Soundwave is more morally complex in the comics to my understanding. Loyal to Megatron, but also loyal to what he believes is right. That's not even getting into his care for his cassette companions.

Then came 2010's Transformers Prime, which had the name put into vain and sassy homosexual car medic guy as part of the main Decepticon cast, quickly becoming a fan favorite, who as such managed to get plenty of merch, and thus more incarnations of him appeared in other continuities.

Yep. Funnily enough, his toy came first and stablished him as a skillful and cunning warrior in the packaged bio. So the reason in the cartoon he got treated poorly? Because the writers hated him and his voice, but since they were mandated to use him, they decided that the least they could do was to blow him up per episode just so he wouldn't show for the rest of it and would get less screentime.

As you can guess, it had the opposite effect.
