As amazing as the updates were tonight, there was one thing that stood out to me. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who noticed the difference in the first two pictures about 'Widescreen Support' (apart from the first picture being standard, and the second picture being widescreen!)

All four characters have the same controller slot in each picture, but Mario and Snake switch positions in the second picture. Could this mean that when the match starts, players are not bound to the same spawn location as they were in Melee which was based off what controller slot you were?

Not amazing, but it certainly made me appreciate the update a little more, just like turning Tap Jumps off last night.

*EDIT*

Another picture of Battlefield with each player starting at a different spawn locations from the Wi-Fi Play update (normal display o.O).

I noticed this too. It's another little subtle thing that mixes things up.

If you actually spawn in different places that it is.

This was being discussed in "The official OMG tonigh prediction" thread. It's not that big of a deal and didn't deserve a thread. Just letting you know that's all, no hard feelings.

I felt like it was a point worth a little recognition, so here's my take.

An explanation of what stage spawning is to me:

In melee depending on what controller slot you were using, your character would spawn in a certain set location. Each stage held this dedicated spot for each player.

When you died and came back (i'll refer to it as death spawning) depending on what stage you were on the controller slot you had would sometimes matter and sometimes not. For instance in hyrule everyone deathspawns in the same spot unless more than one person dies at the same time. In places like final destination depending on your controller slot you would spawn in a certain location.

In brawl there seems to be a "random" stage spawn. The spark to my investigation came from dojo update that showed wide screen play where mario and snake were in different spots. I didnt want to be just "OMG the dojo says this!" so i did more investigation and found this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wgefh4tXyw (the first 0-2 sec shows where the characters start and their "controller slot order" is displayed through their portraits on the bottom)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlhwdvf_U14&NR=1 ( in the beginning it shows the controller slot order (around 20 sec) and then around 47 sec it shows the "stage spawning". Notice the difference from the previous)

*NOTE: the places that i spotted these changes were all at BATTLEFIELD, so once again it could be a "stage-related spawn" like that of "deathspawning".

Why does this matter?
Sometimes i would care about what controller slot i used because starting a match on a platform gives a *small but still, an advtange to an opponnent who starts below you, especially if the character you play is not good with platforms. Also in a stage like final destination, where a character respawned would somtimes result in them coming back and scoring a kill. Say you spawn on the left of final destination so you spend most of your combat there (mind games!) and if you quickly die off the side you are right there for a counter attack on their edgehogging.

A bit of overanalyzing but still something to think about.

There's no random spawn.

I seriously take this as a mind game from Sakurai. I believe he just switched Mario and Snake and let them stand there, hence the P1, P2, etc over everyone's head after they've all been idle.

You really looked into this, I respect that.

Really it doesn't matter to me. I don't think it will be Random Stage Spawning, but I also think it doesn't matter much. 7% Damage from your foe usually just tide over through the match. Not trying to be an elitist here though, just expressing my opinion.

For the sake of mentioning it, I forgot which update it is, but the players on battlefield are in other locations. Players1,2,3,4 are positioned like a clock at 12,3,6,9 in the other pic.

I really doubt that.

Big, spooky castle in eastern europe.
Was there ramdom spawning at Eforall? No. Would it really make that much of a difference, considering that you come out invincible every time you die? No. Therefore, random spawn seems like a waste of Sakurai's time. But hey, you never know.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but... Do we control where characters spawn in Stage builder.
If the stage has a flat surface, it's very likely that the computer would do it automatically.
They'll probably just appear side by side.

Funny thing to post after someone just shows us there WAS. Does your foot taste good?

Anyways, I believe this will make things a lot more interesting. I know that my roommate josh always plugged his controller in a different slot because he hated player 2 spawnpoints. This should make things better I think.

I think you have brought up a great point, I hope we will be able to control where the characters spawn in stage builder.

Both of those videos in his post show the characters spawning in the same order, even though he mentions the are different

P3
P4 P2
P1
Actually, they did start in different locations.
Video 1
P4(Fox)
P3(Metaknight) P2(Pit)
P1(Diddy)

Video 2
P2(Metaknight)
P4(Fox) P3(Ike)
P1(Mario)

*EDIT*
We're talking about spawn locations, not spawn order.

Yeah, now we have to keep restarting matches to get in fair positions.
No, I believe that each character chooses which of the 4 slots they use on the character select screen.

Each SLOT from the character select screen has a set spawn location. But Player 1 can now use the 3rd, yellow box, if they waned to.

Choosing what "SLOT" from the "character select screen" is basically the same thing as choosing a controller port. (WHY?) well because when u use your wiimote its not really "plugged in" to a certain port so you choose it at the character select screen.

But also NO, these "SLOTs" from the "character select screen" are NOT set spawn locations, if u notice in both videos FOX is the FOURTH SLOT in the "character select screen", but starts in DIFFERENT places. So if the slots from the character select screen were tied to a spawn location then fox would spawn in the same location both times.

Yea, I noticed your second point as I entered this thread.

But on your first poitn, I take it you don't own a Wii. A Wiimote gets assigned to a "slot" whenever it connects to a Wii. It's represented by a glowing light.

oh duh, idk why i was thinking that

but i was going on your point that player one could choose to play as player 3 on the character select screen, so i was thinking that when i was rewatching the videos then i realized they werent choosing where to play as, they were just opening the spots like u do in melee -_- silly me, but still their spawn locations were different
