Yeah Gav I feel you. It's a shame this game is plagued with some toxic community members that just cannot wait for another chance to belittle you, or anyone else that releases any personal detail. There are just those few bad apples that make the online community just awful. Too bad we can't all be friends, but that is a mere pipedream, sadly.

It makes me want to quit online smash entirely, but I love this game and don't want to give it up because of the attitudes of people who frequent servers and Skype chat. This community has no future online, there are reasons not many people stay after being added to Skype groups, and the inane and cancerous bickering become too much to new people, and it turns them off from playing the game they thought they loved. This is not speculation, I have been told multiple times this is the reason they do not play as much. I will not name drop because that is tacky, but I am the person to add on Skype to join groups, and I've been told how generally unhelpful and irritating the 'main' (cancer) chat is/has become. Growth in the community has to start with being a better community at large, and this would be possible without the troll attempts and instigation of a few select people.

add me on skype and i'll add you to the ORIGINAL chat. facebook:robstone

aka non cancer

if someone wants to play the game and then wants to quit because of skype (a completely unrelated thing), that's their problem, isn't it? you can always log out/leave groups/turn off notifications if you keep getting readded. sit on server and wait for games. that's not uncommon.

Karajan: There is not much wrong with the console community, other than the lack of more wide-scale mettups and tournaments. This is the online community, specifically the Skype community.

This is a terrible excuse to continue with what you do in the cancer(your 'main') chat. If many people leave, all for the same reason, there must be something that the group does wrong that inhibits growth in newer players. Sure these players can sit on server and try to find games, but we all know that the kaillera community is in general pretty selective with who they play. People who are 'good' don't want to risk playing versus someone who is potentially terrible, they rather play with players already known in the community to not be bad/laggots. There is nothing really wrong with this though, its somewhat a natural occurrence. Skype is the ONLY other place people tend to use for finding matches and advice from better players. If what is supposed to be the main skype group consistently has a problem with the discussion in the group, there must be some sort of problem, wouldn't you agree?

why do you guys fight so much? jeez

imo the hate towards gav was justified. I remember him cussing me out on kaillera last year after we played because of lag (after i had apologized for the lag). Don't have any problems with him anymore, but he was a douchebag to me without any reason. This back and forth is just silly though, and it has to stop

Leave Gav alone. If he really is a ****ty person, ignoring him will either cause him to change or to leave forever (I'm talking about the people who have a problem with him... not trying to say he's a bad person)

Why can't you guys just not talk to each other? It's sooooo easy. Easier than Falcon uair combos

discussion in the group ranges from smash talk, to abortion, to personal lives, to tournament occurrences, to twitch plays pokemon, to pizza. there is no centralized discussion. if someone says something stupid, someone else will respond.

truth be told, i'd rather read skype msgs than kaillera's main chat. you wanna talk about CANCEROUS?

i see a lot of people i added to the group stay and play, but just as many leave because of the sheer influx of messages. most people turn off notifications.

and just in case anyone forgot that 90% of the smash community is losers (sic)...

I really dont remember ever playing you but im sorry i cussed u out. but to say that gives everyone a good reason to hate me is not right. Me cussing you out doesn't justify people texting my phone with insults, posting my picture calling me a f@ggot over and over and constant harassment from cobr. If u think people should hate me, I would love to see how u think ppl should treat smasherx74 or caneut or any other real troll. I could also care less about who thinks im a "****ty" person. no one here has never met me in real life and they never will. soon i will have forgotten about this community and moved on with my life. If people wanna cry on smashboards about how bad a person i am, thats their problem and they need to look into the mirror themselves.

The fact that you made a twitter account solely to put Gav on a pedestal to laugh upon, is a real testament to how small of a person you truly are. You can say whatever you want in regards to how it isn't a troll/flame account, but everyone in their right minds knows that it was created just so people can laugh at Gav when he rages/says something you deem laughable. Even in your head you must know how petty of a thrill this is. It makes me sad knowing that the online community will never be as strong as it deserves to be, partially because of this inane trolling and overall bad attitudes of a select few people.

i think im the best troll so far
i'm still think its 10% likely that studstill is actually karjan pulling off the master troll, and that's even after me having a voice chat with studstill over skype, and people having met studstill irl (I think?). THAT's how much troll power karajan has when he turns his game on.

cobr is pretty mean online

I guess this is where I feel it's appropiate to chime in on a topic like this.

I've been playing quite a bit of melee online recently. Why? The minor reason is because I want to place decently at local melee tournaments that aren't more than an hour away from me (I don't travel to any melee-only tournaments farther than an hour). The major reason is that there's also always someone happy enough to play me in melee online. Nobody good ever goes on kaillera servers anymore and out of the few that do, the only one who is willing to play long 1v1 sessions with me is LD. I can't even remember the last time I played anyone good on the server that wasn't LD.

And to the topic of the skype chat, I tried that too a long time ago. I had gotten tired of waiting on the server for no one to show up, so I joined the skype chat in hopes of constantly being able to play against good players. It didn't work (for me at least), because once again nobody wanted to play with me and instead wanted to focus on arguing with each other and insulting each other and talking about literally everything else that wasn't smash. Left that chat a long time ago when I realized I wasn't going to get matches from that chat. I'm not surprised that it eventually self-destructed.

On the melee boards, there is a SINGLE thread dedicated to online play. It gives exact instructions on how to set everything up and gives players a modified version of dolphin SPECIFICALLY for online melee. It also links to a dedicated IRC chat for melee online. Players who want to find matches go on this IRC and ask to play anyone that's close to them in their region. Once they find an opponent, someone hosts the game in p2p and the emulator gives you a hash code based on your IP. You simply give this hash code to the other player and they paste it into their p2p client (Giving away your ip address is not required) and with this code they automatically connect to the host. The modified dolphin client comes with an action replay code for melee "Global Melee Netplay Settings", so when the game is launched it automatically takes you to the character select screen where all the tournament settings are already set. You just pick your characters and go. I've played for so many hours already and have only run into a desync ONCE. You can even change the number of frames of input lag on the fly. When the game starts to lag, you simply increase the number of frames until it doesn't lag anymore without having to constantly restart the session.

The sad part is, melee's online scene is already larger than 64's online scene. The one advantage that 64 once had over melee for expanding its scene is already lost. It's not hard for me to see why it's like this. People who go into the IRC chat mostly care about finding a match to play online and getting better. Anytime someone starts talking about some random non-smash topic, it gets ignored by people just posting their codes and regions looking for others. Not only that, but the people in their community were dedicated enough to create a modified version of their emulator that basically streamlined the online process. It's actually easier and FASTER for me to go into that IRC chat and find an opponent to start playing a melee match than to go online on kaillera and start a 64 match there.

Is there's something we could learn from their online scene? Maybe. Or we could just sit here arguing with rob/gav/wotg/whoever and pretend like our methods of playing online and finding matches are just fine and dandy.

Korra is getting intense! I definitely like the original avatar better. The second season of Korra was pretty good and this third one seems like its going to be mad good.

I absolutely agree with you and wasn't trying to say you're a terrible person. I was saying that if other people think you're ****ty, they should just ignore you and the problem would be solved (as is the case with most ****ty people). The twitter thing was funny in the beginning because you would say some ridiculous ****. I don't want to comment on anything else because I go on the skype chat once every few weeks and go offline right away. I don't know what happened in there.

You got it bad dude, but you'll be better by the end. As hard as it sounds, keep yourself from insulting people who are out to get you. They'll stop.

Also, tacos is here. SPREAD THE LUV

Second season was meh EXCEPT for "The Beginnings part 1 &2." You HAVE to watch the second season just because of those two episodes. Too good.

yes hipstur, i am a tiny person for saving gav quotes on twitter with all 11 followers to look at a few times a month. i should become big by domination and telling people to kill themselves.

i don't much care for anyone's opinion on what i do or what i say. like this:
cobr is pretty mean online
i don't give a damn. and i'm not saying that in a way like, OMG I DON'T CARE. i'm saying, i am wholly unaffected by the statement. i've chilled with clubba and i hope we drink and have fun at zenith. i couldn't give less of a damn if he says i'm mean online. oh well.

I'm not surprised that it eventually self-destructed.
it hasn't self destructed. i think we've talked about this many times, but i almost never have a problem getting a game on skype if i want one. worst comes to worst, shoot a pm to someone else in the group or on your contacts list. the difference with me is i don't play anyone who has 4 or more. so when someone like hip repeatedly whines for games, i won't play, cuz he's dumb far.

in any case,
melee's online scene is already larger than 64's online scene
of course. melee is expanding at a rapid rate, and as technology improves, more people will play online (better laptops, more stable emus, better internet connections, etc). there's just more interest in melee, and always will be.

of course online 64 could be better. stable servers and better emulation have been on wishlists for years, right? that's nothing new. i like to talk with smashers about things that aren't smash. was discussing french **** with Z earlier, talked other games dozens of times with so many different groups of people in the chat, etc.

maybe melee players are too busy clicking and clacking a bunch of different buttons to communicate with each other? dunno.

You can even change the number of frames of input lag on the fly. When the game starts to lag, you simply increase the number of frames until it doesn't lag anymore without having to constantly restart the session.
this is possible with aqz, but i don't see how this is good to developing as a player. if you're constantly switching between 1 and 5 frames, the **** are you supposed to do on console? seems counterproductive to me.

i'm not knocking melee online, by the way. i always support whatever they do. and we all know melee will always be bigger than 64, and it's unfair to compare some things.

i personally don't see a difference in how i speak to people, but that could be because there haven't been occasions where certain things have arisen. that is, arguments. and i argue the same way. but i'm probably biased in that judgment.

Liking this post just wasn't enough.

I would say start watching Korra from there. Season 1 didn't matter and nothing carries over except the shallow relationship details everyone's ignoring.
Season 2 was pretty over the top but at least interesting (someone nerf waterbending pls).
Season 3 lookin boss as ****.

That's good for you but you don't have an entire community full of people that dodge you and make excuses to not play you when you ask them.

In a few years they have a better online structure than what the 64 community could get in a decade.

That's nice but when you insert that into a chatroom that's meant to help people find matches, it doesn't help anyone who just wants to play.

maybe melee players are too busy clicking and clacking a bunch of different buttons to communicate with each other? dunno.
I guess I'm a "melee player" then because I actually want to play whatever smash game I just booted up the emulator for.

this is possible with aqz
AQZ takes an eternity to setup compared to melee p2p

but i don't see how this is good to developing as a player. if you're constantly switching between 1 and 5 frames, the **** are you supposed to do on console? seems counterproductive to me.
What the ****, it's never anything drastic like that.

i'm not knocking melee online, by the way. i always support whatever they do. and we all know melee will always be bigger than 64, and it's unfair to compare some things.
Okay then, let's just forget about comparisons and keep doing the same thing we've been doing, that's fine. I'm done with this game after zenith anyways. Can't be bothered to drive 4 hours to tournaments when I literally have no way to practice in between with good players for tournaments that happen like every 6 months. I'll just be over here playing melee online.

the point i was making is that it's not a common thing. it's something that happened with you for whatever reason.

In a few years they have a better online structure than what the 64 community could get in a decade.
because people are willing to put in the work and know what they're doing. because of their larger player base, they have a wider array of potential knowledge, and people who want to improve things. 64 is smaller and thus has limits. how many people developed melee's online capabilities? compare that to like, the four or five people who would actually be able to make something work for 64.

That's nice but when you insert that into a chatroom that's meant to help people find matches, it doesn't help anyone who just wants to play.
not for nothing, but i've never played a game where the chatroom where people want matches is just that.

I guess I'm a "melee player" then because I actually want to play whatever smash game I just booted up the emulator for.
you do talk when you play, albeit over skype (at least, you're not opposed to it). this was a joke, by the way, about how melee players put techskill on a pedestal and it intrudes on their abilities to socialize because they're too busy practicing jc shines or something.

AQZ takes an eternity to setup compared to melee p2p
i had it set up without hosting capabilities in 10 minutes. hosting capabilities took longer, but i figured out i can't go through my router, have to go directly through my modem. worst case scenario, half an hour. that's not bad at all.

What the ****, it's never anything drastic like that.
i'm going by aqz, where we couldn't play on 3, and had a bit of lag on 4, so we had to move to 5. when spikes happened we moved to 6 (granted, this was for mario party). but yeah, moving between 1-3 in a match is a problem just as much as moving between 1-5. even between 2 and 3. i feel like that'd greatly **** up training.

The ****? Season 2 was soooo bad. Every early episode ended on some ****ty cliffhanger that was downplayed in the next episode.
The plot overall was really out there and it deserved more than one book. "The beginnings" was the turning point and it made it alright for me. It pains me to say it, but 6/10 for book 2.

I don't like how the last two episodes of book 1 were paced, but it was a lot better than anything else Korra has come up with. I've seen 6 episodes of Korra book 3 (3-6 were leaked in Spanish). It's definitely better than book 2 so far, but we'll see.

Wow best post of the year award. Han solo should be making notes. This is what smash is all about. Be nice to each other, stay friends, play the game. Everyone who play this game is extremely cool. Its patethic that people harras each other and being childish bullys for no reason.

As many of you allready know I felt this personal from sangoku who has blocked all of europe for no reason. Whats weird is that he is so nice here on the boards. Guess he gets 2014 Dr. jekyll and Hyde awards.

Seriously guys stay friends.
