So I was on For Glory, trying to get the hang of Corrin, when I came across this Bayonetta player. Knowing full well that Bayonetta has a poor neutral, I attempted to focus on harassing them with Dragon Fang Shot, grabs, and an occasional F-smash. But, unlike most Bayonettas, this one didn't seem to mind so much. He seemed pretty content using Bayo's agility to stay out of my way and building up chip damage with random bullet attacks that happen during some of her moves. He wasn't the most challenging Bayonetta player I've faced, but he sure was annoying. Like, super annoying. Far more so than any Bayonetta I've faced before.

I decided to swap to Charizard for the next round, 'cause I wanted to test some nifty things I heard about his matchup with Bayonetta. He decided to follow my lead the next round and swapped to his main...Sonic. That explained a lot actually.

He was actually a really good Sonic, and possibly one of the best players I've ever fought on For Glory. All this time playing against spammy Sonic players, I never actually realized what it was like to fight some who had skill. It was just as annoying as everyone says. It didn't help that my mains, Charizard and Mewtwo, are characters who like to have some breathing room in neutral.

So, uh, I've come here to ask you; what would you say Sonic's most exploitable weaknesses are? I mean, a high tier like him probably doesn't have many, but I really need to get better at Sonic match ups. I already said who my mains are, and I'm picking up Corrin as a secondary. If I can't figure out a way to make the matchup work with those three, I might need to pick up a second secondary, which doesn't sound easy for a novice competitive player such as myself.

..Oh, and not to sound salty because I think he's annoying or anything. I lost those matches, fair and square.
Besides, I do kind of like Sonic. I've got his amiibo and stuff.

Rule number one when fighting a Sonic: exploit his landing. Sonic just cannot land at all, and if he tries to spring jump you, don't be scared. It only has an active hitbox as it's falling. If it already touched the ground, then it shouldn't hit you.

Sonic also has a surprisingly hard time killing, so if you're at high percentages, use moves that are safe to use otherwise you'll be punished.

In addition to what Sensane Sensane said, you do not want to recklessly approach Sonic. He's strictly a bait and punish character, and doesn't have any tools to do raw approaches on an enemy who's paying attention. In my experience, Sonic games are waiting games. Using mind games, movement, positioning, etc, both players try to force an approach. Sonic does this because this is his strongest and easiest way to get his best hits in, and the other player will do this because they know it is unsafe to approach Sonic for this reason. Along these same lines, camp the hell out of Sonic if you get the lead, and try very hard not to lose the first stock. If Sonic ends up getting the stock lead, most of the time he will run away with the game because he is so very hard to catch when he's playing defensive. However, he is also very bad at regaining the lead, since he is bad at aggression and has mediocre kill power.

Well, Flamethrower and Shadow Ball are usually great tools for defensive play, but Sonic just moved so fast I had a hard time actually using them. I guess I'll just use Corrin for that matchup with her super-safe Nairs and the like. Thanks for the advice.

No, I don't remember the name at all.
I used Mewtwo and Corrin's black alt as well, if that rings any bells. I don't remember if I ever beat their Baynonetta, but I couldn't beat their Sonic once. They were clearly a character specialist.

Oh yeah, and don't take For Glory too seriously when it comes to losses. Sonic literally becomes SSS+ tier on wifi.

Just when I was starting to feel bad about some personal emotion crap I come here and find conversations that made me laugh and get a bit more positive. Thanks for unintentionally helping Sanic boys. Continue to go fast.
