players playing whatever chars you think your teacher will play.

Good luck.

Everyone in this thread is annoying and gay, ignore them and listen to me.

Press buttons and press em fast
All moves except forward smash are bad.
Wait why do they call it forward smash
There's not really a backwards smash
They should call it over smash

Don't play against lvl 9 CPUs they partly suck and partly do ridiculous reactionary moves, if you play against CPUs at all I would say lvl 1 and just combo them over and over again.

1. I've certainly learned that Marth is punished whenever he misses.

2. Are you telling me to use Fox? I'd be better off using Ganondorf in Brawl. I don't understand Melee Fox at all!

3. Darn. I tend to spam my counter (probably from the CPU.) Last time, he grabbed me every time I countered, so I do need to avoid it.

4. I can L-cancel almost every time in Smash 64, but in Melee I really can't tell during a match if I canceled or not. But I know how to do it.

5. I can actually dash dance way easier in Brawl because I have tap jump turned off. I can still do it in Melee, but I tend to jump every once in a while. Should I practice up on that? Also, can you pivot grab in Melee?

6. Darn.

7. Why? Can't Fox just spam his gun there?

What is the teacher's name?
Philip Cerami.

Record the match.

I can try to record it. My capture device lags a little bit though, so I can see if anyone else has one.

What color Marth do you usually play as? This is important.

:phone:
I use white Marth.

I''ve noticed that there timing is too good sometimes, but they are completely stupid at other times.

They probably aren't taking this too seriously because it's over chicken nuggets :p

2) He is saying to chain grab Fox using Marth. Throwing him up and catching him is good, and then you can start U-Tilting and stuff at higher damage and it gets painful for Fox.

3) Counter sucks

4) Use a laggy move to tell if it is working correctly (Link Dair)

5) Yes and yes

7) He can, but then you can run up, chain grab him, tilt combos, aerial combos, and then he is dead. FD is very good for Marth

I countered a shine successfully once. Don't try that at home though. Counter is strictly for hard reads and even then is often not the ideal option.

If you can't tell if your lcancelling your probably not. I used to think I was, then one day everything just felt more fluid and I was getting a grab after every nair. You can usually feel the difference.

Final Destination is only good if you know how to chain grab Fox. And because learning to chain grab efficiently and consistently takes more time than you probably have available, FD may do more harm than good. My 2nd choice to take a Fox player to would be on Battlefield because there's no wall for him to ride and you can get easy edgeguards with Down tilt or F-Smash.

Regarding your specific question about spamming lasers on FD, a good Marth can simply get an easy grab and start comboing Fox if all he's doing is laser camping. His lasers don't stun you like Falco's does so there's nothing keeping you from constantly pressuring him.

Apart from CG's FD is also a good stage because it's much harder to run from Marth without any platforms imo

Also, when edgeguarding fox, marth can cover almost every option by standing near the edge it seems

feels like even without an incredible CG game, it would be a good marth stage
