My Gem is what gives me my powers, but Jasper's convinced my mom's still around and just shapeshifted into me, like some kind of disguise...she doesn't understand that we're different, that I'm her son, that she's gone.

"And because of Jasper's mistaken belief, she's been hunting down Steven for a long time, thinking that she's actually hunting down her old arch-enemy..."
