That's the rumor, but I honestly doubt it. Dragon Quest is a MASSIVELY popular series in Japan, there were probably a ton of requests for different characters, akin to how Sakurai said a ton of people were requesting Final Fantasy characters with Cloud reigning as the most requested. It was probably more spread-out for Dragon Quest protagonists with the three we got as alts likely being the most requested.I could easily see a company suggest characters to Nintendo though. Pretty much everyone company has said they would love x character in smash. So I’m sure if Capcom wanted to reach out and request something they could have.
According to the rumors dragon quest was added as a request to promote the series in the west.
I could see the Luminary being the default as a way of marketing not only Dragon Quest to the west but also to market Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest XI S.
They kinda did though, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 was not a story heavy game, Project x Zone 2 was..and it tried to act like everything was in-canon with the original series each character is from, even though its not canon itself. Phoenix Wright & Maya can not fight on their own, so it makes sense they'd have to give them a way of fighting as was done in PxZ2's story early on.This is pretty fair, But let’s be honest, they didn’t need to make a reason as for why Phoenix can fight. Marvel Vs Capcom was a thing and afaik Phoenix didn’t have any excuse as to why he could fight. So they really didn’t need to give him one.
Also they used spirit channeling as an excuse to murder people before. Hell thats literally the plot of reunion and turnabout. It’s established lore that yes if you summon the right person spirit channeling can absolutely kill. Yeah you need a name and all that, and it would be a little weird but they seemed to really underplay things. If Phoenix can fight no problem in a fighting game, they didn’t need to power creep him here.
I get everything else for the story, but they honestly could have gotten away with not needing a reason to make him unless till a certain point.
As for who is important to the story, I have to imagine they let each company choose their defining characters, I would be surprised otherwise.
But I do still think that spotlight was pretty important. Won’t be long till we find out
And it wouldn't really be 'Maya' if they had her using Spirit Channeling to attack and, honestly, that'd be a creepy way of doing things while she'd still be limited by her human body..she doesn't gain supernatural powers or superhuman strength.
Like I said previously in this reply, his fighting game appearance was not a story heavy thing and clearly done just for fun while his appearance in Project x Zone 2 was meant to be more 'serious' for lack of a better term..fans wouldn't have accepted him just having powers for no reason while acting like Phoenix was his normal self otherwise.
Not really, most of the time companies just license their characters out and make sure they are being portrayed correctly, they rarely have a say in whatever story is being told in the crossover game..if they did, it would run the risk of each company attempting to make their character(s) 'most important'.
I don't think there's anything to it..as is said 'Not Everything is a Smash Hint'.
Yup, I remember that...god I want to play Banjo-Kazooie (and Tooie) again..I really REALLY hope that Microsoft and Nintendo port the Xbox Live Arcade HD versions to the Nintendo Switch. There's a Polar Bear named Boggy in the first game, so a color based off of him would make sense. And like you said, the multiplayer colors would work well as color swaps.
Anyway, I completely agree that a Polar Bear/Boggy colour makes too much sense...for three particular reasons.
1) Boggy the Polar Bear in Banjo-Kazooie
2) Polar Bears
3) It would go great with DK's Yeti skin.
