so why did you close the door to your room when you were playing that song so as to prevent outside people from hearing it?

can i just take a moment to say that the 'haters gonna hate' mentality is ruining this generation
Agreed.

Also, can you imagine how advanced our society would be if people didn't think, "I'll just let the next generation worry about it 'cause I'll be dead."? Or the common, "I want them to suffer like I did when I was their age."

i've been listening to taylor swift and playing lvl 9s for 4 and a half hours
just got the deluxe cd in the mail about 4 hours ago too. Pretty much just been doing the same thing. Minus playing lvl 9's.

5 albums. 5 hits. 0 misses. How does she do it?

I'd agree when people apply it when doing something morally reprehensible. However, when people express that they enjoy something that is perfectly okay to enjoy (like music), and others try to claim how that music is clearly bad, the haters gonna hate mentality is a pretty good one imo.

@ Cobrevolution Cobrevolution I legit love tay tay's music lol. Doesn't really affect anyone negatively, no need for god to get involved here.

it affects artists with legitimate talent who should be playing shows that she's putting on at various venues.

But go ahead, I'm sleep..

I'll be home usual time (1215ish). So if there's a spot, k

I'll enter if I get to play all my matches on console. People all welcome to come to my apt to play

music has never been about who has the most talent, but who makes the stuff that sounds the best, which is determined by popular opinion. Since, you know, music is subjective and all. Besides Tay Tay plays lots of instruments and writes her own ****.

I weep for the world because of that prioritization of "best" sounding over talent. I think pop and popular opinions on music have deteriorated drastically in the past 20 years.

i feel awful that there are bands who work their ass off touring and blowing crowds away for 26 dollar tickets at clubs and ballrooms, and someone like swift can sell out an arena. It's depressing.

hooks and catchy chords have always worked, and pop has exploited that grossly over time. Queen was pop once, gnr, ministry, zeppelin.

now, look. Swift, any American idol, any youngster turned singer, it's sad.

karajan, what sounds best is clearly determined by opinion, or maybe youre just using your karajan logic on this too.

I really don't get the whole obsession with pop music being "bad." the funny thing is that it always reaches a point where a large group of people think all the good music has already been written and that it's "not how it used to be." pop music is a profitable business... im surprised you havent gotten used to it.

regardless of how similar pop songs are, a lot of them are really good. a lot of the bands that you guys consider to be "good" share a **** ton of similarities to other music and even repetition within their own music (i know because ive listened to the stuff cobr listens to). it's not all that different lol. unless youre listening to avant garde jazz or something that is literally in-the-moment spontaneous music, all the stuff that you guys listen to is simple patterns that share a ton of similarities with pop music.

im not sad when musicians i listen to cant make tons of money playing what they love. thats what part time jobs are for. music doesnt owe them a living. they do it because they like it anyway

that being said, **** taytay's new music. she should go back to country

To be fair, many pop musicians have worked there asses off to get where they are as well.

fact is, sedda, there have been teams of writers put in place by labels and businesses to monetize music and carve **** up finer amongst themselves. that's why there are often multiple writers accredited to singles and even whole albums.

there is a huuuge difference between the band collectively writing a song and an artist having a song written for them by an outside source, someone who is outside of the creative circle.

but again, look at what pop was and look at how it changed.

beatles, stones, etc in the 60s, queen, police, who, sabbath, various funk and disco stuff in the 70s, HAIR METAL, MJ, prince and techy dance stuff in the 80s, and then...the 90s kinda hit with the whole grunge scene, radio rock and what we now call "pop" (boy bands, for instance, britney, green day, that kind of ****).

now, there are definite similarities in styles of music as things evolved, but i'll call bull**** if you say talent hasn't diminished among those popular acts. like anselmo said: back in the day, guys ripped off their 10 favorite bands, and you got all those great kinds of music. now, they're ripping off their two favorite bands, and each other, and it's all going downhill.

i get where you're coming from sedda, and i know you're into all that pattern recognition and melody and ****, but the fact that something catchy, short, vapid and vague is considered better nowadays is heartbreaking.

i'm definitely sad when musicians tour and tour and tour and can't sell records like pop acts. how is it a good thing that half the people who go on stage play instruments half the time...that lip synching is still a thing...that live bands don't even accompany many acts anymore? come on

this is rambling, i'll stop. again, i don't mind if people like stuff. everyone likes what they like. what irks me is when nickelback is playing (and most likely selling out) PNC bank arts center, and i've gotta go see clutch at starland...

edit: clubba i don't think pop acts who have risen to stardom via american idol for instance have worked nearly as hard as a band like the melvins. i don't think they've given their demos out to hundreds of people to get exposure, nor do i think they've done much besides be generally appealing.

like i said, pop music is a business. it was only a matter of time until they came up with a reliable formula to make it profitable. nothing wrong with that. that's where your thing about "less talent" comes from. the talent is definitely there, but the business is completely different now. the radio isn't the place to look for new music anyway.

edit--

let me put it to you this way (as someone who loves jazz)

this is something jazz musicians complain about a lot. theyll literally say stuff like "you should listen to this, and if you dont like it it's because you 'dont get it' ."
the truth is that people don't listen to jazz because they cant identify with it. jazz musicians today are more concerned with interesting harmonic devices than exciting music and communication. if they had exciting music to show, the masses wouldnt be able to get enough of it, but thats not the case.
the masses don't listen to whats hot on the scene because it's "better." they listen to it because it's popular and you can dance to it and have a good time. i dont know why "catchy" has such a bad connotation. people just want to have a good time.

for something to be considered music it needs rhythm, but most importantly, it needs an audience that can identify with it. whether it's good or bad is up to you, but don't look down on other people because you feel like your music is better. its just kinda dumb.

Just looked up kelly clarkson out of curiosity, seems like she did the whole work lots of part time jobs to finance making a demo and hand it out to whoever she could thing. I'm guessing that for most of the american idol finalists, the talent show wasn't their first rodeo but rather one of many attempts to make it in the music business. I wouldn't say getting deep into a talent show is easy, but yea it is definitely more talent based and less work ethic based than the normal route for musicians.

Btw you should also read the early life section of tay tay's wiki. She was handing out demos and seeking out music labels at age 11.

I also know that rappers have to work pretty hard to actually make it big.

Basically in the music business if you don't have a personal connection with someone already in the music business, it is pretty tough to break into it. You have to at least work hard enough to stand out from the crowd of people trying to do the exact same thing you are.

adding to what clubba said, it's extremely easy to self produce music nowadays. it's also cheaper than ever too. the music industry expands way beyond the radio.

you can literally write a symphony if you have a laptop and youre willing to drop a few hundred dollars on high quality sound samples.

the internet is a way better place to find new INDEPENDENT artists. like last week i found a guy who plays sitar to electronic percussion. ****ing winning.

what im trying to say is that music is more than just trying to break into the music business. if you want to make a lot of money, it's basically all connections. if you want to make the music that you want to make, you dont need to be tied to any labels now. it's a great time to be a music aficionado

hip hop is very different, and again, if you look at what's popular now...can we really have a discussion about tyga and future? like, joe budden and blu have been holding it down for years, and yet we got 2 chainz making videos and selling out shows...

this though
it needs an audience that can identify with it.
that's the trick, isn't it? the fact that pop is so generally vague that it's hard to NOT 'identify' with it.

i'll read more about various POP STARS and their alleged early preteen hardships, though. however, i still don't think that compares to being road warriors and still having to build up cred.
