Sen. Robert Ford to be exact. (link to article - http://www.counton2.com/cbd/news/local/article/sen._robert_ford_pushes_to_outlaw_profanity/19213/)

I think this is pretty ridiculous

"State Senator Robert Ford is hoping to outlaw lewd language and is pushing for a bill that would prohibit profanity.

Under the pre-filed bill, profanity could land you in jail for up to 5 years and/or cost you up to $5,000 in fines.

Which words are exactly considered profane is still unclear, but the bill does have a list of qualifications for profanity including words or actions that are lewd, vulgar or indecent in nature.

We spoke to Debra Gammons with the Charleston School of Law about freedom of speech.

She reminds that the First Amendment is not absolute. You cannot say whatever you want whenever you want to.

Courts will usually look at where the words were said and who heard them. Children are usually protected.

You can read the bill for yourself at http://www.scstatehouse.gov/cgi-bin...118&conid=4356264&result_pos=0&keyval=1180056 . "

Wait, what? So here is a grown man still crying because someone said ****? I'm pretty sure normal people stopped finding most profanity offensive somewhere in the 8th or 9th grade. How are you even suppose to enforce a law like that? It's not practical, it's completely stupid, and you know what, it's a violation of freedom of speech. Mindlessly cussing makes a person look stupid no doubt about that, but really, a person has a right to if they want.

Silly social conservatives and their attempts to deny basic freedoms.

Cussing is prolly the best known way to vent anger, at least IMO. It provides cost-free benefits.

It should't be banned cause it's your god givin right to freedom of speech. I do agree on banning it in a family type enviornment. Ex: Beaches, resturants, amusment parks, etc.

But people can have better coversations with out cussing. <.<

I'm all for minimizing profanity in areas like restaurants and other all-age places... but geez, that's what manners are for. Most people who cuss constantly either have bad manners or are looking for attention. In those cases, they deserve a slap upside the head- not a jail sentence. If you injure yourself, you're obviously going to scream some sort of profanity. Imagine going to jail or being fined because you screamed the F-word when you broke your leg. How stupid.

lolololololololol

Toronto has more gun crime than Las Vegas. Toronto has a ban on firearms.
Less fatal car crashes happen in India than in America. Seatbelts aren't even mandatory in India. Niether are traffic laws.
The US has more drug abuse than some third world countries that have no laws against it.

So yeah, it makes sense we should ban profanity.
****ing lawers nowadays, huh.

Cursing out of anger or whatever, I hear, is one of the best ways to relieve stress and to express your emotions more wholly.

Also, it would prolly end up being a life sentence, since I'm sure prison isn't exactly swear-free.

Cool! I hope this spreads to Georgia so I don't have to hear the dirty mouths of those kids at my school anymore!

If it's illegal, it's fun. Keep that in mind.

~Freedom of Speech~ period
there are limits and to constitutional rights

i have a few problems with this and at the same time i like it.

i really am not a huge fan of foul language, but sending someone to jail over foul language is ridiculous. maybe on the word and situation as the video points out. but someone walking down the street and saying "S*** man that was awesome." that would be ludicrous to arrest them.

if it was based upon the place, and audience. that would be ok. and also the owners consent wether he wants a clean language zone i.e school class rooms, libraries, book stores (they like it quiet there)

but once we begin heading down this path where will it stop.

Anyways, I doubt this will actually happen. Imo it's impossible to enforce something as ridiculous as this. And even if it was, the consequences are way to extreme. They are just words. This guy needs to grow a pair

Lol why am I not surprised?
Your not surprised because parties don't mean anything for in the United States anymore.

Politicians in both parties now have the mutual objective of keeping their own pockets filled with cash and suppressing dissent against corrupt practices.

Worst thing about this is the ambiguity associated with profanity! (as a resident of Utah) I've met families who consider the word "crap" profane. Add that to the ambiguity of the bill itself,

South Carolina Legislator said:
"(3) publishes orally or in writing, exhibits, or otherwise makes available anything obscene to any a group or individual; or"
you get government can basically decide what's criminal on a whim.

And so I say, anyone who supports this is ********.

It was a democrat who made the bill
He can call himself whatever he wants. He's a social conservative. Although, he'd better be really socialist (edit: economically) or he shouldn't call himself a Democrat.

Democrats are in favor of high govt. intervention in the economic sector, but low govt. intervention in the social sector.

On the communism -> capitalism scale, Dems in the U.S. tend to be center/center-right, Republicans tend to be right/far right

Republicans are the opposite of Democrats.

Libertarians want minimal govt. intervention in both sectors.

Populists are the opposite of Libertarians.

I'm aware that the plaforms switched, but I didn't know when. I odn't see how it's relevant, though. In 2008, a Democrat has distinct defining characteristics, and if that senator doesn't identify himself with those characteristics, he shouldn't be calling himself a Democrat.

Edit: oh shucks, I was typing before you posted Azua, so I didn't see your post beforre this one. Are you really going to make me delete all that. I don't think I was unfair to either side.

I like when people vent by cursing out their furniture or whatever. Even if it's in my presence, I don't mind. It helps them blow off steam so they are less cranky towards me, and it makes them happier. Can someone explain the drawback of profanity?

The thing about profanity, is that offends religious persons who misunderstood the following

the holy ******* bible said:
But I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven for it is God's throne; Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Matthew 5:34-37
Hey, airheads, Jesus is not talking about cussing, look at the context and you see that he is talking about about things like swearing an oath (making a promise) to things like government, businesses, and even organized religions. So as far as I can tell, there is no drawback whatsoever to cussing.

This is ****ing bull****.

Seriously though, how the heck would you enforce this? I mean come on, jail time for cussing? Not only that, but including shooting birds?

Almost as stupid as the new no pants below your groin or so law in my area. You can get fined a lot.

What happened to constitutional rights? (and yes, I don't usually like cussing or baggy pants, but at least I'm not trying to turn the constitution upside down)

edit: actually, the waistline can't be around the groin area I believe... I'm not so sure though...

I will never tell. :D
South Carolina is holding an impossible child's dream, is it really possible that the leaders of this state could even have ignorance and childishness of this magnitude?
