Assuming Sakurai wants to surprise us with someone bigger or unexpected? What characters do you guys think could possibility top Banjo or at least come close?

If we're going third party, I could see Doom Slayer and Ryu Hayabusa as sort of my choices.

But because Nintendo chose the DLC fighters, I think we won't get the bigger hits after the first three like Joker, Banjo-Kazooie or even the Hero. The last two could be promoted characters for all we know for now.

Who else is gonna by Ghostbusters The Video Game Remastered on Switch? Now THAT’S a great licensed game. Definitely excited to be able to take it on the go with me. Might be interesting to compare it with LM3.

Idk, a part of me feels like K. Rool hype was above Banjo levels, and Ridley hype was beyond that, but nothing will top Sonic hype levels.

But if we're talking about hype levels for DLC, Waluigi will top Banjo's level of hype without a doubt. Isaac wouldn't, and Geno wouldn't even come close.

Yeah, Ridley was stuck in the "Sakurai actually said never" category, like Villy and Miis.

Someone mentioned that Captain Falcon comic that came with F-Zero, so here's an excerpt from it.

I'm glad Falcon is the way he is in smash, but I find it odd that Sakurai didn't include a lazer-gun special for Captain Falcon in the original Smash Bros. since it was the only combat ability he ever displayed outside of his car. He could have just copy/paste Fox's Laser and give it to Falcon too.

Only one I can think of is Geno honestly. I could see Waluigi too him being upgraded from being an assist especially after the outcry over it.

Few others I can think of to is Sora given his popularity and Kingdom Hearts fanbase. Crash Bandicoot as well given his legacy as an iconic gaming mascot back then.

Other then that really can't think of anyone else.

While I consider Banjo & Kazooie to be Nintendo icons, Crash is a gaming icon overall, so would certainly top Banjo. There's not as much of a "WTF" appeal as a Microsoft-owned character getting in, but is probably known more worldwide. Sora could also top it, and would be another "WTF" for most people because of Disney, even though, like Microsoft, they'd be more welcoming working with Smash than people think (especially given a representative has already welcomed the idea). Only question mark is we already got a Square Enix character, though this would technically be Disney. Geno is another grey area, given the Square connection, but more heavily associated with the Mario series. He'd be the character I think would disappoint more casual fans who don't know him, but would be hype for Smash players who've wanted him for so long. Master Chief would top Banjo, being another gaming icon/mascot, but that would all depend on whether Microsoft got two characters. Not impossible, just unlikely.

I think Waluigi is incredibly unlikely--possible, given the DLC decisions was completed after the Waluigi craze, but it was a loud minority, and would disappoint more people than it would satisfy. Doesn't fit in with the type of characters we've been getting in this pass, and unlike a Three Houses character, wouldn't add anything new, since the character himself, stages and music are already well-represented. He's more of a base game type of character.

All that having been said, it's certainly possible they don't try to "top" Dragon Quest and Banjo-Kazooie. Like the base game, and even moreso given the fighter pass model, they would likely want to get their most marketable characters out first to sell people on the fighter's pass, rather than "save the best for last". I feel like the last character will be a less marketable, but highly requested character from Smash fans.

Ridley was more popular than K. Rool until the 3DS version of Smash 4 was released and Sakurai made those "he wouldn't be Ridley if we shrank him" comments. After that, K. Rool started picking up steam.

But yes, Ridley was basically Sakurai doing the impossible. K. Rool was great too, but it wasn't nearly as shocking.

Same with . She's had those daggers on her side for multiple games, on she only really gets to use it in her epic FS. I wouldn't mind if her aerials and smash attacks used them, kind of like Greninja.

I really had wished Pixar just kept it as a trilogy. 3's ending just felt like a perfect closure IMO.

But hey if you guys look forward to 4 that's your opinion as they would say. To each their own and I hope whoever looks forward to it that you guys like it.

I feel like Smash 4 Dr. Mario doesn't get enough credit, since he was the first vet to have ever gotten cut to return in a later installment, which broke a fan rule, as well as opening the floodgates.

I dunno, personal biases aside I don't think anything from here on out will top Cloud unless we get Master Chief or something. For so long he was the character you joked about being in Smash and then out of nowhere it stopped being a joke and became reality.

Not to say Toy Story 4 will or might be a bad movie which it probably won't be (Again to me it ended with 3 and tend to keep it that way to myself) but I always don't rely on Rotten Tomatoes given Captain Marvel (IMO the worst MCU film to date).

For me personally? Or for everyone? Kind of hard for me to say for the latter, particularly since I skipped the Gamecube generation.

Melee: While I didn't own a Gamecube, I was surprised you could play as and .
Brawl: (my friend, a Sony fanboy, was more hyped for )
Smash 4: (especially both together--made me think there'd be no way to top them, so how could you make another game)
Ultimate: :banjo:

I didn't know anybody in the Smash 4 DLC cycle, so skipped the DLC at the time. For Ultimate, while I was happy fans got Ridley and King K Rool, I only knew about them because of Smash speculation. As I've said, there's an alternate universe out there where I had an ExpansionPak as a kid to play Donkey Kong 64 and was more hyped about King K Rool than Banjo. Glad this universe has all of them now.
