Now, when it comes to what advice is given regarding what foods babies should and shouldn't have, it can all get a bit confusing. For example, some may say you shouldn't give them a bottle until 6 weeks, whereas others say it makes no difference. However, some parents' attitudes to their child's food is just appalling.

My mum and one of her friends were talking, and through their conversation it was revealed that my dad's cousin's daughter (or something like that) has a five-month-old son, and at that age they've generally started solid foods and are getting used to them. And here's what she gives the child for food: chips and chilli.

Seriously, how ****ing stupid can you get? Even if it was a one-year-old I'd be wary of that sort of thing, but a baby that's just started solids... The chips aren't even pureed or cut up or anything; they just give them the chips whole! If they don't change that, the child is going to get seriously overweight, and through no fault of its own. Not to mention the excess salt it probably takes from the chips too. And as for chilli... well, babies just aren't equipped for that sort of thing, and that should be obvious. And don't get me started on using cola for baby bottles...

The sad thing is that there are other people who'll feed their babies McDonalds or something similar (usually because they eat it a lot themselves). In one case, a child even died due to taking in too much salt from their food. The parents are dooming their children to being overweight or obese before they can even say 'no'.

Think about it. If a parent hit their child or the child was suffering from malnutrition, the parents would get into a lot of trouble with social services, and possibly even get the child taken away from them. By giving their babies foods like that, they're causing them just as much suffering in the future, through the increased risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes that they suffer from, since overweight children often tend to be overweight as adults too.

The majority of the time the case seems to be that the parents don't know any better. But really, if they don't know how to look after their child probably, then they shouldn't have had it in the first place.

tl;dr IMO parents who make their babies dangerously overweight should be punished for child abuse. Agree or disagree?

I remember hearing about a girl who weighed 144 pounds at the age of six. It was in a small part due to genes she'd been born with that gave her a naturally slow metabolism, but her parents did nothing to try and make up for that, overfeeding her junk food. Obesity IMO is just as dangerous as malnutrition. Really though, what can actually be done about it? Companies produce junk because it sells. It sells because it tastes good and kids want it. Parents buy it for their kids to keep them quiet.

We live in a frighteningly corrupt world, and all we can do is try to deal with it as best we can with what we're given.

Chilli is pretty harmless actually, but the other stuff makes me lol.

QFT. And tbh, I think that there are some countries where obesity is even more dangerous. Take the US, for instance. Just by looking at how much food we waste, you can tell that we're definitely not suffering too badly from malnutrition.

Hell, even our homeless can eat and stay decently healthy (speaking entirely from a food point of view of course) if they pay attention to what they're scrounging around. Freegans proved that.

My dad had a party for his promotion. This eight year old girl went that looked easily 90 pounds. :/

Hmm... maybe if it was a mild chilli. But I wouldn't thought that a baby's stomach wouldn't be properly equipped for that sort of thing.

My guess is that it's because the general advice for feeding babies is, 'Give them what you eat'. Obviously they mean stuff like the same sorts of vegetables or whatever, but you can definitely see how people would interpret that the wrong way. If someone's eating a lot of chips, it's inevitable that their baby will end up having some too.

It seems a shame that in a society where people are supposed to be well educated, there are some people who have no common sense whatsoever.

Capsaicin is what makes chilli hot. The quantities found in food are really not harmful. You could down a bottle of Tabasco and your stomach would have nothing more than a little irritation for like 20 minutes.

Stomachs are strong, and chilli really isn't that big a deal. South Asians give their kids spicy food from a pretty early age, like spicy enough that most white people would run around screaming "WATER", so don't worry, just laugh at the mother for giving it chips.

I have been following this guy's videos for a while now, and this video is VERY relevant to the discussion.

Food affects everything. Nutrition is WAAAAYYYY more important then exercise when in comes to being healthy.

Something he said that really stuck out with me was this:

Good healthy food is more expensive then the junk. Organic fruits and vegetables, free range poultry, grass fed beef, unpasteurized milk are all more expensive then their less healthy counterparts. But if you are going to buy expensive sneakers, expensive tv's, expensive cars, expensive clothes, and keep feeding your children cheap unhealthy foods, then your priorities as a parent are not there.
