Now, when it comes to what advice is given regarding what foods babies should and shouldn't have, it can all get a bit confusing. For example, some may say you shouldn't give them a bottle until 6 weeks, whereas others say it makes no difference. However, some parents' attitudes to their child's food is just appalling.
My mum and one of her friends were talking, and through their conversation it was revealed that my dad's cousin's daughter (or something like that) has a five-month-old son, and at that age they've generally started solid foods and are getting used to them. And here's what she gives the child for food: chips and chilli.
Seriously, how ****ing stupid can you get? Even if it was a one-year-old I'd be wary of that sort of thing, but a baby that's just started solids... The chips aren't even pureed or cut up or anything; they just give them the chips whole! If they don't change that, the child is going to get seriously overweight, and through no fault of its own. Not to mention the excess salt it probably takes from the chips too. And as for chilli... well, babies just aren't equipped for that sort of thing, and that should be obvious. And don't get me started on using cola for baby bottles...
The sad thing is that there are other people who'll feed their babies McDonalds or something similar (usually because they eat it a lot themselves). In one case, a child even died due to taking in too much salt from their food. The parents are dooming their children to being overweight or obese before they can even say 'no'.
Think about it. If a parent hit their child or the child was suffering from malnutrition, the parents would get into a lot of trouble with social services, and possibly even get the child taken away from them. By giving their babies foods like that, they're causing them just as much suffering in the future, through the increased risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes that they suffer from, since overweight children often tend to be overweight as adults too.
The majority of the time the case seems to be that the parents don't know any better. But really, if they don't know how to look after their child probably, then they shouldn't have had it in the first place.
tl;dr IMO parents who make their babies dangerously overweight should be punished for child abuse. Agree or disagree?
